Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with some aspects of linear techniques in combinatorial group theory having their origin in the work of Wilhelm Magnus in the 1930s. The central theme is the identification and properties of those subgroups of free groups which are induced by certain ideals of the integral group rings of free groups. This subject has been developed extensively, and the author seeks to present, in contemporary style, a systematic and comprehensive account of some of its developments. Included in the book are a solution of the Fox subgroup problem and an up-to-date development of the dimension subgroup problem. Aimed at graduate students and researchers in combinatorial group theory, the book requires a familiarity with the general terminology of free groups and group rings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combinatorial Aspects of Lie Superalgebras emphasizes the algorithmic and computational aspects of the combinatorial techniques of Lie superalgebras. It is written primarily for mathematicians and scientists who do not have a background in the field of infinite dimensional Lie superalgebras, but who realize the potential uses of the results. Consequently, the discussions provided on the applications of Lie superalgebras theory are clear and comprehensive and, throughout the text, primary attention is given to algorithms and examples. The examples illustrate theoretical results, and the algorithms, which can be used for symbolic calculations with Lie superalgebras, are based on basic and generally applicable rules and theorems. Combinatorial Aspects of Lie Superalgebras contains comprehensive literature citations and provides an excellent reference on the techniques and results of combinatorial theory of Lie superalgebras. Programs that have been developed by the authors for computation are included on a diskette at the back of the book, and complete directions for use are provided.

Book excerpt: On September 1-7, 1996 a conference on Groups and Geometries took place in lovely Siena, Italy. It brought together experts and interested mathematicians from numerous countries. The scientific program centered around invited exposi tory lectures; there also were shorter research announcements, including talks by younger researchers. The conference concerned a broad range of topics in group theory and geometry, with emphasis on recent results and open problems. Special attention was drawn to the interplay between group-theoretic methods and geometric and combinatorial ones. Expanded versions of many of the talks appear in these Proceedings. This volume is intended to provide a stimulating collection of themes for a broad range of algebraists and geometers. Among those themes, represented within the conference or these Proceedings, are aspects of the following: 1. the classification of finite simple groups, 2. the structure and properties of groups of Lie type over finite and algebraically closed fields of finite characteristic, 3. buildings, and the geometry of projective and polar spaces, and 4. geometries of sporadic simple groups. We are grateful to the authors for their efforts in providing us with manuscripts in LaTeX. Barbara Priwitzer and Thomas Hintermann, Mathematics Editors of Birkhauser, have been very helpful and supportive throughout the preparation of this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is designed as a text for the first year of graduate algebra, but it can also serve as a reference since it contains more advanced topics as well. This second edition has a different organization than the first. It begins with a discussion of the cubic and quartic equations, which leads into permutations, group theory, and Galois theory (for finite extensions; infinite Galois theory is discussed later in the book). The study of groups continues with finite abelian groups (finitely generated groups are discussed later, in the context of module theory), Sylow theorems, simplicity of projective unimodular groups, free groups and presentations, and the Nielsen-Schreier theorem (subgroups of free groups are free). The study of commutative rings continues with prime and maximal ideals, unique factorization, noetherian rings, Zorn's lemma and applications, varieties, and Gr'obner bases. Next, noncommutative rings and modules are discussed, treating tensor product, projective, injective, and flat modules, categories, functors, and natural transformations, categorical constructions (including direct and inverse limits), and adjoint functors. Then follow group representations: Wedderburn-Artin theorems, character theory, theorems of Burnside and Frobenius, division rings, Brauer groups, and abelian categories. Advanced linear algebra treats canonical forms for matrices and the structure of modules over PIDs, followed by multilinear algebra. Homology is introduced, first for simplicial complexes, then as derived functors, with applications to Ext, Tor, and cohomology of groups, crossed products, and an introduction to algebraic K-theory. Finally, the author treats localization, Dedekind rings and algebraic number theory, and homological dimensions. The book ends with the proof that regular local rings have unique factorization."--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The questions that have been at the center of invariant theory since the 19th century have revolved around the following themes: finiteness, computation, and special classes of invariants. This book begins with a survey of many concrete examples chosen from these themes in the algebraic, homological, and combinatorial context. In further chapters, the authors pick one or the other of these questions as a departure point and present the known answers, open problems, and methods and tools needed to obtain these answers. Chapter 2 deals with algebraic finiteness. Chapter 3 deals with combinatorial finiteness. Chapter 4 presents Noetherian finiteness. Chapter 5 addresses homological finiteness. Chapter 6 presents special classes of invariants, which deal with modular invariant theory and its particular problems and features. Chapter 7 collects results for special classes of invariants and coinvariants such as (pseudo) reflection groups and representations of low degree. If the ground field is finite, additional problems appear and are compensated for in part by the emergence of new tools. One of these is the Steenrod algebra, which the authors introduce in Chapter 8 to solve the inverse invariant theory problem, around which the authors have organized the last three chapters. The book contains numerous examples to illustrate the theory, often of more than passing interest, and an appendix on commutative graded algebra, which provides some of the required basic background. There is an extensive reference list to provide the reader with orientation to the vast literature.

