Book excerpt: Management strategies for fish populations in small impoundments are reviewed with consideration given to intensification techniques applied throughout the United States and Canada. The concept of balance in fish populations is used as a basis for illustrating the importance of maintaining desirable predator/prey relationships through stocking and harvest regulation of keystone predators. Generally, harvest levels for predators are reduced when species diversity and structural complexity of the environment are increased. Intensification is also achieved by enhancing water fertility through liming and fertilization. Case studies are presented representing contrasting climatic regions of North America while demonstrating similarities in management style. Principles and practices presented in this paper should be adaptable to the management of fisheries in small water bodies over a wider geographical range than discussed.

It flows through 6 counties, China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Viet Nam. The 4 downstream countries have formed the Mekong River Commission to promote sustainable development of the river and many of their people depend on it for their subsistence ? it has possible the largest freshwater fishery in the world, and the Mekong waters support rice agriculture in the delta in Viet Nam (which produces about 40% of that country's food) as well as in Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. China is now building the first large mainstream dam on the river, and has proposals for several more. These dams are likely to affect the downstream countries. Several of the downstream countries also have plans for large scale hydropower and irrigation development which could also impact the river. This book will provide a solid overview of the biophysical environment of the Mekong together with a discussion of the possible impacts, biophysical, economic and social, of some possible development scenarios. It is intended to provide a technical basis which can inform the growing political and conservation debate about the future of the Mekong River, and those who depend on it. The principal characteristics of these water bodies are presented here, together with a survey of the most important species of fish, both indigenous and exotic, inhabiting the lakes and reservoirs. Details of inter-specific fish relationships are also discussed. Annual fish production from all inland waters, including aquaculture, had reached 988 000 tons by 1987. In addition anglers probably landed another 200 000 tons per year. Lake catches accounted for approximately 40-44% of the commercial catches, while the reservoir and riverine cataches contributed 28-34% and 23-30% respectively. Methods of fishery management are discussed, with emphasis on intensification practices. These include the establishment of highly productive fish farms and hatcheris, the conversion of reservoir shallows and small lakes into fish farms, the use of warmed effluent water from power stations, and the problems of introducing and acclimataing new species particularly Coregonidae and Chinese carps. The basic technical designs of fish passes and barriers are described, also details, design and operation of active and passive fishing equipment. Mention is made of legislation which governs fishing in the USSR, and some account is given of the development and current status of fisheries in the Aral and Caspian seas.
