Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fisheries resources are an important component of natural resources. It is an important source of high-quality animal protein and food for humans, which provides employment, economic benefits and social welfare for people engaged in fishing activities. It also has played an important role in food safety, economic development, and foreign trade. Fisheries resources economics is an important branch of both applied economics and resource economics. Its research object is fishery resources and its economic problems. The economics of fishery resources is to focus on the relationship between the demand for human economic activities and the supply of fishery resources, as well as between fishery resources and its development. This book expounds the reasons for the economic problems of fishery resources and the theoretical principles for solving them, so as to reveal the objective rules of the allocation of fishery resources in different regions and at different times, to coordinate the relationship between the utilization of fishery resources and economic development, and to realize the sustainable development of fishery economy. This book will also provide learning materials for undergraduates, graduate students and practitioners engaged in fishery resources development and scientific management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book synthesises the historical trends of the lake fisheries, the lake ecology, biology and biodiversity, socio-economics, stock assessment, aquaculture, fish quality assurance, environmental quality and management of the fisheries resources. The evolution of fisheries in Lake Victoria has undergone dramatic changes over the last few decades, leading to both ecological and socio-economic consequences. The lake has changed from one dominated by haplochromines in the 1950s, to one currently dominated by Nile perch, ‘dagaa’ (Rastrineobola argentea) and Nile tilapia. These changes have mainly been driven by the introduction of the predatory Nile perch in the lake, eutrophication due to increased human activities in the catchment, increased human population growth, overfishing and changes in the global climate system. This work should therefore be a particularly useful reference to fisheries scientists and managers, potential investors, students and other professionals who may be interested in the Lake Victoria fisheries.

Book excerpt: Fish Conservation offers, for the first time in a single volume, a readable reference with a global approach to marine and freshwater fish diversity and fishery resource issues. Gene Helfman brings together available knowledge on the decline and restoration of freshwater and marine fishes, providing ecologically sound answers to biodiversity declines as well as to fishery management problems at the subsistence, recreational, and commercial levels. Written in an engaging and accessible style, the book: considers the value of preserving aquatic biodiversity offers an overview of imperiled fishes on a taxonomic and geographic basis presents a synthesis of common characteristics of imperiled fishes and their habitats details anthropogenic causes of decline examines human exploitation issues addresses ethical questions surrounding exploitation of fishes The final chapter integrates topics and evaluates prospects for arresting declines, emphasizing the application of evolutionary and ecological principles in light of projected trends. Throughout, Helfman provides examples, explores case studies, and synthesizes available information from a broad taxonomic, habitat, and geographic range. Fish Conservation summarizes the current state of knowledge about the degradation and restoration of diversity among fishes and the productivity of fishery resources, pointing out areas where progress has been made and where more needs to be done. Solutions focus on the application of ecological knowledge to solving practical problems, recognizing that effective biodiversity conservation depends on meeting human needs through management that focuses on long term sustainability and an ecosystem perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are some marine fish super abundant, attracting the attention of commercial fisheries? The full answer to this question can only be found by looking not just at biological aspects, such as reproduction and population dynamics, but also at the surrounding oceanic conditions, by analysing physical, chemical, geomorphological and other data. The sciences of fisheries and oceanography have in the past followed separate developments, but with the advent of the new science of fisheries oceanography, oceanographic information is being used to solve ecological problems in fisheries. Fisheries Oceanography provides thorough coverage of the major aspects of this important subject. The editors of this text book have drawn together an impressive list of contributing authors who offer vital insights into early life history, migration, genetic variability, climate change effects, models and the use of satellites in fisheries oceanography. An important aspect of the book is the inclusion of chapter commentaries by leading world authorities. The book concludes with an overview of problems facing fisheries, and how fisheries oceanography can be utilized to resolve some of these problems in the future. Fisheries workers, oceanographers and marine scientists will find a great deal of current information vital to their work in Fisheries Oceanography. As a text book it will be of great use to all those studying and researching marine fisheries, including BSc, MSc and other postgraduate students particularly in fisheries, fish biology, marine biology, oceanography and ecology.

Book excerpt: The ten countries which border the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden depend to varying degrees on the area for their fish supplies with some countries such as South Yemen being totally dependent on the fish resources while to others, such as Israel and Jordan, the area is of minor importance. Catches of all fish species have been increasing slowly in recent years and in 1986 totalled 60.9 thousand tons from the Red Sea and 99.4 thousand tons from the Gulf of Aden. After reviewing the resource assessment and survey work which has been carried out in the area it was concluded that further increases in landings could be achieved on a sustainable basis. However such increases will come from the development of new fisheries and the expansion of the areas presently Fished rather than from traditional fisheries which are, in general, fully exploited. Utilization and marketing problems, particularly with small pelagic and mesopelagic species, however need to be addressed for the full potential of the area to be realized.

Book excerpt: This document provides a review, commentary and tabulations of the main trends that have occurred in exploitation of fisheries resources since the 1970s, largely as they are reflected in the FAO database on fishery landings, supplemented with selected information from the fishery literature. Reviews were prepared separately for the 15 main areas into which FAO divides the world's oceans for statistical purposes. They are then compared from a global perspective to reveal relative trends by species and areas, which are highlighted. Several special topics are reviewed, including tuna and tuna-like species, whales and dolphins, and environmental issues in fisheries.
