Between the 1880s and 1970s, many of these groups helped to create a strong and dynamic fishing industry that became a key component of the city's identity. Waves of varied immigrants continually refreshed the industry, adapting their traditional skills and technologies to San Diegan conditions. Innovations in boat design, nets, and baiting techniques reshaped the fleets that harvested tuna and sardines from the teeming waters. On shore, canning factories sprang up, seafood markets bustled with activity, and fish restaurants filled with hungry diners. The vivid stories and fascinating photographs in this volume recapture the energy and variety that were the hallmarks of San Diego's fishing industry--an industry that has left a deep multicultural imprint on today's city.

This approach iscalled co-management.This handbook describes the process of community-based co-management from its beginning, throughimplementation, to turnover to the community. It provides ideas, methods, techniques, activities, checklists, examples, questions and indicators for the planning and implementing of a process of community-basedco-management. It focuses on small-scale fisheries (freshwater, floodplain, estuarine, or marine) indeveloping countries, but is also relevant to small-scale fisheries in developed countries and to themanagement of other coastal resources (such as coral reefs, mangroves, sea grass, and wetlands). Book excerpt: A searing exposé of slavery and over-fishing on the high seas On November 9, 2008, near Kiribati in the Pacific, a Korean ship came alongside Tai Ching 21. The Taiwan-flagged fishing boat was eerily silent. Three life rafts were missing, and all 29 of the Taiwanese officers and Chinese, Indonesian and Filipino crew. A quest to discover the men's identities led journalist Michael Field into a dark world of foreign-flagged vessels fishing the waters of New Zealand, other Pacific nations, and the Southern Ocean. He uncovered brutality, misery and death - and impending ecological disaster- the destruction of the last great southern schools of fish. With researchers from University of Auckland, he forced the New Zealand government to take action - but with huge money at stake the plunder and appalling working conditions continue. And more and more boats are now risking lives and maritime disaster heading south to catch toothfish, most destined for New York restaurants and Las Vegas casino hotels.

Book excerpt: Editor Biography: ?smail Yksel Gen is a Ph.D candidate in the Department of fishing and Processing Technology at the University of Suleyman Demirel where he has been faculty member since 2011. ?smail Yksel completed his M.Sc. at Suleyman Demirel University and he has been in Portugal for the research of his M.Sc. thesis. He has been in Denmark for his Ph.D thesis at Denmark Technical University (DTU) with a national grant that was provided by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK). His research interests involve predictive modeling, shelf life prediction of seafood and interaction models to determine both the quality and safety of fishery products under different conditions. He has collaborated national and international projects on determination of quality and safety of seafood products, new product development and estimating the current situation of some fishery products to take precautions on quality and safety. He is still a member of scientific associations such as ISEKI-Food and International Association for Food Protection (IAFP). He has currently authored and co-authored seven peer-reviewed publications and attended more than twenty peer-reviewed national and international conferences. Book Description: Seafood and related products have an important place in the human diet; it provides for the protein needed and has a nutritional composition that has favorable health impacts on human beings. Considering the rapid increase in the world population and the demand in terms of protein needs that are provided by seafood, the necessary need to assure the quality and safety of seafood products has been prioritized. Due to nutritional composition, neutral pH, high moisture content, weak connective tissue and living environment (fresh and seawater), seafood is very perishable. Maintaining the quality and safety of seafood needs higher attention compared to other food products. This handbook compiles recent methods and applications, as well as technologies utilized to guarantee the quality and safety of various types of seafood from harvesting to the retail level. The status of emerging and hurdle technology applications, genomic, mathematical and computer-based methods, quality economics together with chemical, sensory and microbiological changes, and quality/safety of seafood products are reviewed and discussed in this book. The emphasis on less-known or under-valued species from different locales was intentional. This handbook is an abridged, streamlined but relatively comprehensive reference for food engineers and technologists, producers from the industry, and undergraduate and graduate students studying this field of academia. Target Audience: Undergraduate and graduate students from the departments of Food/seafood Engineers and technicians from food industry Academicians from the institutes and universities whose research interests lie on determination of seafood quality and safety
