Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Bacteriology for Nurses The present work is the result of a number of years' experience in teaching bacteriology to nurses. A textbook is desirable to supplement and emphasize the material presented in lectures, but the writer has found the text-books examined difficult for beginners who have not had an extended preliminary education. The amount of material presented and the technical terms bewilder and discourage them. In the beginning they should grasp clearly a few general ideas in untechnical language and gradually build on them. It is less important for them to learn disconnected scientific facts than to realize vividly that the connection between the symptoms seen at the bedside and the material shown in the class-room is immediate and vital. An effort has therefore been made to reduce technical terms to a minimum, to include nothing merely for the sake of systematic completeness, and to point out the application of bacteriological principles not only to conditions inside the hospital, but to household life, social movements, and particularly to preventive medicine. This book was released on 2018-03-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Bacteriology and Pathology for Nurses For ages the leper had been considered unclean, and Since the dawn of the world of man had plague infested cities been shunned, and, later, those who were afflicted and their habitations were purified by baths and smudges and noxious fumes. Then an Observing Dutchman of an inventive turn, Leeuwenhoek, of Delft, about the year 1680 produced a lens of such power that this enemy Of man could be seen, though it was not recognized as such at that time. Though Leeuwenhoek certainly discovered the existence Of bacteria and described them, neither he nor any one else succeeded in connecting them with disease for nearly two centuries. So for two hundred years, though its presence was known and its guilt Ofttimes suspected, the disease germ remained unconvicted. Oliver Wendell Holmes, an American physician author, in 1843 suspected the cause Of puerperal fever and wrote on -its contagiousness. In reply to the criticism and invectives which were heaped upon him because he ventured SO new and astonishing an idea in medicine he wrote: It is as a lesson rather than a reproach that I call up the memory Of these irreparable errors and wrongs. Book Synopsis Principles of Bacteriology (Classic Reprint) by : Arthur Alexander Eisenberg
Download or read book Principles of Bacteriology (Classic Reprint) written by Arthur Alexander Eisenberg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Bacteriology We begin to realize that it is while studying bacteriol ogy that the rationale and the principles of bacterial prophylaxis are first brought to the nurse's attention, yet but very little information of this nature is usually given and but very little stress is laid on the connection between bacteriology and prophylaxis; it seemed to me that this would be a very appropriate place and a very opportune time to drive home the lessons, and for this reason, I have introduced in each chapter dealing with individual microorganisms, a section - Mode of Infection, Disinfection and Prophylaxis - as regards the disease caused by particular microorganisms, giv ing explicit instructions as regards the patient and those who mingle with him, including the nurse, the room and its contents. With the present need for more and more nurses, both here and over there, a demand for nurses capa ble of serving as laboratory assistants and technicians will be felt, and for this reason I have gone into the minute description of the simpler technical procedures, giving complete and detailed directions, taking nothing for granted and leaving nothing to one 's imagination. For this reason I have laid much stress on cultural diagnosis giving much prominence to the several culture media used for the differentiation of the various mem bers of the typhoid-colon-dysentery group. In each chap ter a section is provided on Bacteriologic Diagnosis, under which all tests called for in connection with the particular disease are enumerated and complete technic is given, usually describing but one method - the one which has proved most serviceable in my hands. Download or read book Clinical Studies for Nurses written by Charlotte Albina Aikens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Studies for Nurses: A Text-Book for Second and Third Year Pupil Nurses and a Hand-Book for All Who Are Engaged in Caring for the Sick This volume of 'studies has been arranged to follow the lessons on anatomy, physiology, hygiene, bacteriology, materia medica, and dietetics contained in Primary Studies for Nurses. It is taken for granted, also, that before beginning this book the theory and technic of general nursing have been taught in class, at the bedside, and through clinics and demonstrations. The lessons on diseases, general and special, with which this volume mainly deals, should not be attempted till a good foundation has been laid in preparatory studies during the first year. The general plan of the book is much the same as that of the first volume. It is arranged in conformity with the recommendations regarding training-school studies made by the American Hospital Association. For convenience in teaching, reviews, and examinations, a separation of the contents has been made into several sections, it being the author's opinion that better work will be done, with less strain on teacher and pupil, if reviews are held frequently, so as to clinch important principles in the memory, and if examina tions are arranged for every two or three months rather than a number of examinations at the close of the year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Quiz Book of Nursing for Teachers and Students This book aims to be useful, in the most practical way, to nurses who teach, and to those who are study ing under them. It is, in large part, a quiz book, offering in the form of terse question and answer essential information on a wide range of subjects - the information that is essential from the nurse's stand point. Those who teach will find these questions of assistance when the time they have to devote to preparation for their class work is limited; and those who are taking courses will find the book a great help, especially when studying for examinations. There are some one thousand questions on nursing subjects proper, including the general care of the ward; the usual daily care of patients; the significance of the more common symptoms and the special points per taining to them to be noted and recorded; methods of administering medicines; the principles of surgical nursing, of obstetrics, of the care of children, of first aid in emergencies, the duties of head nurses, and of private nurses; and the methods of teaching nursing. There are about fifty question on hygiene, the same on bacteriology, three hundred and fifty on anatomy and physiology, two hundred and fifty on dietetics, and one hundred and fifty on materia medica.
