This book was released on 2023-03-20 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2017, FAO launched its Global Capacity Development Programme to support the implementation of the Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter, and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing (PSMA) and complementary international instruments, regional mechanisms and tools to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The programme aims to contribute to national, regional and global efforts to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU fishing. For the proper implementation of the programme, FAO developed its fisheries training framework, based on a modular approach, which has been invaluable in harmonizing the courses delivered under the programme. This modular approach also provides flexibility for the creation of new courses to cater for specific needs. This prospectus provides an overview of the modules offered under the FAO fisheries training framework, including a detailed description of each module, its corresponding lectures and expected learning outcomes. Elsewhere, the prospectus provides detailed information on each of the courses currently offered, including their objectives, target participants and overall expected learning outcomes, as well as other relevant information.

Book excerpt: During the last decade, there has been a shift in the governance and management of fisheries to a broaderapproach that recognizes the participation of fishers, local stewardship, and shared decision-making.Through this process, fishers are empowered to become active members of the management team, balancing rights and responsibilities, and working in partnership with government. This approach iscalled co-management.This handbook describes the process of community-based co-management from its beginning, throughimplementation, to turnover to the community. It provides ideas, methods, techniques, activities, checklists, examples, questions and indicators for the planning and implementing of a process of community-basedco-management. It focuses on small-scale fisheries (freshwater, floodplain, estuarine, or marine) indeveloping countries, but is also relevant to small-scale fisheries in developed countries and to themanagement of other coastal resources (such as coral reefs, mangroves, sea grass, and wetlands). Thishandbook will be of significant interest to resource managers, practitioners, academics and students ofsmall-scale fisheries.

Book excerpt: Marine recreational fishing is a popular activity enjoyed by more than 9 million Americans annually and is a driver of the American ocean-or blue-economy. To ensure that fish populations are not overexploited, the NOAA Fisheries' Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP) monitors recreational catch through a variety of in-person, telephone, mail-in, and other surveys. NOAA Fisheries' management of recreational catch also must take into account annual catch limits (ACLs) established to prevent overfishing for all managed species in federal waters. While MRIP has worked to improve recreational catch surveys over the past decade, the surveys were never designed to meet the demands of in-season management of ACLs. In some cases, estimates of harvest have triggered accountability measures such as early season closures and reductions in future recreational ACLs, which have been a source of contention with the recreational fishing community. This report presents approaches for optimizing MRIP data and complementary data for in-season management and considers alternatives for managing recreational fisheries with ACLs to better serve both social and economic management objectives.

Book excerpt: "Beyond previous more simplistic approaches, this book takes a giant step towards understanding and translating into people-centered policies the actual position and complexity of fish production in Southeast Asian economies. Tackling how fi sheries and aquaculture are embedded in local and household economies and linked through dynamic supply chains to more distant, even global markets, the book makes essential policy and analytical recommendations. SEARCA and ISEAS have made a major contribution to the intellectual debate and action agenda for Southeast Asian fisheries." Book excerpt: This document contains the proceedings of the IMCSNET’s first ever virtual GFETW, which took place online on 13 and 14 July 2021. Nearly 600 monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) practitioners from around the world, as well as other fisheries stakeholders and organizations, registered to participate in the online conference, which consisted of a schedule of speakers, presentations, panel discussions, and interactive discussion rooms. In addition, the virtual platform software utilized for the GFETW facilitated the ability for participants to create and use private meeting rooms for networking sessions, as well as an online chatting function. One of the primary focuses of the IMCSNET is to increase fisheries MCS cooperation and collaboration between Member countries, especially with and between developing country Members The virtual conference included participants from both developing and developed nations as well as stakeholder organizations involved in fisheries MCS. The overall theme of the virtual GFETW was “Illuminating the Unknowns – Global Cooperation to Eliminate the “U’s” from Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing”. The GFETW focused on an interactive format highlighting three interactive panel discussions on emerging MCS areas of interest or challenges. The event also included MCS papers, presentations, and short videos relevant to one of the following four GFETW themes: cooperation and partnerships, risk assessment and analysis, technology as an enabler, and transparency.

This rapid assessment tool is designed to support coastal and island developing countries, including Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, in measuring improved sustainability outcomes for fishery systems. The report details improvements to be made to the five pillars of sustainable development: sustainable economic development, environmental sustainability, inclusive development, increasing scientific knowledge and ocean governance, with a focus on sustainable marine fisheries and seafood processing in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