Book excerpt: The papers in these proceedings of the 1986 Arcata Summer Institute bear witness to the extraordinarily vital and intense research in the representation theory of finite groups. The confluence of diverse mathematical disciplines has brought forth work of great scope and depth. Particularly striking is the influence of algebraic geometry and cohomology theory in the modular representation theory and the character theory of reductive groups over finite fields, and in the general modular representation theory of finite groups. The continuing developments in block theory and the general character theory of finite groups is noteworthy. The expository and research aspects of the Summer Institute are well represented by these papers.

Book excerpt: Number Theory, Trace Formulas and Discrete Groups: Symposium in Honor of Atle Selberg Oslo, Norway, July 14-21, 1987 is a collection of papers presented at the 1987 Selberg Symposium, held at the University of Oslo. This symposium contains 30 lectures that cover the significant contribution of Atle Selberg in the field of mathematics. This book is organized into three parts encompassing 29 chapters. The first part presents a brief introduction to the history and developments of the zeta-function. The second part contains lectures on Selberg's considerable research studies on understanding the principles of several aspects of mathematics, including in modular forms, the Riemann zeta function, analytic number theory, sieve methods, discrete groups, and trace formula. The third part is devoted to Selberg's further research works on these topics, with particular emphasis on their practical applications. Some of these research studies, including the integral representations of Einstein series and L-functions; first eigenvalue for congruence groups; the zeta function of a Kleinian group; and the Waring's problem are discussed. This book will prove useful to mathematicians, researchers, and students.

Book excerpt: Classification of Finite Simple Groups (CFSG) is a major project involving work by hundreds of researchers. The work was largely completed by about 1983, although final publication of the “quasithin” part was delayed until 2004. Since the 1980s, CFSG has had a huge influence on work in finite group theory and in many adjacent fields of mathematics. This book attempts to survey and sample a number of such topics from the very large and increasingly active research area of applications of CFSG. The book is based on the author's lectures at the September 2015 Venice Summer School on Finite Groups. With about 50 exercises from original lectures, it can serve as a second-year graduate course for students who have had first-year graduate algebra. It may be of particular interest to students looking for a dissertation topic around group theory. It can also be useful as an introduction and basic reference; in addition, it indicates fuller citations to the appropriate literature for readers who wish to go on to more detailed sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This graduate textbook presents the basics of representation theory for finite groups from the point of view of semisimple algebras and modules over them. The presentation interweaves insights from specific examples with development of general and powerful tools based on the notion of semisimplicity. The elegant ideas of commutant duality are introduced, along with an introduction to representations of unitary groups. The text progresses systematically and the presentation is friendly and inviting. Central concepts are revisited and explored from multiple viewpoints. Exercises at the end of the chapter help reinforce the material. Representing Finite Groups: A Semisimple Introduction would serve as a textbook for graduate and some advanced undergraduate courses in mathematics. Prerequisites include acquaintance with elementary group theory and some familiarity with rings and modules. A final chapter presents a self-contained account of notions and results in algebra that are used. Researchers in mathematics and mathematical physics will also find this book useful. A separate solutions manual is available for instructors.
