Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Pacific has long been in need of a comprehensive guide to reef and shore fishes. This volume covers the inshore fish fauna of New Caledonia, the Loyalty Islands, the southern Gilbert Islands (Kiribati), Tuvalu, Fiji, the Wallis Islands, Tonga, Samoa, American Samoa, the Tokelau Islands, the Phoenix Islands, the Cook Islands, the Austral Islands, Rapa, the Society Islands, the Tuamoto Archipelago, the Marquesas Islands, and the Pitcairn Islands. It contains accounts of nearly 1,500 species of fishes, illustrated with more than 2,000 color photographs, taken mostly underwater. (A few drab species are illustrated by only black and white photographs or drawings.) Species accounts are headed by the English common name, the scientific name, the author or authors who described the fish, and the date of the description. This is followed by a concise list of the characteristics needed to identify the species, the total length it attains, its distribution, habitat, and in summary form what may be known of its biology. More than 600 references are given for those seeking more information on individual species. The introduction contains a two-page color spread of the main external features of fishes. An extensive glossary of scientific terms precedes the index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fishes of the South Pacific During the period from November 9, 1900 to September 21, 1903, it was the writer's privilege to make collections of fishes for the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum in the following islands: Tahiti and Raiatea, of the Society group; Tubuai, of the Austral group; Mangareva, of the Gambier group; Rarotonga, of the Cook group; Makatea, of the Paumotu group; Nukuhiva, of the Marquesas group; Fate, of the New Hebrides; Shortland, of the Solomon group. A total of 1550 specimens were secured, representing 375 species, 33 of which seem to be new to science. I am indebted to President Jordan for various suggestions and for the permission to compare my specimens with those contained in his collections from Samoa and Hawaii. The nomenclature adopted is essentially that adopted by President Jordan in his forthcoming report on the Fishes of Samoa, in the preparation of which the present writer has taken part. Alvin Seale. Book excerpt: Now available in the US, this is the revised and expanded fifth edition of a book that has been the standard reference work for divers, anglers and scientists for over 30 years. The new edition covers 1,670 fish species found in the seas of tropical Southeast Asia, the Southern Pacific islands and Australia--including the Great Barrier Reef, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. A must-have reference for divers, marine biologists, ecologists, commercial fisheries and sports anglers, this book includes a comprehensive identification guide to the families of reef fishes, with a definitive index. An informative and detailed Introduction includes area coverage; faunal composition; biology, behavior and ecology of reef fishes; classification of fishes, and much more. Originally published as Marine Fishes of South-East Asia, this edition contains numerous revisions in nomenclature affecting both the scientific Latin names and common names of the region's fishes. In all cases these have been made to reflect the current universally-accepted terminology. The common names in this book are the result of a recent initiative undertaken by the Australian Government and Seafood Services Australia. Each species is depicted in detailed, full-color illustrations by noted marine artists Roger Swainston and Jill Ruse, including over 35 new species. In many cases, the illustrations show both male and female examples. With more than 2,000 illustrations and 29 color photographs, this definitive field guide will continue to be an invaluable resource for professionals and hobbyists alike.
