Book Synopsis Disarming Hitlers V Weapons by : Chris Ransted
Download or read book Disarming Hitlers V Weapons written by Chris Ransted and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2013-09-19 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An account of the “brave men of the bomb disposal units who died disarming the weapons that Hitler hoped would save the Nazis from defeat” (Dover Express/Folkestone Herald). In 1944 the V-1s and V-2s, Hitler’s “vengeance” weapons, were regarded by the Allied leaders in London as the single greatest threat they had faced. It was feared that these flying bombs and rockets might turn the tide of war once again in Germany’s favor. Yet, little more than half of these missiles hit their targets, some failing to explode. Their wreckage lay across the southern half of England or in Europe, with contents liable to sudden and deadly ignition. It was the job of specialist Bomb Disposal teams to render the V-weapons safe and uncover their secrets. This is their story. In this unique book Chris Ransted has investigated the work of these unsung heroes who risked their lives every time they were called into action and, in the course of his research he has located the sites of many of the unexploded V-weapons, revealed here for the first time. Ransted also details the methods used by the Bomb Disposal men and the equipment they used. The book is richly illustrated with 266 photographs and diagrams, many of which have never previously been published. In completing this, the most comprehensive study of its kind, the author describes the deeds of those gallant Bomb Disposal men that were awarded one of the highest honors which could have been bestowed upon them by their country—the George Medal. “A particularly thorough and enlightening book.”—Military Vehicle Trust

Book excerpt: "London and southern England has for weeks now been the target of our V1, which is only the first link in a chain of new and strongest German weapons." So wrote the editor of Der Adler, the "house" magazine of the Luftwaffe, in August 1944. The first of the German V-weapons had crashed on English soil two months before in the early hours of June 13, and for the next ten months Britain was subjected to a relentless bombardment from Hitler’s Vergeltungswaffen or "revenge weapons". Beginning with the V1 flying bombs, colloquially dubbed in Britain as "doodlebugs," thousands of which had to be fired from fixed sites in northern France, the V2 rocket had the advantage of being mounted on a mobile trailer so it could be launched from any level piece of ground. The first pair of over a thousand rockets, fired from a street corner in Holland, arrived like a double thunderclap on the evening of September 8. Heralding a new form of warfare in which there was no warning and no defense, nevertheless huge efforts had been made by the Royal Air Force and US?Army Air Forces to blunt the threat of the new supersonic weapon. Based on a formerly classified RAF narrative, this book covers the detailed story, from the very first intelligence reports in 1943, through the various counter-measures carried out, both to mitigate manufacturing and destroy suspected V-weapon construction sites. Day-by-day listings are included covering the locations in Britain where every V1 was either destroyed or where they impacted, plus those for all the V2s. Illustrated with many censored photographs from the period, "then and now" comparisons bring history alive to illustrate the passage of time over the intervening years.

Book Synopsis Fast And Furious: A Comprehensive Collection Of U.S. Government Documents To 2017 by :
Download or read book Fast And Furious: A Comprehensive Collection Of U.S. Government Documents To 2017 written by and published by Jeffrey Frank Jones. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 26260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 26,000 total pages .... Background: The Fast and Furious operation was responsible for allowing approximately 2,000 firearms to illegally flow into the hands of criminals, including Mexican drug cartel associates. On December 14, 2010, Customs and Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, a United States Marine, was killed while on patrol just miles from the Mexican border. The firearms found at the scene were semi-automatic rifles that were allowed to walk as part of Operation Fast and Furious. Congressional Republicans have investigated Fast and Furious since January 2011. Over the course of the investigation, the Justice Department has provided false information, stonewalled document requests, produced scores of blacked-out pages and duplicate documents, and refused to comply with two congressional subpoenas. In August 2012, the U.S. House of Representatives Office of General Counsel filed suit against the Justice Department. On January 19, 2016, United States District Judge Amy Berman Jackson issued her opinion and ordered DOJ release documents previously withheld under the President’s executive privilege claim. On April 8, 2016, DOJ complied with the Judge’s order, delivering more than 20,500 pages of documents to the Committee. CONTENTS: Statement of Michael E.
