Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metric fixed point theory encompasses the branch of fixed point theory which metric conditions on the underlying space and/or on the mappings play a fundamental role. In some sense the theory is a far-reaching outgrowth of Banach's contraction mapping principle. A natural extension of the study of contractions is the limiting case when the Lipschitz constant is allowed to equal one. Such mappings are called nonexpansive. Nonexpansive mappings arise in a variety of natural ways, for example in the study of holomorphic mappings and hyperconvex metric spaces. Because most of the spaces studied in analysis share many algebraic and topological properties as well as metric properties, there is no clear line separating metric fixed point theory from the topological or set-theoretic branch of the theory. Also, because of its metric underpinnings, metric fixed point theory has provided the motivation for the study of many geometric properties of Banach spaces. The contents of this Handbook reflect all of these facts. The purpose of the Handbook is to provide a primary resource for anyone interested in fixed point theory with a metric flavor. The goal is to provide information for those wishing to find results that might apply to their own work and for those wishing to obtain a deeper understanding of the theory. The book should be of interest to a wide range of researchers in mathematical analysis as well as to those whose primary interest is the study of fixed point theory and the underlying spaces. The level of exposition is directed to a wide audience, including students and established researchers.

Book excerpt: Techniques and principles of minimax theory play a key role in many areas of research, including game theory, optimization, and computational complexity. In general, a minimax problem can be formulated as min max f(x, y) (1) ",EX !lEY where f(x, y) is a function defined on the product of X and Y spaces. There are two basic issues regarding minimax problems: The first issue concerns the establishment of sufficient and necessary conditions for equality minmaxf(x,y) = maxminf(x,y). (2) "'EX !lEY !lEY "'EX The classical minimax theorem of von Neumann is a result of this type. Duality theory in linear and convex quadratic programming interprets minimax theory in a different way. The second issue concerns the establishment of sufficient and necessary conditions for values of the variables x and y that achieve the global minimax function value f(x*, y*) = minmaxf(x, y). (3) "'EX !lEY There are two developments in minimax theory that we would like to mention.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the refereed proceedings of the special session on Optimization and Nonlinear Analysis held at the Joint American Mathematical Society-Israel Mathematical Union Meeting which took place at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in May 1995. Most of the papers in this book originated from the lectures delivered at this special session. In addition, some participants who didn't present lectures and invited speakers who were unable to attend contributed their work. The fields of optimization theory and nonlinear analysis continue to be very active. This book presents not only the wide spectrum and diversity of the results, but also their manifold connections to other areas, such as differential equations, functional analysis, operator theory, calculus of variations, numerical analysis, and mathematical programming. In reading this book one encounters papers that deal, for example, with convex, quasiconvex and generalized convex functions, fixed and periodic points, fractional-linear transformations, moduli of convexity, monontone operators, Morse lemmas, Navier-Stokes equations, nonexpansive maps, nonsmooth analysis, numerical stability, products of projections, steepest descent, the Leray-Schauder degree, the turnpike property, and variational inequalities.

In many of these problems it is necessary to compute the global optimum (or a good approximation) of a multivariable function. The variables that define the function to be optimized can be continuous and/or discrete and, in addition, many times satisfy certain constraints. Global optimization problems belong to the complexity class of NP-hard prob lems. Such problems are very difficult to solve. Traditional descent optimization algorithms based on local information are not adequate for solving these problems. In most cases of practical interest the number of local optima increases, on the aver age, exponentially with the size of the problem (number of variables). Furthermore, most of the traditional approaches fail to escape from a local optimum in order to continue the search for the global solution. Global optimization has received a lot of attention in the past ten years, due to the success of new algorithms for solving large classes of problems from diverse areas such as engineering design and control, computational chemistry and biology, structural optimization, computer science, operations research, and economics. This book contains refereed invited papers presented at the conference on "State of the Art in Global Optimization: Computational Methods and Applications" held at Princeton University, April 28-30, 1995. The conference presented current re search on global optimization and related applications in science and engineering. The papers included in this book cover a wide spectrum of approaches for solving global optimization problems and applications.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the interpretation of ergodic optimal problems as questions of variational dynamics, employing a comparable approach to that of the Aubry-Mather theory for Lagrangian systems. Ergodic optimization is primarily concerned with the study of optimizing probability measures. This work presents and discusses the fundamental concepts of the theory, including the use and relevance of Sub-actions as analogues to subsolutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Further, it provides evidence for the impressively broad applicability of the tools inspired by the weak KAM theory.

