Book Synopsis The Alien Jew in the British Imagination, 1881–1905 by : Hannah Ewence
Download or read book The Alien Jew in the British Imagination, 1881–1905 written by Hannah Ewence and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-27 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how fin de siècle Britain and Britons displaced spatially-charged apprehensions about imperial decline, urban decay and unpoliced borders onto Jews from Eastern Europe migrating westwards. The myriad of representations of the ‘alien Jew’ that emerged were the product of, but also a catalyst for, a decisive moment in Britain’s legal history: the fight for the 1905 Aliens Act. Drawing upon a richly diverse collection of social and political commentary, including fiction, political testimony, ethnography, travel writing, journalism and cartography, this volume traces the shifting rhetoric around alien Jews as they journeyed from the Russian Pale of Settlement to London’s East End. By employing a unique and innovative reading of both the aliens debate and racialized discourse concerned with ‘the Jew’, Hannah Ewence demonstrates that ideas about ‘space’ and 'place’ critically informed how migrants were viewed; an argument which remains valid in today’s world.

Download or read book Double Lives written by Helen McCarthy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Fabulous' - The Times 'A milestone in women's history' - Observer 'Groundbreaking ... a fascinating read' - Herald In Britain today, three-quarters of mothers are in employment and paid work is an unremarkable feature of women's lives after childbirth. Yet a century ago, working mothers were in the minority, excluded altogether from many occupations, whilst their wage-earning was widely perceived as a social ill. In Double Lives, Helen McCarthy accounts for this remarkable transformation and the momentous consequences it has had for Britain. Recovering the everyday worlds of working mothers, this groundbreaking history forces us not only to re-evaluate the past, but to ask anew how current attitudes towards mothers in the workplace have developed and how far we have to go. 'Impressive and nuanced' - Guardian 'Brilliant' - Literary Review
Book Synopsis Landmark Cases in Consumer Law by : Jodi Gardner
Download or read book Landmark Cases in Consumer Law written by Jodi Gardner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-11 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the history of the common law foundations of consumer law, and encourages readers to rethink the role that consumer law plays in our society. Consumer law is often constructed as purely statute-based law. However as this collection will demonstrate this is far from the truth. Much of the history of the common law concerns consumer transactions and markets. Case law has often established or modified the ground rules of consumer markets, has had a patterning effect on the economic organisation of markets, and has expressed cultural visions of the market and consumers. An analysis of landmark cases of consumer law allows many traditional cases to be viewed through a new and distinct lens, providing significant academic and intellectual value. The collection also includes a unique socio-legal perspective, considering the role that consumer law has played in addressing racial discrimination, LGBTQ challenges and the rights of women. This collection of landmark cases demonstrates the theoretical and practical significance of consumer law through a wide range of contributions by distinguished authors from the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States and Australia.

Book excerpt: 'An impressive range of sources... a fascinating, thorough and well produced book. Well Suited's wide scope will appeal to a range of historians - those interested in costume and textiles, gender, Jewish history, economics and business as well as Leeds residents for whom, even if they were not dependent on it, the clothing industry provided a backdrop to everyday life for much of the twentieth century.' -Costume Society'This is a tale of one city, a comprehensive account of an industry extraordinarily important to the economy of Leeds for over a century. But while the book focuses on this national centre of clothing manufacture, the issues considered are anything but parochial.' -Costume Society'A most useful point of reference.' -English Historical Review'A fascinating survey... fills a major gap in the literature of economic and social history... the work will be widely welcomed by historians of all persuasions.' -Northern History'The book is attractively illustrated with maps and photographs of old Leeds. The appendix provides summary information on the histories of a considerable number of Leeds clothing firms, and will be of great assistance to future researchers... As an explanation of the changing fortunes of the Leeds clothing industry Honeyman's account is effective.' -Business History'A lively and well researched book.' - Geoffrey Owen, Financial TimesThe making of cloth as a central element within industrialization has been the subject of intense scrutiny, yet the industry that created garments from that cloth has been largely neglected. This book remedies this neglect through a study of the Leeds tailoring trade. Leeds occupies a special place in the history of the UK clothing industry: by the outbreak of the First World War it had become the nation's foremost producer of menswear, and the city remained the production and distribution centre for men's tailoring until the 1980s.
