Book excerpt: "Counseling Unmarried Couples will give you the tools you need to serve the legal needs of this growing segment of society. It's not just about knowing the legal rules and writing competent agreements; as a lawyer working for unmarried couples, you will need to know how to integrate and interpret the legal rules for your clients in a realistic, comprehensible, and meaningful manner. Only by doing so can you effectively guide your clients, straight and gay, in making wise decision about their homes, their children, and their assets. The fourteen chapters discuss everything that an unmarried couple is likely to encounter, including: living apart, living together, and the option of marriage; financial assets, debts, and insurance; tax consequences, liabilities, and benefits; real estate ownership and management; cohabitation and financial agreements; the rules and practices of parentage; illness and disability planning; estate planning concerns and practices; breaking up: substantive doctrines and procedural tasks. The second edition also features completely new and updated sections covering federal recognition of same-sex marriage, the DOMA ruling, and California's Proposition 8, as well as an entirely revised state law chart. Included is a CD-ROM containing all the documents you'll need to represent these couples, from co-ownership agreements to co-parenting adoptions to sample wills"--Unedited summary from book cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book focuses on theoretical and empirical intersections between governance, knowledge and space from an interdisciplinary perspective. The contributions elucidate how knowledge is a prerequisite as well as a driver of governance efficacy, and conversely, how governance affects the creation and use of knowledge and innovation in geographical context. Scholars from the fields of anthropology, economics, geography, public administration, political science, sociology, and organization studies provide original theoretical discussions along these interdependencies. Moreover, a variety of empirical chapters on governance issues, ranging from regional and national to global scales and covering case studies in Australia, Europe, Latina America, North America and South Africa demonstrate that geography and space are not only important contexts for governance that affect the contingent outcomes of governance blueprints. Governance also creates spaces. It affects the geographical confines as well as the quality of opportunities and constraints that actors enjoy to establish legitimate and sustainable ways of social and environmental co-existence.

Book excerpt: During the period of America's swiftest industrialization and urban growth, fire struck fear in the hearts of city dwellers as did no other calamity. Before the Civil War, sweeping blazes destroyed more than $200 million in property in the nation's largest cities. Between 1871 and 1906, conflagrations left Chicago, Boston, Baltimore, and San Francisco in ruins. Into the twentieth century, this dynamic hazard intensified as cities grew taller and more populous, confounding those who battled it. Firefighters' death-defying feats captured the popular imagination but too often failed to provide more than symbolic protection. Hundreds of fire insurance companies went bankrupt because they could not adequately deal with the effects of even smaller blazes. Firefighters and fire insurers created a physical and cultural infrastructure whose legacy—in the form of heroic firefighters, insurance policies, building standards, and fire hydrants—lives on in the urban built environment. In Eating Smoke, Mark Tebeau shows how the changing practices of firefighters and fire insurers shaped the built landscape of American cities, the growth of municipal institutions, and the experience of urban life. Drawing on a wealth of fire department and insurance company archives, he contrasts the invention of a heroic culture of firefighters with the rational organizational strategies by fire underwriters. Recognizing the complexity of shifting urban environments and constantly experimenting with tools and tactics, firefighters fought fire ever more aggressively—"eating smoke" when they ventured deep into burning buildings or when they scaled ladders to perform harrowing rescues. In sharp contrast to the manly valor of firefighters, insurers argued that the risk was quantifiable, measurable, and predictable. Underwriters managed hazard with statistics, maps, and trade associations, and they eventually agitated for building codes and other reforms, which cities throughout the nation implemented in the twentieth century. Although they remained icons of heroism, firefighters' cultural and institutional authority slowly diminished. Americans had begun to imagine fire risk as an economic abstraction. By comparing the simple skills employed by firefighters—climbing ladders and manipulating hoses—with the mundane technologies—maps and accounting charts—of insurers, the author demonstrates that the daily routines of both groups were instrumental in making intense urban and industrial expansion a less precarious endeavor.

Book excerpt: "Edwin Perkins's examination of the development of financial services in North America is the first study to focus on the colonial, confederation, and early national eras, highlighting both the continuities of the colonial past and the sweeping institutional innovations after American independence." "Perkins analyzes virtually every major financial service - the issuance of paper monies, the rise of capital markets to support the trading of stocks and bonds, the emergence of insurance underwriters to cover fire damage on domestic structures and marine losses, and other related activities. He also examines the major political controversies surrounding the American financial system, including the contest between Hamiltonians and Jeffersonians. Perkins argues that the financial services sector was quite sophisticated well before the revolutionary advances in transportation and industry that occurred between the War of 1812 and the Civil War. Moreover, he contends that the maturation of the financial services sector came early, laying a solid base for advancement in other economic sectors after 1815." "An essential work for business and economic historians, as well as specialists in the colonial and early national eras, American Public Finance and Financial Services will enlighten all those interested in better understanding the development of the American economy."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
