Book excerpt: The purpose of this phenomenological study will be to describe perceptions of first grade teachers at a north Georgia elementary school regarding a character education program. Although the debate continues as to who should instill our children with values, little documentation exists concerning how educators perceive their role as instructors of character. Many character education programs exist, and many schools have adopted their use. However, school systems are struggling with budget issues, and when deciding where funding may be cut, non-academic programs such as character education are often the first areas terminated. Yet, teachers appear to have little voice in if or how the programs are implemented and/or used in their classrooms. This creates the need of this research. The purpose of the study will be to explore the phenomenon of teacher attitudes and perceptions concerning the instruction of character education using the book entitled The 7 Habits of Happy Kids (2008) by Sean Covey. Research revealing teacher perspectives on teaching character education through the use of this book will provide vital information to curriculum planners struggling with such budgetary issues and decisions.

Book excerpt: Since the time of Aristotle, educators have emphasized character as a necessary part of a student's education, and currently, many states mandate character education by law. Because of this historical and legal emphasis, there is a growing discussion on the necessity of assessments in character education to ensure that character education programs are effective. While there is research on the large-scale effectiveness of programs with different assessments, there is little research about how teachers perceive assessments and measurements in character education. This study was conducted to begin to address this gap in the research. Through the research design of an embedded single case study, the researcher sought to answer the questions of how teachers perceive assessments in character education and how their answers differed when speaking about different grade levels. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews with six different teachers and were analyzed through methods of grounded theory. The findings suggest that teachers believe that measurements for character would be a helpful tool, but they are concerned about the practicality and plausibility of assessments. These findings should encourage researchers, policymakers, and administrators to consider the voices and concerns of teachers while reviewing other research about authentic and effective methods for character education assessment.

Book excerpt: This study explores teachers' understanding of character education, their perceived role in curriculum development, implementation effectiveness, and their teaching practices. This two-part investigation surveys teachers from two schools, followed by an interview process with six of those participants. The school staffs of one elementary school and one elementary-junior-high school were surveyed to provide a general overview of teacher understanding of expectations, their knowledge of character traits identified in the curriculum goals of their Board of Education, and opinions about how their current teaching practice addresses the development of character. The interview data provided indepth information about teacher interpretation of character by their Western Canadian urban Public Board, details about their current teaching practices, including techniques and strategies incorporated, and their feelings about how character education should be taught in the school. The research revealed that teachers were generally unaware of the board's curriculum expectations of the 11 character traits to be taught in school. There were mixed responses about who was responsible for teaching character: Some felt the responsibility was on the parents, while others felt it should be all adults. The study found that teachers were, in fact, currently teaching and assessing students on many of the traits identified as being significant as part of the hidden, lived curriculum.

Book excerpt: While schools are academic institutions to prepare our country's youth for their future, developing a child's character and civic responsibilities is necessary and is often deleted from the explicit curriculum set forth in most school districts throughout the country. This study investigated the perception of character education of teachers in a Central Florida school district, as it related to teacher importance, teacher efficacy, and teacher practice of character education. This study investigated the responses of 497 classroom teachers surveyed within one Central Florida school district. The questionnaire used in this study was designed to illuminate teacher perceptions of character education, by examining a teacher's level of importance, efficacy, and practice of character education in their classrooms and schools. The three areas of importance, efficacy, and practice were examined to determine whether there was a statistically significant difference among Central Florida educators based upon demographic variables of a) grades level taught, b) years of experience, c) highest degree attained, d) gender, and e) National Board Certification. The results of this survey, in combination with existing research findings, proved to be beneficial in revealing the ideals and explicit actions that need to be prevalent in public schools today to insure a balance between academics and the development of civic behaviors and positive character values. This study was a step in a effort to depict the voices of all teachers as stakeholders in one Central Florida School district.

Book excerpt: A study of pre-service teachers' collegiate prepration to address character education in Catholic elementary school was conducted using a qualitative design. Three instruments were utilized in gathering data for this study: (a) the Education Chairperson Interview Questionnaire that provided data about the collegiate perspective in pre-service programs preparing teachers to address character education, (b) the Novice Teacher Survey that gathered data about first-year teachers' perceptions of their collegiate preparation program in both secular and Catholic institutions, and (c) the Novice Teacher Interview Questionnaire whereby data was probed to ascertain the needs first-year teachers had regarding character education teaching in Catholic elementary school. Triangulation yielded data about character education in pre-service teacher programs at secular and Catholic colleges and the self-perceived needs of first-year teachers. An interpretation of the interrelationship among the data provided a perspective on research questions. It appeared that secular and Catholic colleges addressed character education interwoven throughout core courses in teacher preparation programs. First-year teachers perceived a greater need for more direct instruction of character education content and pedagogy at the collegiate level and for ongoing support at the local school level in the first teaching year.

Book excerpt: Character Education in America's Blue Ribbon Schools is based upon descriptive, documentary, and qualitative research conducted on the award winning school applications in the United Stated Department of Education's Elementary School Recognition Program, i.e. the Blue Ribbon Schools. The purpose of the program is to focus national attention on schools that are doing an exceptional job with all of their students. Areas studied are developing a solid foundation of basic skills and knowledge of subject matter and fostering the development of character, values, and ethical judgement. The first edition of this book reported on the first decade of this program, from 1985 to 1994. The second edition adds the schools that have won the award from 1996-2001. Included are the Blue Ribbon schools that applied for Special Honors in Character Education and five that actually won that recognition in 1998-1999. This edition finds character education much stronger in American schools in recent years and is full of many promising practices. It is a practical book that will guide school administrators, teachers, parents, board members, and concerned citizens interested in starting or strengthening the character education focus of their school.

Book excerpt: Research on pre-service teacher training in character education is minimal at best, as is the case with research on best practices in pre-service education in general. What does exist suggests that there is a lack of pre-service training about specific character education strategies. There are few empirical studies investigating the effects of pre-service character education training as it applies to later practice in K-12 school settings. This study explored the perceptions of beginning teachers regarding their past preparation and current implementation of character education. Each participant graduated from a university in a Northwest state that currently implements character education in its pre-service curriculum. The research question was: Does the character education initiative at West University's undergraduate pre-service program have an impact on its teacher education graduates' current classroom practices? From this question four hypotheses were formed: (1) Graduates from West University's pre-service undergraduate program perceive their pre-service character education as being effective for them as character educators; (2) Graduates from West University's pre-service program feel competent to implement character education; (3) Graduates from West University's pre-service program report using effective character education strategies in their current classrooms; and (4) Graduates from West University's pre-service program perceive that they are effectively impacting their students' character, citizenship and critical thinking skills. A mixed-methods design was employed starting with quantitative analysis of a survey that was distributed to teachers in their first five years of teaching after having graduated from the targeted university with a total of 31 respondents. The researcher then interviewed eight survey participants. The study revealed a mixed picture regarding the subjects' sense of preparedness to implement character education. Quantitative data suggested that subjects felt competent to implement character education, as manifested in positive scores on the Character Education Efficacy Belief Instrument, but the qualitative data revealed the opposite. There was also a mixed picture of the use of character education strategies within their classrooms, with subjects reporting usage of some strategies but in a non-directive approach. The subjects also felt that they were affecting their students' character, citizenship, and critical thinking skills but with limitations.
