Book excerpt: This book strives to unmask the racial inequity at the root of the emergence of modern physical culture systems in the US Progressive Era (1890s–1920s). This book focuses on physical culture – systematic, non-competitive exercise performed under the direction of an expert – because tracing how people practiced physical culture in the Progressive Era, especially middle- and upper-class white women, reveals how modes of popular performance, institutional regulation, and ideologies of individualism and motherhood combined to sublimate whiteness beneath the veneer of liberal progressivism and reform. The sites in this book give the fullest picture of the different strata of physical culture for white women during that time and demonstrate the unracialization of whiteness through physical culture practices. By illuminating the ways in which whiteness in the US became a default identity category absorbed into the “universal” ideals of culture, arts, and sciences, the author shows how physical culture circulated as a popular performance form with its own conventions, audience, and promised profitability. Finally, the chapters reveal troubling connections between the daily habits physical culturists promoted and the eugenics movement’s drive towards more reproductively efficient white bodies. By examining these written, visual, and embodied texts, the author insists on a closer scrutiny of the implicit whiteness of physical culture and forwards it as a crucial site of analysis for performance scholars interested in how corporeality is marshaled by and able to contest local and global systems of power.

Book excerpt: Diana’s Fitness, Fashion & Beauty is one of 4 volumes in the Sports She Wrote series written by the first woman with her own weekly sports column in a major American newspaper, The Philadelphia Inquirer, from 1898 to 1901. Her real name (which she never revealed in print) was Mary Lagen, a prolific writer and bicycling pioneer, who inaugurated her “Athletic Woman” column at the age of 46. Diana was a strong proponent of physical fitness and athletics for women. She advocated exercise and good health as foundational aspects of well-rounded womanhood and lifelong happiness, as well as fundamental aspects of female beauty. Her devotion to fashion, diet, beauty and health endured for years beyond her “Athletic Woman” column, as she later became one of the first women editors of the “Woman’s Page” in a major American newspaper. This volume features 213 articles (120,000 words) presented in the following categories: fitness & athletics (60), fencing (12), boxing (5), dance (5), fashion (91), and beauty (40). Diana is an engaging writer with a keen observational eye and clever wordplay. The other three volumes presenting Diana's column are Diana's Ball Sports, Diana's Outdoor Sports, and Diana's Anecdotes & Aphorisms. Additional articles on fitness, fashion and beauty are included in the following volumes of the Sports She Wrote series: Physical Fitness, Health, & Beauty; Physical Education & Culture; 7 Exercise Manuals; What to Wear; and Adelia Brainerd, The Outdoor Woman of Harper’s Bazar. Sports She Wrote is a 31-volume time-capsule of primary documents written by more than 500 women in the 19th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engaging a medley of perspectives and methodologies, The Sporting World of the Modern South examines how sports map the social, political, and cultural landscapes of the modern South. In essays on the "backcountry" fighter stereotypes portrayed in modern professional wrestling and the significance of Crimson Tide coaching legend Paul "Bear" Bryant for white Alabamians, contributors explore the symbols that have shaped southern regional identities since the Civil War. Other essays tackle gender and race relations in intercollegiate athletics, uncover the roles athletic competitions played in desegregating the South, and address the popularity of NASCAR in the southern states. Pairing the action and anecdotes of good sports writing with rock-solid scholarship, The Sporting World of the Modern South adds historical and anthropological perspectives to legends and lore from the gridiron to the racetrack. This collection, with its innovative attention to the interplay between athletics and regional identity, is an insightful and compelling contribution to southern and sports history.
