Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five Daughters-in-Law and Three Sons By: Thomas E. Berry, Ph, D. Lillie Dietz was an heiress. Not of money, but of land. Her family owned many large farms in the community, plus the local store and grainery. Lillie was bored, and trying to cope with a hearing problem that she feared would be passed on to her children if she married. She was looking at a life of loneliness. When the great tornado of 1925 destroyed most of her little farm town of DeSoto, Illinois, Lillie was beside herself with grief and anxiety. Her father sent her to visit her Aunt's ranch in Colorado, where she matured into a young woman with a larger view of the world. When she returned home she met a young man at a card party. Eddie was handsome and different than the local suitors. She fell in love and they married. They lived a loving and happy life, their progeny did not. The marriage produced three sons, and Lillie could not have been happier. She had her childhood with her sons. She gave them a wonderful childhood. The sons produced five daughters-in-law. All but one brought a multitude of problems to their marriages. This is the story of Lillie's life and how she and her sons coped with their disastrous marriages.

Discrediting the myth of the Southern belle, the book brings to light the lives of Cherokee women, Appalachian "coal daughters", and Jewish women in the South. The essays--all but one published here for the first time--fill crucial gaps in southern history and women's history.

But what about Hagar, Michal, and Priscilla, all women who had a direct influence in the story of God's people? The Bible is full of fascinating, powerful, and faithful women, as well as lessons that have unique meaning for women today." "In The Women's Study Bible, respected Bible scholars draw out these often overlooked stories and reveal the lives of women at the time and share lessons for women of today. Separate sidebars cover topics such as midwifery, women disciples, and female images of God. The Women's Study Bible doesn't shy away from the difficult issues, but helps readers to understand them better in both their original context and the modern world." "The New Living Translation of the Bible uses inclusive language for humanity and where it is clear that both male and female are meant to be included." --Book Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Image of God: A Feminist Commentary on the Torah is a unique blend of traditional Judaism and radical feminism and is a groundbreaking commentary on the Bible, the central document of Jewish life. Using classical Jewish sources as well as supplementary material from history, anthropology, sociology, psychology, ancient religion, and feminist theory, Judith Antonelli has examined in detail every woman and every issue pertaining to women in the Torah, parshah by parshah. The Torah is divided into fifty-four portions; each portion, or parshah, is read in the synagogue on the Sabbath (combining a few to make a yearly cycle of readings). This book is modeled on that structure; hence there are fifty chapters, each of which corresponds to a parshah. One may, therefore, read this book from beginning to end or use it as a study guide for the parshah of the week. The reader will discover in these pages that the Torah is not the root of misogyny, sexism, or male supremacy. Rather, by looking at the Torah in the context in which it was given, the pagan world of the ancient Near East, it becomes clear that far from oppressing women, the Torah actually improved the status of women as it existed in the surrounding societies. Not only does this book refute the common feminist stereotype that Judaism is a "patriarchal religion" but it also refutes the sexism found in Judaism by exposing it as sociological rather than "divine law."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the mid-nineteenth-century, 'public opinion' emerged as a new form of authority in Upper Canada. Contemporaries came to believe that the best answer to common questions arose from deliberation among private individuals. Older conceptions of government, sociability and the relationship between knowledge and power were jettisoned for a new image of Upper Canada as a deliberative democracy. The Capacity to Judge asks what made widespread public debate about common issues possible; why it came to be seen as desirable, even essential; and how it was integrated into Upper Canada's constitutional and social self-image. Drawing on an international body of literature indebted to Jürgen Habermas and based on extensive research in period newspapers, Jeffrey L. McNairn argues that voluntary associations and the press created a reading public capable of reasoning on matters of state, and that the dynamics of political conflict invested that public with final authority. He traces how contemporaries grappled with the consequences as they scrutinized parliamentary, republican and radical options for institutionalizing public opinion. The Capacity to Judge concludes with a case study of deliberative democracy in action that serves as a sustained defense of the type of intellectual history the book as a whole exemplifies.
