Download or read book Face Value written by Alexander Todorov and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific story of first impressions—and why the snap character judgments we make from faces are irresistible but usually incorrect We make up our minds about others after seeing their faces for a fraction of a second—and these snap judgments predict all kinds of important decisions. For example, politicians who simply look more competent are more likely to win elections. Yet the character judgments we make from faces are as inaccurate as they are irresistible; in most situations, we would guess more accurately if we ignored faces. So why do we put so much stock in these widely shared impressions? What is their purpose if they are completely unreliable? In this book, Alexander Todorov, one of the world's leading researchers on the subject, answers these questions as he tells the story of the modern science of first impressions. Drawing on psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, computer science, and other fields, this accessible and richly illustrated book describes cutting-edge research and puts it in the context of the history of efforts to read personality from faces. Todorov describes how we have evolved the ability to read basic social signals and momentary emotional states from faces, using a network of brain regions dedicated to the processing of faces. Yet contrary to the nineteenth-century pseudoscience of physiognomy and even some of today's psychologists, faces don't provide us a map to the personalities of others. Rather, the impressions we draw from faces reveal a map of our own biases and stereotypes. A fascinating scientific account of first impressions, Face Value explains why we pay so much attention to faces, why they lead us astray, and what our judgments actually tell us.

Book Synopsis Intertemporal Choice and Its Anomalies by : Salvador Cruz Rambaud
Download or read book Intertemporal Choice and Its Anomalies written by Salvador Cruz Rambaud and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Topic of the journals Frontiers in Applied Mathematics and Statistics and Frontiers in Psychology on “Intertemporal choice and its anomalies” has collected ten manuscripts on several fields, which demonstrates that this topic is of interest for many important research activities outside of traditional domains of economics and finance. In effect, the concepts of time preference, rationality and time-inconsistency in intertemporal choice can be applied to a wide variety of social problems such as addictions, retirement plans, and health, among others. On the other hand, the main anomalies or paradoxes in intertemporal choice (such as delay effect, sign effect, magnitude effect, delay-speedup asymmetry, and sequence effect) have been considered, as manifestations of many problematic behaviors of self-control in intertemporal choice.
Book Synopsis Ecclesial Futures: Volume 1, Issue 2 by : Nigel Rooms
Download or read book Ecclesial Futures: Volume 1, Issue 2 written by Nigel Rooms and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-12-24 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecclesial Futures publishes original research and theological reflection on the development and transformation of local Christian communities and the systems that support them as they join in the mission of God in the world. We understand local Christian communities broadly to include traditional “parish” churches and independent local churches, religious communities and congregations, new church plants, so-called “fresh expressions” of church, “emergent” churches, and “new monastic” communities. We are an international and ecumenical journal with an interdisciplinary understanding of our approach to theological research and reflection; the core disciplines being theology, missiology, and ecclesiology. Other social science and theological disciplines may be helpful in supporting the holistic nature of any research, e.g., anthropology and ethnography, sociology, statistical research, biblical studies, leadership studies, and adult learning. The journal fills an important reflective space between the academy and on-the-ground practice within the field of mission studies, ecclesiology, and the so-called “missional church.” This opportunity for engagement has emerged in the last twenty or so years from a turn to the local (and the local church) and, in the western world at least, from the demise of Christendom and a rapidly changing world—which also affects the church globally. The audience for the journal is truly global wherever the local church and the systems that support them exists. We expect to generate interest from readers in church judicatory bodies, theological seminaries, university theology departments, and in local churches from all God’s people and the leaders amongst them.
Book Synopsis Locative Expressions in English and French by : Mark Tutton
Download or read book Locative Expressions in English and French written by Mark Tutton and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expressing location is one of the most common linguistic tasks that we perform in our daily lives. This book provides the first comprehensive analysis into how speakers of English and French use gesture as well as speech when describing where objects are located. It shows that spoken locative expressions are made up of both speech and gesture components, and that the two modalities contribute in a complementary fashion to convey locative meaning.
Book Synopsis Empiricism and the Foundations of Psychology by : John-Michael Kuczynski
Download or read book Empiricism and the Foundations of Psychology written by John-Michael Kuczynski and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for philosophically minded psychologists and psychologically minded philosophers, this book identifies the ways that psychology has hobbled itself by adhering too strictly to empiricism, this being the doctrine that all knowledge is observation-based. In the first part of this two-part work, we show that empiricism is false. In the second part, we identify the psychology-relevant consequences of this fact. Five of these are of special importance: (i) Whereas some psychopathologies (e.g. obsessive-compulsive disorder) corrupt the activity mediated by one's psychological architecture, others (e.g. sociopathy) corrupt that architecture itself. (ii) The basic tenets of psychoanalysis are coherent. (iii) All propositional attitudes are beliefs. (iv) Selves are minds that self-evaluate. And: (v) It is by giving our thoughts a perceptible form that we enable ourselves to evaluate them, and it is by expressing ourselves in language and art that we give our thoughts a perceptible form. (Series A)
Book Synopsis Prosdocimo de' Beldomandi's Musica Plana and Musica Speculativa by : Prosdocimo de' Beldomandi
Download or read book Prosdocimo de' Beldomandi's Musica Plana and Musica Speculativa written by Prosdocimo de' Beldomandi and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2024-05-13 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available in English for the first time, Prosdocimo's Tractatus plane musice (1412) and Tractatus musice speculative (1425) are exemplary texts for understanding the high sophistication of music theory in the early fifteenth century. Known for considering music as a science based on demonstrable mathematical principles, Prosdocimo praises Marchetto for his theory of plainchant but criticizes his influential Lucidarium for its heterodox mathematics. In dismissing Marchetto as a “mere performer,” Prosdocimo takes up matters as broad as the nature and definition of music and as precise as counterpoint, tuning, and ecclesiastical modes. The treatises also reveal much about Prosdocimo’s understanding of plainchant; his work with Euclid's Elementa; and his familiarity with the music theory of Boethius, Macrobius, and Johannes de Muris. A foremost authority on Italian music theory of the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, Jan Herlinger consults manuscripts from Bologna, Cremona, and Lucca in preparing these valuable first critical editions.

Book Synopsis Generalizations of Thomae's Formula for Zn Curves by : Hershel M. Farkas
Download or read book Generalizations of Thomae's Formula for Zn Curves written by Hershel M. Farkas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous publications on the generalization of the Thomae formulae to Zn curves have emphasized the theory's implications in mathematical physics and depended heavily on applied mathematical techniques. This book redevelops these previous results demonstrating how they can be derived directly from the basic properties of theta functions as functions on compact Riemann surfaces. "Generalizations of Thomae's Formula for Zn Curves" includes several refocused proofs developed in a generalized context that is more accessible to researchers in related mathematical fields such as algebraic geometry, complex analysis, and number theory. This book is intended for mathematicians with an interest in complex analysis, algebraic geometry or number theory as well as physicists studying conformal field theory.

He claims that intuition and expression are the same, with beauty being a successful expression, and unsuccessful expression not considered an expression at all. The second part of the book explores the history of aesthetics, citing references from Greek to Post-Kantians and German Idealists, and providing ingenious commentary. Croce also delves into language, discussing the individuality of speech, roots, and the relationship between grammar and logic. This insightful book offers a comprehensive understanding of Aesthetics and language, making it a must-read for those interested in these subjects.
