Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent recession has brought fiscal policy back to the forefront, with economists and policy makers struggling to reach a consensus on highly political issues like tax rates and government spending. At the heart of the debate are fiscal multipliers, whose size and sensitivity determine the power of such policies to influence economic growth. Fiscal Policy after the Financial Crisis focuses on the effects of fiscal stimuli and increased government spending, with contributions that consider the measurement of the multiplier effect and its size. In the face of uncertainty over the sustainability of recent economic policies, further contributions to this volume discuss the merits of alternate means of debt reduction through decreased government spending or increased taxes. A final section examines how the short-term political forces driving fiscal policy might be balanced with aspects of the long-term planning governing monetary policy. A direct intervention in timely debates, Fiscal Policy after the Financial Crisis offers invaluable insights about various responses to the recent financial crisis.

Book excerpt: The economic and financial crisis is affecting the fiscal accounts of virtually every country. Public sector support for the financial system, fiscal stimulus and the automatic stabilizers, as well as the revenue decline from the downturn in commodity and asset prices, are leading to sharp increases in deficits and debt stocks around the world. Expansionary fiscal policy continues to be necessary in the short term to stimulate economic recovery. But it is now essential that governments reassess the state of their public finances in light of the global crisis and adopt strategies that will ensure medium- and long-term fiscal sustainability. Many of the advanced economies most affected by the crisis are also those where age-related spending will increase markedly in the coming years, adding particular urgency to the need to identify medium-term consolidation strategies. This new paper, which focuses mainly on advanced and emerging market economies, employs projections based on the April 2009 World Economic Outlook to quantify the fiscal implications of the crisis for a cross-section of countries. The authors assess the post-shock fiscal balances and debt outlook, and suggest ways for governments to clarify their strategies for maintaining fiscal solvency.

This book was released on 2017-06-29 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn About America's Monetary Policy, Interest Rates, and Economic projections! CBO's economic forecast--which underlies its budget projections--indicates that, under current law, the economy will expand through 2018 at a pace that leads to further tightening of the labor market. Greater demand for workers will put downward pressure on the unemployment rate and upward pressure on the rate of labor force participation. As the amount of unused productive resources in the economy shrinks, inflation and interest rates are projected to rise. In the later part of the 10-year projection period, annual output growth is projected to average 1.9 percent, constrained by a relatively slow increase in the size of the nation's labor force. High school students and above may find this report beneficial for U.S. economy, economic conditions, and America's debt research papers. American citizens, small business, corporations, lobbyists, fiscal managers, economists, and media news outlets may find this information invaluable for understanding America's future growth and management of debt. Members of Congress, government agency personnel at Federal and State level, plus investors may be interested in this updated edition. Interspersed with attractive graphics and tabular data, this updated report estimates that this year's deficit will be noticeably smaller than the U.S. Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projected in March, and fiscal year 2015 will mark the sixth consecutive year in which the deficit declined as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) since it peaked in 2009. This report provides economists, fiscal planners, and budget teams with a valuable tool for long-term decision making based on CBO's projections. In addition to the Gross Domestic Product and its growth, this report also provides guidance for areas of Federal revenues, Baseline Budget Projections for 2016 to 2025, and Federal Debt from 2016 to 2025, plus more. High school students and above may find this report beneficial for U.S. economy, economic conditions, and America's debt research papers. Book excerpt: Chapter 1 argues that fiscal policy should remain nimble and strengthen its medium-term frameworks, as countries face highly uncertain and differentiated prospects. Vaccination has saved lives and is helping fuel a nascent recovery, but risks are elevated amidst new virus variants, high debt, and poverty. In advanced economies, the shift in fiscal support toward medium-term packages to “build back better” will have overall positive effects globally. Emerging markets and low-income developing countries face a more challenging outlook, with permanent economic scarring and revenue losses. They need international support to increase vaccine availability and financing to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Many countries find themselves in a situation where fiscal support is still invaluable to protect lives and livelihoods. At the same time, governments are also facing questions on their elevated debt and gross financing needs. Chapter 2 provides countries with guidance on how they can both avoid withdrawing fiscal support too early, and yet signal to the public that their debt levels are sustainable in the long run. To commit to future deficit reduction, governments have several instruments, including undertaking structural fiscal reforms (such as pension reform or subsidies reform), pre-legislating changes to taxes or spending, committing to fiscal rules that lead to deficit reduction in the future. Countries that follow debt rules, for instance, manage to reduce debt faster that other countries, although fiscal rules should also provide enough flexibility to spend in times of need. Overall, governments that commit to sound public finances and that achieve high levels of fiscal transparency reap meaningful benefits: their budgets are more credible, their announcements are better perceived by the media, and they pay lower interest rates on their debt.

Book excerpt: NOTE: NO FURTHER DISCOUNT FOR THIS PRINT PRODUCT--OVERSTOCK SALE-- Significantly reduced list price while supplies last The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has updated its baseline budget projections for the coming decade. By statute, those projections must assume that current laws and policies remain in place. The baseline is therefore not intended to ber a prediction of future budgetary outcomes; instead, it is meant to serve as a neutral benchmark lawmakers can use to measure the effects of proposed changes to spending and revenues. Economists, finacial planners, political scientists, lawmakers, accountants, coporate and small business personnel, government relations staff may be interested in these projections. Students pursuing coursework in political science and economics, specifically America's debt and growth sectors may be most interested in this volume.
