Book excerpt: Using real-world data case studies, this innovative and accessible textbook introduces an actionable framework for conducting trustworthy data science. Most textbooks present data science as a linear analytic process involving a set of statistical and computational techniques without accounting for the challenges intrinsic to real-world applications. Veridical Data Science, by contrast, embraces the reality that most projects begin with an ambiguous domain question and messy data; it acknowledges that datasets are mere approximations of reality while analyses are mental constructs. Bin Yu and Rebecca Barter employ the innovative Predictability, Computability, and Stability (PCS) framework to assess the trustworthiness and relevance of data-driven results relative to three sources of uncertainty that arise throughout the data science life cycle: the human decisions and judgment calls made during data collection, cleaning, and modeling. By providing real-world data case studies, intuitive explanations of common statistical and machine learning techniques, and supplementary R and Python code, Veridical Data Science offers a clear and actionable guide for conducting responsible data science. Requiring little background knowledge, this lucid, self-contained textbook provides a solid foundation and principled framework for future study of advanced methods in machine learning, statistics, and data science. Presents the Predictability, Computability, and Stability (PCS) methodology for producing trustworthy data-driven results Teaches how a data science project should be conducted from beginning to end, including extensive discussion of the data scientist's decision-making process Cultivates critical thinking throughout the entire data science life cycle Provides practical examples and illuminating case studies of real-world data analysis problems with associated code, exercises, and solutions Suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, domain scientists, and practitioners

Book excerpt: “Many sales processes don’t work anymore––period. But companies don’t know exactly what’s not working, or why, or what needs fixing. What’s worse, many companies are in denial that their processes are broken and will not support what they need to do going forward.” Today it's tougher than ever for sales, marketing, and business development organizations to keep improving their revenue and profits. Potential clients want to see salespeople less and less, real decision makers hide behind skilled gatekeepers, and even when you actually reach them, they have impossibly short attention spans. Sales and closing cycles get longer, margins get thinner, and customers keep raising the bar – demanding more value, cheaper prices, and better service. Michael Boylan's Accelerants offers a powerful solution to these impediments to growth. Giving business leaders the tools to diagnose what is hindering revenue growth, Boylan first identifies twelve constraints that apply consistent downward pressure on companies, making them less efficient, effective, and profitable. He then prescribes the Accelerant Principles—twelve field-proven tools Boylan has perfected over twenty years that can help any organization overcome, minimize, or dissolve the constraints to business growth. Together, the Accelerant principles offer a cohesive framework that can help any business: target new revenue opportunities more effectively connect with the real decision makers faster craft more persuasive value propositions deliver better pitches, in less time weed out prospects who are "just kicking the tires" shorten closing cycles by up to 25 percent You’ll read how a magazine start-up used the Accelerant Principles to create such a compelling value proposition that advertisers were competing with each other to participate. And how a large multinational technology firm employed these techniques to meet with top executives from day one and close unprecedented deals faster than they thought possible. With ideas that are relevant, timely, and applicable, Accelerants provides a program that will foster empowerment, cohesion, and clarity of purpose within any sales, marketing, or business development organization.

Internet technologies have enabled anyone to tell their story—and to find out their own unknown story. Libraries are seeing increased interest in community and family history and in genealogy, as well as heightened demand for access to personal and community history materials in digital format. The opportunity exists for libraries to benefit their communities by providing these in-demand, digitized historical materials optimized for researchers at the individual level. Digitizing Your Community's History: The Innovative Librarian's Guide provides you with step-by-step directions for launching a DIY digitization program for personal and community historical materials. It covers the process of setting up a digitization program, training customers to use the equipment, best practices for storing digitized material, and tips for engaging the community in local history, such as ideas for exhibiting materials and programs for genealogy and family history. Just as importantly, the author addresses how to explain the benefits of programs like these to library stakeholders and supplies recommendations on sustaining library community history programs through access and engagement. Book excerpt: The challenge for me in writing this book was to blend factual incidents with fictional characters and events in a way that would be entertaining as well as educational for the readers-- regardless of their background and experience. Although the active characters and events described in this novel are fictional, they are based upon real incidents and real people. The depiction of their ancestors is factual and taken from history, news articles and internet interviews. After the book was written-- in a surprisingly short time-- I found some errors in the information I had received. It took weeks of travel and many interviews in British Columbia, the Yukon Territory, Alberta and Alaska to sort out the truth. Interviews with geologists, archeologists, historians, pilots, and airplane mechanics were all necessary to authenticate some of the scenes in this book. The places depicted actually exist-- I have been there. In a few cases the names have been changed to protect the owners of various facilities. The Characters-- both human and animal-- and the actions depicted in this novel are based upon real life incidents. Humans are a very complex species and how they act in private may be entirely different from the image they present in public. It has been said that we all have demons inside that we must deal with. I have attempted to expose some of the demons inside the principal characters and to show how they coped-- or in some cases could not cope with them. To a certain extent this book is a survival guide. It pits man against man, emotion against emotion, man against animal, and man against nature in all its fury. Most of all, it is a book about being PURSUED. Man is PURSUED by man, man is PURSUED by animal, man is PURSUED by nature and the elements, and man is PURSUED by himself-- and the demons within him. A complex series of events brought the passengers together on this doomed flight into the Arctic winter night. You will get to know each intimently by the end of the book. How was the pilot able to find a place to land in the ice and snow? How did they survive that 40 degree below zero weather? What did they do when they found 60 million dollars in Mafia money hidden in the plane? How did they get back to civilizaiton? You will find out when you read this book.
