Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Greek The derivations of Greek words which are not primitives, and of English words from the Greek, are occasionally given; yet much in this field has been purposely left to the teacher. Much also of this work may better be post poned till a later period in the study; as the mastery of the inflections should be the first object, and receive nearly undivided attention. Few directions are given in this work for parsing; partly, because it is supposed the learner has already studied Latin, and may in Greek adopt the same methods with which he has already become familiar; partly also, because the old, humdrum, mechanical system of parsing may be carried to a very injurious extent. While in many schools it has been entirely neglected, to the ruin of all thorough and exact scholarship, in a few, and those among the best in the country, it has probably occupied too much time, at the expense of familiar and varied exercises in the construction of phrases and sentences. The more constantly these latter exercises are resorted to, under a skilful and wide-awake teacher, who really understands Greek, the more rapid will be the advancement of the learner, the greater his interest in the study, and the more accurate, critical, and thorough his knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Introduction to German Philology The First Introduction to German Philology, which originally formed the Appendix to the author's Progres sive German Composition, and was not designed as a separate publication, contains an elementary but sufficiently exhaustive sketch of the historical development of the language, chapters on Derivation and Word-building, and an Etymological Glossary. Much may be said for and against the study of the philological element of a language at school. The author is convinced of its utility, and ventures to hope that this little book will be approved by those who desire to see the study of German recognised as a means of mental discipline and culture, hardly inferior to the'study of the ancient classics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Classical Philology, Vol. 1 A Latin Grammar, or a Latin Modes and Tenses, arranged upon this scheme, so that the very place of the treatment of a construction would show its essential original or still - remaining force, and its relationship to other constructions, - would gain greatly in organic unity, in clearness, and in the power of awakening interest and developing intel ligence. And this would be true even if, in an elementary book, the constructions the history of which is more difficult to grasp were left without explanation, and merely, by their placing, associated in the young mind with other constructions, their relations to which would be made clear in due time in more advanced books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies and Notes in Philology and Literature, Vol. 7 In the standard modern Spanish, the language of Castile, the only signs denoting sibilant sounds are ch, s, and x (when popularly pronounced s). In the older speech this particular class of consonants was much more extensive and embraced sounds which now show little or no traces of their former quality. Altogether, Old Spanish had seven different sibilant sounds, represented by the following signs: c or c before e, i; c before a, o, u; z; s; ss; x; g before e, i; j; ch. In general it may be said that the sibilant nature of these Old Spanish signs needs little demonstration, being well vouched for by the testimony of grammarians, who, of necessity, had to define them as they best could, and by the practices common to the Arabic and Jewish portions of the Spanish-speaking people, who, writing Spanish with Arabic or Hebrew characters, used sibilant signs for all these sounds. The most important of the utterances of the grammarians have been collected by the eminent lexicographer Cuervo, whose article, Disquisiciones sobre antigua ortografia y pronunciacion castellanas (Revue hispanique, II, x ff.), appeared while the present treatise was in course of preparation, and has been its chief source of information as to this particular evidence. Only a few confirmatory notices can be added as a supplement to his citations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Child's Grammar: First Lessons in Language This book is what its title implies, a Child's Grammar. It was written for the children, not for grammarians and critical scholars of the language. Its chief aim is not to propose new principles, but to simplify and make easy such as are already known, and adapt them to the capaci ties of young pupils. The effort has also been made by means of pictures and various novel devices to awaken and sustain the interest of the pupil and relieve the study of much of its tediousness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greek in English: First Lessons in Greek; With Special Reference to the Etymology of English Words of Greek Origin The issue of a second edition of this book calls for very little modification of What was said in the preface to the first. The object of it, as then stated, is to enable pupils to gain some real and living knowledge of that part of English which came from Greek, without at the same time compelling them to waste time and brain - tissue in mental discipline of doubtful value. Let it be said at once, however, that the writer has no faith in royal roads to learning; does not pro fess to have compounded an educational nostrum which will, in a few weeks' time, electrify a boy or girl into the mastery of a difficult tongue; and does believe heartily in giving an important place in our educational system, for some genera tions yet, to the patient and thorough study of the Greek language and literature. This book is not intended to lessen the number of those who shall enter upon such a course of study, indeed it is hoped that it may increase that number. Yet it is not a sufficient introduction to the reading of a classic author, and hence is not a rival of the various excel lent First Lessons in use. It merely attempts to teach that minimum which even those who wish to banish the study of Greek from our schools would admit can least easily be spared; and it is written in the belief that that portion is absolutely essential to a ready command of a full English vocabulary. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Greek Book Since the publication of my Beginner's Greek Book in 1892, I have from time to time had letters from teachers in different parts of the country, who have informed me that the Beginner's Book, because of its length, was not well adapted for use in the schools in which they taught, and who have urged me to prepare a briefer book on the same plan. They wished a book, they said, which could be completed in two terms, and which would properly prepare their pupils for the rapid but exact reading of a book of the Anabasis during the last third of the year. The First Greek Book is an attempt to meet this reasonable request. I am aware that it is impossible that any elementary book should be equally well adapted to the needs of all schools but I have at least succeeded in making this book briefer than its immediate predecessor. In writing it I have aimed to give, first, only such fundamental facts of Greek grammar as the young pupil must know before he can begin to read the connected narrative of Xenophon intelligently and with pleasure, and secondly, a moderate amount of practice, both in reading and in writing, in the application of these principles. I have entirely excluded from the eighty lessons into which the First Greek Book is divided the Attic second declension, the systematic treatment of the affinity of words, word lists, word groups, the principles of word formation, and the divi sion of verbs into eight classes, although provision is made for the study of some of these important matters, if the teacher finds the time for it, in the materials furnished in the Appendix. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Greek Book: On the Plan of the First Latin Book It may not be deemed amiss here to say, that the educa tional works of Mr. Arnold require activity and energy on the part of the teacher as well as the scholar. They are not meant to supersede the necessity of a competent and faithful instructor, who can take occasion to enlarge upon, render more full (as boys now and then need), and impress upon his classes, the admirably arranged and clearly and logically drawn out course of instruction contained in these volumes. On the contrary, the teacher must be active and hard-work ing as well as his boys: if he be so, it is really surprising how rapid and yet how solid is their progress if he be not, this as well as every other good school-book will be of com paratively little servme In carrying forward the student to ward the goal of his wishes and his efforts. It ought not to be necessary, in these days, to remind any one that there is no royal road to learning, and that the best of books and best of systems will not make thorough scholars, without good teachers, and studious, hard-working pupils.