Book excerpt: The real world is complicated, as a result of which most mathematical models arising from mechanics, physics, chemistry and biology are nonlinear. Based on the efforts of scientists in the 20th century, especially in the last three decades, topological, variational, geometrical and other methods have developed rapidly in nonlinear analysis, which made direct studies of nonlinear models possible in many cases, and provided global information on nonlinear problems which was not available by the traditional linearization method. This volume reflects that rapid development in many areas of nonlinear analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents five surveys with extensive bibliographies and six original contributions on set optimization and its applications in mathematical finance and game theory. The topics range from more conventional approaches that look for minimal/maximal elements with respect to vector orders or set relations, to the new complete-lattice approach that comprises a coherent solution concept for set optimization problems, along with existence results, duality theorems, optimality conditions, variational inequalities and theoretical foundations for algorithms. Modern approaches to scalarization methods can be found as well as a fundamental contribution to conditional analysis. The theory is tailor-made for financial applications, in particular risk evaluation and [super-]hedging for market models with transaction costs, but it also provides a refreshing new perspective on vector optimization. There is no comparable volume on the market, making the book an invaluable resource for researchers working in vector optimization and multi-criteria decision-making, mathematical finance and economics as well as [set-valued] variational analysis.

Book excerpt: Fixed Point Theory and Graph Theory provides an intersection between the theories of fixed point theorems that give the conditions under which maps (single or multivalued) have solutions and graph theory which uses mathematical structures to illustrate the relationship between ordered pairs of objects in terms of their vertices and directed edges. This edited reference work is perhaps the first to provide a link between the two theories, describing not only their foundational aspects, but also the most recent advances and the fascinating intersection of the domains. The authors provide solution methods for fixed points in different settings, with two chapters devoted to the solutions method for critically important non-linear problems in engineering, namely, variational inequalities, fixed point, split feasibility, and hierarchical variational inequality problems. The last two chapters are devoted to integrating fixed point theory in spaces with the graph and the use of retractions in the fixed point theory for ordered sets. - Introduces both metric fixed point and graph theory in terms of their disparate foundations and common application environments - Provides a unique integration of otherwise disparate domains that aids both students seeking to understand either area and researchers interested in establishing an integrated research approach - Emphasizes solution methods for fixed points in non-linear problems such as variational inequalities, split feasibility, and hierarchical variational inequality problems that is particularly appropriate for engineering and core science applications

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fixed point theory arose from the Banach contraction principle and has been studied for a long time. Its application mostly relies on the existence of solutions to mathematical problems that are formulated from economics and engineering. After the existence of the solutions is guaranteed, the numerical methodology will be established to obtain the approximated solution. Fixed points of function depend heavily on the considered spaces that are defined using the intuitive axioms. In particular, variant metrics spaces are proposed, like a partial metric space, b-metric space, fuzzy metric space and probabilistic metric space, etc. Different spaces will result in different types of fixed point theorems. In other words, there are a lot of different types of fixed point theorems in the literature. Therefore, this Special Issue welcomes survey articles. Articles that unify the different types of fixed point theorems are also very welcome. The topics of this Special Issue include the following: Fixed point theorems in metric space Fixed point theorems in fuzzy metric space Fixed point theorems in probabilistic metric space Fixed point theorems of set-valued functions in various spaces The existence of solutions in game theory The existence of solutions for equilibrium problems The existence of solutions of differential equations The existence of solutions of integral equations Numerical methods for obtaining the approximated fixed points
