Book excerpt: Incidents involving rescue from road vehicles are dramatically increasing in frequency. There are some 3500 deaths on the road each year, with 35,000 serious injuries. Modern motor vehicles are becoming safer for occupants, due to advancement in technology, so persons are more likely to survive high impact speeds, but are also more likely to become entrapped. The Fire and Rescue Service, as the primary rescue service, requires national guidance to ensure a similar standard of response anywhere in the UK. This manual is designed to highlight current best practice with regard to vehicle rescue techniques and first responder trauma care. Each chapter forms an independent reference source, but the publication as a whole forms a complete guide. Chapters cover: vehicle design and construction; dealing with incidents; safety procedures; operational procedures; extrication equipment; medical considerations and trauma care; Integrated Personal Development System (I.P.D.S.). Appendices cover: Highways Agency/Fire and Rescue Service memorandum of understanding; training and general information; and emergency services personnel (ESP) aide mâmoire. The CD-ROM, "Vehicle extrication techniques", is a multi media guide to rescue tool handling and extrication techniques.

Book excerpt: Training for firefighters must be planned so that they experience reasonably realistic situations in which they encounter the hazards likely to be met in operational incidents, whilst the risk of resultant injury is controlled and all unnecessary risks avoided. One hazard is that of high environmental temperature, which can present an acute risk of burn injury (eg through contact with hot debris) and a less acute risk of physiological heat stress; it is this latter risk which is addressed in this document. The guidance is based on a study of environmental temperatures during training sessions, together with the resultant body temperatures of those taking part. Measures outlined include: pre-exposure procedures; monitoring and control procedures during training; post-exposure control. An appendix describes the effects of heat on the body and heat-related disorders.

The manual also provides a reference for instructors who may perform duties outside of their current certification levels. This new edition has been reorganized to provide clearer separations between the three instructor levels: Ch. 1-9 cover Level I; Ch. 10-14, Level II; and Ch. 15-17 Level III. The text has been shortened from 22 chapters to 17. As a result, the text is more concise and easier to teach. The text reflects new changes in the NFPA(R) standard, including a discussion of bias in instructional and testing materials.

Book excerpt: This new IFSTA manual details the training required of Company Officers according to NFPA® 1021, Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications, 2014 Edition. The manual is divided into two sections to make a clear distinction between the information needed for Fire Officer Level I and Fire Officer Level II. Both print and eBook formats are available. There is no shortage of issues that a company officer might face in the everyday operation of a fire company or unit. This manual addresses the wide range of topics and issues encountered by a company officer, from leadership and supervision to health and safety issues. Great attention was given to focus on the job performance requirements of NFPA® 1021. The fifth edition of Fire and Emergency Services Company Officer builds on the previous edition of the manual while presenting the material in a more concise manner to make it easier for students to read and instructors to teach. By merging related topics, the number of chapters was reduced from 32 in the fourth edition to 17 in the new manual while preserving the material related to the NFPA® standard. The number of appendices was reduced from 20 to 4 by removing information that can be found in other media. Along with reducing the volume of material from the fourth edition, the fifth edition of Fire and Emergency Services Company Officer offers several new features. The manual features a new look with IFSTA’s single-column format and upgraded and updated curriculum components. Learning activities are included to help instructors present the material to their students. Case Histories open each chapter to illustrate important lessons learned in the real world. Photographs, illustrations, and tables are included throughout the manual to illustrate key points and improve the overall instructional value of the material.

For those firefighters and company officers assigned to a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT), not making the correct split-second decisions--such as immediately recognizing changes in fire behavior or failing to evaluate their level of SCBA air--can result in the loss of the lives of the entire team. In an effort to reduce the number of line-of-duty firefighting injuries and deaths, while at the same time being proactive in the fire service training and leadership, authors Richard Kolomay and Robert Hoff have drawn upon their combined 50+ years of firefighting experience to put together this comprehensive guide. Key Features & Benefits - Provides an awareness of firefighter safety and proactive fire service training - Describes various types of serious firefighter injuries and fatality incidents during emergency incident operations - Details recommended Rapid Intervention Team operating methods and procedures, as well as how to activate a Rapid Intervention Team

This new and updated edition of 'Incident Command: Fire and Rescue Service Manual - Volume 2: Fire Service Operations' develops the subject, particularly in the area of dynamic risk assessment and command competence. This guide details the doctrine of the Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) in the context of operational incident management, leadership, and the functional command and control processes that flow from it. This new edition of the manual also reflects the need for Fire and Rescue Services to be able to work effectively within a broader multi-agency incident management framework. Further to recent legislation this publication offers guidance in respect to the increasingly broad role of Fire and Rescue Services in incidents other than fire. This role is then considered in relation to the capacities, objectives, and constraints of other responding agencies.Essential reading for Fire Brigade Service managers and those involved in incident response across all of the emergency services.
