Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Top rope soloing has been a climbing technique employed by climbers without partners for fifty years, allowing a climber to top rope climbs with a certain degree of safety lacking in free soloing. For various reasons, these techniques were never formally codified or documented for others to learn from or build upon; instead, they were passed on through word of mouth. One possible reason for this lack of formalization was the inherent risk associated with these techniques, making people hesitant to take responsibility for potential accidents. However, the advent of the internet changed this dynamic. Suddenly, the subject began to receive significantly more attention, both on climbing forums and websites, as well as on video platforms like YouTube. While this helped disseminate more information, it also created a problem: what was once a lack of information turned into an overwhelming abundance of it. Everyone was sharing their thoughts at once, leading to a mix of both bad and good advice. Simultaneously, there was a surge in interest in top rope soloing, accompanied by a corresponding increase in accidents. Something needed to be done to address this issue. "On the Line" was a three-year project aimed at consolidating all available information on the subject, both old and new, and integrating it with industrial rope access techniques. The goal was to finally produce a foundational text on the subject. It's important to note that "On the Line" is not meant to be the definitive authority on the subject but rather the first step in the right direction. Subjects covered include: Safety Device mechanics. Device selection. Device attachment Back-ups Rope systems (one rope, two ropes, pseudo leading, top rope TRS). Rigging. Escape. Re-anchors and redirects. Lots and lots of micro details on hardware and software.

Book excerpt: When by-the-book meets off-the-record, the story’s just starting . . . Special Agent Ty Grady is pretty sure he’s about to get fired. His last perp skipped town before he could make an arrest, leaving him with a lot of means and precious few ends. When he’s called into the boss’s office, he expects the worst. And he isn’t exactly wrong. Chained to a desk in cybercrimes, Special Agent Zane Garrett dots his i’s and crosses his t’s. He doesn’t have much of a choice in the matter—his record can’t handle another black mark. When he learns he’s getting reassigned, he doesn’t miss the ironic pronunciation on “promotion.” Wherever he’s going, it’s nowhere good. When they’re partnered to solve a series of murders, their chances of success look low. They’re fantastic agents, but the case seems more like a punishment than an assignment. They can’t stop driving each other crazy. . . and not just in a bad way. This killer already took out the previous agents assigned to the case, and it’s not long before he’s on Ty and Zane’s trail, as well. They’ll have to set their frustrations aside, before it’s too late. *This is a limited re-release of the original series, without changes. Some aspects of the story are now dated, and an updated version will be published at a later date.* **See this title's page on RiptidePublishing.com for content warnings.**

Book excerpt: RA:The Book - The Recording Architecture Book of Studio Design was first published as a single, hardcover volume in 2011 and which has sold in over fifty countries to critical acclaim. A necessarily large format dictated by the detailed drawings it contained, RA:The Book was unavoidably heavy and costly to produce and ship. This iBook version is the first of three stand alone volumes which will hopefully make this essential guide to recording studio design more accessible. It includes a new introduction with previously unavailable photographs. The following description is for the original hardcover: Established by Roger D'Arcy and Hugh Flynn on April 1st 1987 Recording Architecture has risen to become one of the premier recording studio design companies in the world. First Commissioned by ex Def Leppard guitarist Pete Willis for Blue Room studios In Sheffield swiftly followed by projects such as Hulgrave Hall, for composer Keith Hopwood the company has grown to design key installations around the world. Now for the first time they will be publishing a history of these ground breaking designs covering all aspects of architectural, acoustic and interior design of these studios and spaces specifically related to sound on a project by project basis. In a Career spanning Three decades Recording Architecture has virtually unrivalled experience in the design of studios which range in size and purpose from classical orchestral, residential, mixing, mastering, post production, film dubbing, video editing and rehearsal studios over 40 countries worldwide. Stating his desire to expand awareness with the new book Roger D Arcy states Over the years, and perhaps surprisingly, the only available books on recording studio design seem to have been written by individuals with little or no qualified background in Architecture or design in the field - we are trying show the detailed architectural/acoustic input behind a successful design with each studio study showing drawings in large format . This is not a theoretical guide but a detailed presentation of tried and tested techniques as applied to real, built projects in many of the case studies, the actual drawings issued for construction are reproduced. The examples illustrate not only what we think should be done but what was in fact physically (and successfully) implemented in a wide variety of situations from small, private project studios to large, commercial land mark studios such as Lansdowne and CTS. Examples range in scope from individual spaces and rooms to multi studio facilities and cover the two principal strands of recording and mixing: MUSIC studios recording (tracking), mixing and mastering (including cutting) project to orchestral in scale examples have been taken from the private, commercial and educational sectors. POST PRODUCTION studios voice over (dubbing), FX recording ( Foley ), film mix studios (dubbing theatres) from small voice over studios for TV to large Dolby Premier Certified film mix theatres. Contents include hundreds of photographs together with detailed plans and construction drawings - including comprehensive specifications of materials and techniques - showing exactly how these environments were created.

Following Barry's death in 2002 a two volume format was adopted with new authors. Barry's Advanced Construction of Buildings retains the emphasis on larger scale buildings: primarily residential, commercial and industrial buildings constructed with load bearing frames. The text will be brought fully up to date, and will continue to explain construction technology through key functional and performance requirements for the main elements common to all buildings. With increased focus on low carbon, resilient buildings, the book will pay particular attention to the decisions required to ensure the built environment is as sustainable as possible, and the consequences of those decisions. With new in chapter' questions to better facilitate self-reflection and learning, the book will be in ideal companion and follow on to the fifth edition of Barry's Introduction to Construction of Buildings"--

Book excerpt: As heard on NPR's This American Life “Absorbing . . . Though it's non-fiction, The Feather Thief contains many of the elements of a classic thriller.” —Maureen Corrigan, NPR’s Fresh Air “One of the most peculiar and memorable true-crime books ever.” —Christian Science Monitor A rollicking true-crime adventure and a captivating journey into an underground world of fanatical fly-tiers and plume peddlers, for readers of The Stranger in the Woods, The Lost City of Z, and The Orchid Thief. On a cool June evening in 2009, after performing a concert at London's Royal Academy of Music, twenty-year-old American flautist Edwin Rist boarded a train for a suburban outpost of the British Museum of Natural History. Home to one of the largest ornithological collections in the world, the Tring museum was full of rare bird specimens whose gorgeous feathers were worth staggering amounts of money to the men who shared Edwin's obsession: the Victorian art of salmon fly-tying. Once inside the museum, the champion fly-tier grabbed hundreds of bird skins—some collected 150 years earlier by a contemporary of Darwin's, Alfred Russel Wallace, who'd risked everything to gather them—and escaped into the darkness. Two years later, Kirk Wallace Johnson was waist high in a river in northern New Mexico when his fly-fishing guide told him about the heist. He was soon consumed by the strange case of the feather thief. What would possess a person to steal dead birds? Had Edwin paid the price for his crime? What became of the missing skins? In his search for answers, Johnson was catapulted into a years-long, worldwide investigation. The gripping story of a bizarre and shocking crime, and one man's relentless pursuit of justice, The Feather Thief is also a fascinating exploration of obsession, and man's destructive instinct to harvest the beauty of nature.
