Book excerpt: This research title is Fischer-Troprch(FT) Synthesis Of Hydrocarbon Over Mesoporous Co/SBA- 15 Catalyst : Influence Of Cobalt And Zinc Precursors Loading. The FT process is a set of chemical reaction that convert mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen into liquid hydrocarbons. The objectives are about to synthesis S B A- 15 mesoporous silica, to synthesis Co - Z n/ SB A- 15 mesoporous catalyst and to determine the influence and effect of promoter on the catalytic properties. The synthesis of Co- Z n/SB A- 15 catalystis prepared by an impregnation method. Cobalt nitrate and Zinc nitrate will be used as precursors and promoter respectively and being introduced as metal to the catalyst. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) isused to identify types of chemical bonds in the catalyst where then Si-O- Si functional group is detected because of the present of silica from Tetraethyl-orthosilicate, TEOS. Themorphology of the catalyst surface determined by Scanning Electron Microscope( SEM) and it is analyzed that the catalyst to have'rope-like' structure and no change in morphology after modification. After Cobalt and Zinc is added, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) has detected that there are cobalt crystalline formed and the amorphous shape graph of Pure SBA15 is changed with new peeks detected due to intensity changes. The best BET surface area analyzed is 375.9021m2 /g by the sample of 10% Co 15% Zn-SBA15 catalyst which also poses big pore volume of 0.480953 cm3 /g. Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA) measured the decomposition of the samplesat temperature of 100°C, 250C, 300C and 450C which caused by decomposition of adsorbed water, organic functional group, dehydroxylation of silicate and nitrate group respectively. Thus, with all revenues collected from all the tests and compared with previous studies, this study found to be one small achievement in the catalyst industry.

Book excerpt: Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is one of the most promising ways for the conversion of syngas to hydrocarbon products. Supported cobalt is the preferred catalyst for FTS due to its high selectivity to heavy hydrocarbons, low activity for water-gas-shift reaction and comparatively low price. Cobalt loaded SBA-15 catalysts were prepared by two different techniques including wetness impregnation and direct-synthesis methods. The characterization of the synthesized samples was done by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and N2 adsorption-desorption,. XRD measurements showed that the calcined cobalt catalyst did not modify the structure of SBA-15, proving that Co was present under the form of Co3O4 in the catalyst. The hexagonal structure of pores of SBA-15 was confirmed by SEM images for all samples.BET surface area showed that Co/SBA-15 catalyst prepared by direct synthesis method was produced high surface area and pore volume compared prepared by wetness impregnation method.

Book excerpt: Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is a part of gas-to-liquids (GTL) technology, which produces synthetic liquid hydrocarbons from natural gas. Recently the production of clean fuels and particularly of synthetic diesel by means of the FTS process has aroused renewed interest in both industrial and academic field. This process was shown to be catalyzed by certain transition metals, such as Co which present the highest activity. This research work is about the synthesis of SBA-15 and preparation of catalyst with different promoter Zr, Zn, Mn - Co based supported by SBA-15 by wet impregnation catalysts and characterizes all sampling. All materials were characterized by several physico-chemical techniques such as TGA, SEM and FTIR. The catalytic and characterization results show a great influence of mesoporous support porosity on the structure, reducibility and FTS catalytic behavior of cobalt oxide species supported over these ordered materials. After modification of SBA-15 by Co with different loading, the particles found to be attached closely with each other. The SEM picture shows a large number of SBA-15 particles attaching closely with one another. So this will make catalyst more efficient and effective during FT process. Then, using FTIR, the functional groups will be observed with certain wavelength in the samples such as cobalt oxides, Si-O-Si, Si-CH3, zinc oxide, OH band, Si-C, and others. Besides that, the identification of metal inside SBA-15 was determined by comparing the pure SBA-15 with the incorporated metal on SBA-15. For this research, the characterization of the catalyst by selecting Zn as promoter have quiet similar characterization with noble metal that already investigate.

