But they hadn’t mentioned anything about strange dolphins.’ Ten-year-old Ayesha has everything an adventurer needs—courage, cleverness, creativity, and a complete lack of caution. But even Ayesha has to admit that the mission Shekina (the Queen of the Seas, no less) has charged her with may be slightly out of her league. After all, it does involve saving the world. Of course. And it’s not like she has a fire-breathing dragon or a super-smart android as a sidekick. Try a snarky surfboarding snail instead. Join Ayesha as she jumps headlong into an extra-extraordinary adventure that takes her halfway across the world (and a little beyond).

Download or read book Cinderella written by Anonymous and published by Sheba Blake Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cinderella is a folk tale embodying a myth-element of unjust oppression/triumphant reward. Thousands of variants are known throughout the world. The title character is a young woman living in unfortunate circumstances, that are suddenly changed to remarkable fortune. The oldest documented version comes from China, and the oldest European version from Italy. The most popular version was first published by Charles Perrault in Histoires ou contes du temps passé in 1697, and later by the Brothers Grimm in their folk tale collection Grimms' Fairy Tales. Although the story's title and main character's name change in different languages, in English-language folklore "Cinderella" is the archetypal name. The word "Cinderella" has, by analogy, come to mean one whose attributes were unrecognized, or one who unexpectedly achieves recognition or success after a period of obscurity and neglect. The still-popular story of "Cinderella" continues to influence popular culture internationally, lending plot elements, allusions, and tropes to a wide variety of media. The Aarne–Thompson system classifies Cinderella as "the persecuted heroine". The story of Rhodopis, about a Greek slave girl who marries the king of Egypt, is considered the earliest known variant of the "Cinderella" story (published 7 BC), and many variants are known throughout the world.

Download or read book The Kalevala written by Elias Lönnrot and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-04-27 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kalevala is a Finnish epic poem, which tells of the creation of the world and how the heroes that inhabit it came to be, and the legends of their conflicts and adventures. Spread out over fifty cantos, we hear how existence was created from the egg of a duck, how the forests were created from the chips of a world-tree felled by an ancient wizard, how the mighty Sampo—a multicolored mill of plenty—was created and later stolen, how the nine dread diseases came to be, and many more such stories. The tales contained here are formed from Finland’s oral history. The author, Elias Lönnrot, was a Finnish doctor who was fascinated with his country’s stories, so between the 1820s and 1850s he embarked on a series of expeditions to the countryside of Finland and the surrounding area to collect and transcribe the folk stories told by local people. These tales were gradually collected into several volumes, the final of which is this “new” Kalevala. Lönnrot collected many different variants of each story, then edited each down into a cohesive whole when composing the new verse. The distinctive Kalevala-meter that was a common feature of all the original oral stories was kept during the process, and Crawford used the same with this English translation. Lönnrot’s work proved extremely influential in Finland, and the national pride it imbued has been cited as a factor in the later Finnish independence movement. The Kalevala was also a source of inspiration for later authors of the twentieth century. Tolkien reused some of the themes and characters for the basis of his fictional universe (in particular The Silmarillion), the Kalevala-meter was used in Longfellow’s The Song of Hiawatha, and even Donald Duck has quested—as the Kalevala heroes did—for the legendary Sampo. This edition was translated by John Martin Crawford in the late nineteenth century, and includes his introduction discussing some of the themes, characters, and settings.
Book Synopsis FINNISH LEGENDS for ENGLISH CHILDREN - 38 Finnish Children's Stories by : Anon E. Mouse
Download or read book FINNISH LEGENDS for ENGLISH CHILDREN - 38 Finnish Children's Stories written by Anon E. Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE following 38 Finnish children’s stories cover almost all of the songs and runes contained in the Kalevala, the epic of the Finnish people in a simpler, story form. These stories will lead English speaking children into an hitherto unexplored region of the fairy world, for the folklore of Finland is the least known in the West. In these 38 stories T. M. Crawford's metrical translation of the Kalevala has been closely followed. As an introduction the first story in the volume is "Father Mikko" who has been chosen as the story-teller. Thereafter you will find stories like “Illmarinen Forges the Sampo”, a classic Finnish tale, an illustration of which has been selected for the cover. Young readers will also find the stories of “The Isle of Refuge”, “Wainamoinen And Youkahainen”, “Aino's Fate”, “Wainamoinen's Search For Aino”, “The Rainbow-Maiden”, “Ilmarinen's Bride Of Gold”and many more. While some of the characters' names will, at first, be unfamiliar, but by the end of the book they will be as familiar as friends. If this volume may in any degree awake some interest in the Finnish people, the storyteller would be amply satisfied, for his objective will have been attained.
