Book excerpt: Tidal Trap finds hero Jefferson Parker quickly embroiled in an international chase of global proportions. When invited to visit his friend at a Naval base in Maine, Parker is recruited to undertake a covert mission. At first he refuses, but after an attack on the station and the disappearance of his friend, Parker accepts his role. Parker and his schooner crew are drawn ever deeper into intrigue and betrayal. At stake, the security of America's submarine force and the lives of countless people. Behind the obvious conflict arises a secret past for both Parker and Taylor Stephenson, a beautiful but seemingly innocent bystander. Not to be so easily pushed aside, there's Carla Gianni too, who is a crewmember on Parker's schooner. She too is very much in love with Parker and isn't about to her man just slip away. Join Parker as he struggles to find solutions to a rogue submarine and environmental issues about dolphins used as weapons. Parker must come to terms with a mission betrayed, a crew to lead and protect, and a choice between two women he professes to love. Tidal Trap will take you on a journey into attack submarines, across storm-swept oceans in a fast sailing ship, and behind doors with political trade-offs.

This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive attempt to solve what Hartry Field has called "the central problem in the metaphysics of causation": the problem of reconciling the need for causal notions in the special sciences with the limited role of causation in physics. If the world evolves fundamentally according to laws of physics, what place can be found for the causal regularities and principles identified by the special sciences? Douglas Kutach answers this question by invoking a novel distinction between fundamental and derivative reality and a complementary conception of reduction. He then constructs a framework that allows all causal regularities from the sciences to be rendered in terms of fundamental relations. By drawing on a methodology that focuses on explaining the results of specially crafted experiments, Kutach avoids the endless task of catering to pre-theoretical judgments about causal scenarios. This volume is a detailed case study that uses fundamental physics to elucidate causation, but technicalities are eschewed so that a wide range of philosophers can profit. The book is packed with innovations: new models of events, probability, counterfactual dependence, influence, and determinism. These lead to surprising implications for topics like Newcomb's paradox, action at a distance, Simpson's paradox, and more. Kutach explores the special connection between causation and time, ultimately providing a never-before-presented explanation for the direction of causation. Along the way, readers will discover that events cause themselves, that low barometer readings do cause thunderstorms after all, and that we humans routinely affect the past more than we affect the future.

Book excerpt: YOU CHOOSE is an (anti)-choose-your-own-adventure. You choose: You hear a scream (or not), and what do you do about it. Nothing or stay in your chair and figure out the who what when why or go out the front door and chase the scream to prevent it or create it or capture it. Within the book are choices and non-choices, choices masquerading as choices, labyrinths, your torture and your self-torture, your authorship, multiple worlds, you becoming someone else, another you, you becoming a series of animals, you becoming us, you becoming death, your repeated death, pizza, your mother, inner ear workings, and other tailings or tails or tales. YOU CHOOSE is literary, speculative, uncertain, an attempt at the universal and many worlds, surreal, magically realistic, immersive, and labyrinthine.