Book excerpt: Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) has been used on a commercial scale for more than eighty years. It was initially developed for strategic reasons because it offered a source of transportation fuels that was independent from crude oil. Unlike crude, Fischer-Tropsch synthetic crude is rich in olefins and oxygenates, while being sulphur and nitrogen free. Consequently, the catalysis involved in refining it is significantly different and only a few catalysts have been developed for the purpose. Until now, an account of this topic has been missing from the literature, despite mounting interest in the technology. This is the first book to provide a review and analysis of the literature (journal and patent) on the catalysis needed to refine syncrude to transportation fuels. It specifically highlights the impact of oxygenates and how oxygenates affect selectivity and deactivation. This aspect is also related to the refining of biomass derived liquids. Topics covered include: dimerisation / oligomerisation, isomerisation / hydroisomerisation, catalytic cracking / hydrocracking and hydrogenation, catalytic reforming, aromatic alkylation, etherification, dehydration, and some oxygenate and wax specific conversions.

Book excerpt: Since the turn of the last century when the field of catalysis was born, iron and cobalt have been key players in numerous catalysis processes. These metals, due to their ability to activate CO and CH, haev a major economic impact worldwide. Several industrial processes and synthetic routes use these metals: biomass-to-liquids (BTL), coal-to-liquids (CTL), natural gas-to-liquids (GTL), water-gas-shift, alcohol synthesis, alcohol steam reforming, polymerization processes, cross-coupling reactions, and photocatalyst activated reactions. A vast number of materials are produced from these processes, including oil, lubricants, waxes, diesel and jet fuels, hydrogen (e.g., fuel cell applications), gasoline, rubbers, plastics, alcohols, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, feed-stock chemicals, and other alternative materials. However, given the true complexities of the variables involved in these processes, many key mechanistic issues are still not fully defined or understood. This Special Issue of Catalysis will be a collaborative effort to combine current catalysis research on these metals from experimental and theoretical perspectives on both heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts. We welcome contributions from the catalysis community on catalyst characterization, kinetics, reaction mechanism, reactor development, theoretical modeling, and surface science.

Book excerpt: The need for high-value added chemicals, such as functionalized hydrocarbons is growing rapidly. Among such functionalized hydrocarbons, olefins, alcohols, nitriles and amines with varying chain lengths are of prime interest. Traditionally, functionalized hydrocarbons are synthetized from petroleum feedstocks and are further processed by homogeneous catalysis. The major drawback of these traditional synthesis routes are: i) lack of regioselectivity, ii) use of expensive reagents, iii) multi-step processes and iv) formation of toxic by-products.In the present work, we synthetized functionalized hydrocarbons with a high regioselectivity in a "one-step one-pot" process employing Fischer Tropsch (FT) chain lengthening technology with a syngas (CO+H2) rich in CO, similar to compositions received from biomass feedstocks. Because nitrogenates are not observed during traditional FT synthesis, we used FT technology as a vehicle for producing long-chain hydrocarbon skeletons and ammonia as a co-reagent to provide terminal nitrogen functionalization. We showed that the reaction can be tuned via adjustments of the H2/CO ratio so as to favor the production of either terminal amines or nitriles over a promoted Co/MnOx catalyst. Up to 80% combined selectivity of chain-lengthened terminal olefins/amines/nitriles with high regioselectivity was reached. The physicochemical characterization of the spent Co/MnOx catalyst showed that the bulk of the catalyst was composed of Co2C while the surface contained Co-C-N complexes. We demonstrated using Chemical Transient Kinetics (CTK) that the formation of nitrogen-containing compounds during FT synthesis results from a surface polymerization involving a C1 monomer. We also showed that ammonia inhibits the formation of methane and increases the selectivity of alkenes over cobalt-based catalysts. Ammonia also enhances the water gas shift reaction over catalysts containing transition metal oxides.Olefins and oxygenates were also synthetized using well dispersed colloidal iron-based nanoparticles as catalyst. We showed that the combined functionalized hydrocarbon selectivity over pure colloidal iron nanoparticles is as high as 82% (72 % olefins + 10% alcohols) at H2/CO=0.3, while this selectivity over promoted colloidal iron nanoparticles is 78% (43% olefins, 35% alcohols) at H2/CO=0.3. Commercial iron bulk catalysts used in FT plants lead to a selectivity up to 6% of oxygenates, making our catalysts promising candidates for industrial applications.
