Book excerpt: This book presents a collection of papers which discuss the origins of the domestic ideal and its effects on activities usually undertaken by women: not only on women’s wage work, but also on activities either not defined as work or accorded an ambiguous status. It discusses the formation of the ideology of domesticity, philanthropy and its effects on official policy and on women, landladies in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, working-class radical suffragists, and Labour Party and trade union attitudes to feminists. Modern society of 1979, when the book was first published, is analysed in a discussion of militancy and acquiescence among women wage workers, a look at how and why the legal system reinforces activity specialisation according to gender, and an examination of why both pre-pre-war capitalism and the modern Welfare State have been unable to meet the needs of dependents. This collection reflects the increasing recognition that in order to understand women’s roles today, it is necessary to examine not only their current manifestations, but also their origins and early development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Population of the United Kingdom has now reached 67 million. 40% (approximately 27 million) are not classed as ’physically active’. This is a shocking statistic and it is getting worse. The decline in physical activity starts at around 24 years and it is all downhill from there! The ’unique’ fifteen minute plan means that anyone from 18 - 80 can quickly reach their optimum fitness level in just 15 minutes a day. They can then maintain their level by exercising just 3 times a week. The plan is based on The Royal Canadian Air Force BX Plan and has been the core source of fitness in the Canadian Airforce for over 50years. No special equipment is needed: all of the exercises are ’free form’ and can be done at home, in the office or out and about if you travel in your work. There is no need to join a gym so there are no fees to pay. No group memberships although the plans are really good for families and groups of friends. The system is graded so to start with the exercises are quite simple and gentle. You move on to the second set of exercises at your own pace. All of the exercises are illustrated and there are charts to help you plot your progress. Easy steps to get you fit and keep you fit in less time than it probably takes to drive to the gym. Fully illustrated, and with integral progress charts, fitness can be fun. With a minimum amount of space and no costs the Need2Know Plan is ideal for anyone from 18 - 80.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores common representations and experiences of American fitness. It takes women's experiences as the center of inquiry toward an understanding of the function of fitness in our lives and in our culture-at-large. Ranging from 1968 to the present, from Jane Fonda to WiiFit, from revolution to institutionalization, from personal to political, and beyond, this book considers a broad range of topics from an interdisciplinary perspective: generations, cultural appropriation, community development, choreography, methodology, healing, and social justice. Drawing on her experience as a cultural theorist, educator and fitness instructor, the author offers critical and creative approaches that reveal the limitations and possibilities of fitness. The book enables readers to think about their own relationship to fitness as well as the more abstract meanings of the term, and suggests the idea that fitness has some potential to transform our worlds--if we're willing to do the work(out).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The New Rules of Lifting for Women, authors Lou Schuler, Cassandra Forsythe and Alwyn Cosgrove present a comprehensive strength, conditioning and nutrition plan destined to revolutionize the way women work out. All the latest studies prove that strength training, not aerobics, provides the key to losing fat and building a fit, strong body. This book refutes the misconception that women will "bulk up" if they lift heavy weights. Nonsense! It's tough enough for men to pack on muscle, and they have much more of the hormone necessary to build muscle: natural testosterone. Muscles need to be strengthened to achieve a lean, healthy look. Properly conditioned muscles increase metabolism and promote weight loss -- it's that simple. The program demands that women put down the "Barbie" weights, step away from the treadmill and begin a strength and conditioning regime for the natural athlete in every woman. The New Rules of Lifting for Women will change the way women see fitness, nutrition and their own bodies.
