Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common School Spelling Book American school children, from the descendants of the early colonists to the little immigrants of today, come from many races. These races do not attach the same sounds to the letters of the English alphabet. But if American chil dren may see in the pages of their first spelling book the usual combinations of English sounds in words, if they are made to feel the strength and beauty and natural growth of these words, they will develop instinctively a kind of language patriotism. They will come to know that the languages of their parents are represented just as truly in the structure of the English language as their races are rep resented in the American people. These different race-elements in our language have brought with them their conflicting systems of spelling. Nevertheless, in spite of this conflict, the majority of Eng lish words are fairly regular in spelling; that is, they are spelled according to rational principles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Spelling Book After interest in a word has been aroused, the child's mind must be concentrated upon the peculiarity of its spelling and appealed to through all possible avenues, the eye, the ear, and the hand. So clear and strong should be the image formed that it becomes individual, even personal. For this reason, words included in this book have not been classified after the ace, mace, lace fashion, but have been purposely distributed so that each new word invites to fresh attack. There is no less authority for this mode of procedure than William T. Harris, who says that spelling lists should be arranged so as not to bring together a number of words of the same combination, and thereby paralyze the memory, as is too frequently the case in the lists given in spelling-books which, for example, collect in one lesson the words ending in tion, or tain, or ture, or ctous, etc., thus giving the pupil by the first word that is spelled a key to all that follow. In the first grade, however, there is a list of words containing the fundamental phonograms for ear training. The words in the book have not been syllabicated for two reasons that the child's image of the new word may be a unit, and that he may master it more thoroughly by analyzing it for himself. Especial attention is called to the exercises in construction which offer the child a larger practice in the ultimate use to which spelling is put that of composition. They are planned to correlate with the child's life at home and at school and to give him, as need arises, the spelling for particular words. (see index on pages xiii and xiv, also Suggestions to Teachers.) It is believed that in each case the lists of words will be found to include not only words requiring drill, but also words that will lead to a fuller life and a choicer diction. It is certainly desirable for a child to associate modest demeanor, self-control, and august presence with Washington; patience. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Howell First Reader All the spellings in the howell primer are repeated in this book; and for any child it is a complete introduction to reading in the English language. When he masters the howell first reader, he can read anything he may have occasion to read. For the beginner in this series does more than learn mere words; he learns the spelling ele ments, and thus becomes an independent reader. This book begins with the spellings taught in the howell primer; pages 9 - 20 contain nothing new in the way of spelling to the child that has mastered the Primer, though some new words are met with here. The method is the same as that of the Primer only one new spelling element is taught at a time thus the grading is regular and easy. Without taking too much space for a discussion of methods of teaching (which would be unfair to the purchasers of a book for children), the author would urge teachers to see that their pupils learn the word lists; review them often; a mastery of them will give pupils power to read not only this book, but any other book. Do not however, require beginners to learn by heart the spelling of all these words if elementary pupils can read them easily, that is enough to expect. A manual on the teaching of elementary reading, with special application to the howell primer and the howell first reader, is in preparation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Reader: With 4, 000 Words for Spelling by Sound This series of school books is based upon the principle that children may be taught to spell and read by sound thousands of English words as easily as words are taught in German schools. The method has long been followed in schools under the author's supervision and in the direction of the education of his children at home. The present irrational mode of spelling some English words and the unscientific methods often employed in teaching all our words have frequently proven an insuperable barrier against the acquisition of a knowledge of the art of reading by a large class of children who have not been able to go to school long enough to learn how to read with sufficient ease and fluency to gain a love of literature before they must leave school to engage in the fierce struggle of bread-winning. To change irrational spelling is beyond our power, but to pursue a scientific mode of teaching reading is open to all teachers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bailey-Manly Spelling Book Wm present in this book a plan for the teaching of spelling which has been in successful use for several years. Its main features were determined some ten years ago on the basis of long experience in teaching, and tne details have been subjected to the test of actual use ever since. The success of the plan in the school in which it was first tried and in which the details were worked out has led to the use of it in manuscript form in other schools, and it has been equally successful in them. The vocabulary has been chosen and graded with the utmost care. A large number of school books and written exercises were examined, and from them were selected the best 250 words for the first year, the best 300 for the second, and so on. The words were carefully catalogued and checked as used, so that the time of the pupil should not be wasted in useless repetition, and yet that certain especially refractory or elusive words should be repeated again and again until their mastery was assured. Continued tests of these lists, both as to the words which they should contain and the proper method and order of presenting them to the child, have given results in which we feel the highest confidence. The care with which the selection and grading of material 'has been carried out will, we feel, become increasingly evident to any teacher using the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Book, Word and Sentence Work, Easy Steps in Spelling Outline. - The poor results obtained by attempting to teach spell ing in an Incidental, desultory way have led to a demand for regular graded work in spelling, similar to that done in Arithmetic and Lan guage. Spelling-books have been made to meet this demand, but generally they are neither graded to the capacity of the pupils nor simple enough to be used at the very beginning of school life, when the forms of words can be most easily impressed on the child's mind. This will naturally be true if we attempt to group words according to their meaning; as for instance, words indicating color, names of vehicles, names of flowers, geographical names, etc. In the study of spelling, what the pupil needs to consider first is not the finer shades of meaning, the parts of speech, etc. These belong to language study, and take their proper places in another part of the school curriculum. The thing to be considered first, and to be made prominent, is the use of letters to express sound; and the words should be grouped, therefore, always with reference to this basis. This plan has been closely followed in the Grade Spellers, which, as their name indicates, are arranged for the various grades in the school course, the first book being simple enough for the work done in the first two years of school life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Child's Own Spelling Book There are three factors to be taken into consideration in teaching the child to spell any word; namely, (1 the meaning (2) the pronunciation, and (3) the spelling. Tests which have been made show that it is never safe to take any one of these three factors for granted. If a child does not know the meaning of a word, then he cannot use it and he has no need of spelling it. If he mispronounces it, he is likely to misspell it. It thus appears that both meaning and pronunciation enter into the spelling task. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revised Elementary Spelling Book No better Spelling-book than Dr. Webster's has ever been presented to the American people. The unparalleled extent of its circulation furnishes ample proof of the high estimation in which it is held by an enlightened public. For many years it has been almost the only Spelling-book used in the Southern States, as well as in other sections of the old Union; and his Dictionary may be found in almost every family, occupying, as it deservedly does, a pre-eminence over all others. Hut those friendly relations which once existed between the Northern and Southern States have been severed by a protracted, unjust and oppressive Federal legislation, and thus we have been driven from them, and the channel through which we have, hitherto, been accustomed to obtain our supplies is now closed by blockade; the offspring of an unjustifiable and tyrannical war, which is waged against us by those who should have continued to be our friends. Driven from them never to return, we ask, what must now be done to meet the wants of our Schools? This is an important question. When the compiler conceived the idea of preparing a Spelling-book to meet fully the necessities of the country, he soon became convinced that to make a better book than Webster's would be exceedingly difficult, if not impossible. It occurred to his mind that a revised edition of the Elementary Spelling book, adapted to the wants of the people of the Confederate States of America, would be all that could be desired.
