Book Synopsis The Philosophy of Taxation and Public Finance by : Robert W. McGee
Download or read book The Philosophy of Taxation and Public Finance written by Robert W. McGee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most public finance books are texts, which are aimed at undergraduate or graduate students. They are overly technical in nature and appeal only to a narrow range of bureaucrats and academics. Books on taxation are written for tax practitioners and usually emphasize either what the law is or how to maneuver through the labyrinth of tax law to minimize taxes for clients. Philosophy books on taxation or public finance simply do not exist. The Philosophy of Taxation and Public Finance is different. It is written in nontechnical language and is aimed to appeal to a wide range of readers, including practitioners, academics and students in the fields of taxation, public finance, economics, law, philosophy and political science as well as general readers who are interested in learning why they are being taxed the way they are. The author addresses the major issues and topics in taxation and public finance and injects them with philosophical insights. He discusses questions such as: -What arguments have been used to justify taxation? -When is tax evasion unethical? -Are some taxes better than others? -What are the proper functions of government? -How much is enough? Is the ability to pay concept valid? -When can punitive taxes be justified?

Book Synopsis Equality of Opportunity by : Jonathan M. Young
Download or read book Equality of Opportunity written by Jonathan M. Young and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper the author offers a reprint of "Equality of Opportunity: The Making of the Americans with Disabilities Act" (July 26, 1997). This personal story is part and parcel of the ADA's (Americans with Disabilities Act) significance in the society. The ADA is a nondiscrimination law. It is a clarion call for transforming attitudes about disability. The ADA proclaims that all people, including people with disabilities, should participate fully in all aspects of communities and have opportunities to take risks, to succeed, and--yes--to fail. Equality of opportunity means having a chance to live independently and become financially secure, but it is not a guarantee. Understanding the history of the ADA is every bit as important as when "Equality of Opportunity" was first published in 1997. Arguably, the urgency is even greater now. Achieving equality of opportunity for people with disabilities depends in large measure on individual transformative experiences like the one the author had through writing the history of the ADA. Thus, the author hopes that this reprint of "Equality of Opportunity" enables more people to understand the ADA and the outmoded structural and attitudinal barriers it was meant to tear down. A glossary of included. List of Interviews is appended. (Contain 443 notes.).

Book Synopsis Civil Justice System Competition in the European Union by : Erlis Themeli
Download or read book Civil Justice System Competition in the European Union written by Erlis Themeli and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some years now, certain EU Member States have been promoting their national courts as the best places to litigate cross-border commercial disputes. This has led to a competition between jurisdictions, which recently has been re-energised by the upcoming withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU. This civil justice competition affects, among other things, governments' policies, court organisation, and cross-border litigation strategies. Building on an interdisciplinary methodology, this book offers an in-depth theoretical and empirical research analysing the competition currently taking place between civil justice systems. It focuses in particular on the motivations and attitudes of governments and litigants, and presents the findings of a survey conducted with lawyers from the largest law firms in Europe. Contributing to the current debates in a novel way, this research will be a go-to-point for academics, policymakers and practitioners across the EU.
Download or read book Finding a Balance written by and published by Office of Technology Assessment. This book was released on 1992 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, prepared by the Office of Technological Assessment (OTA) in response to a request from the House Committee on the Judiciary, examines the rapid and complex technological changes and trends in computer software technologies and their possible effects on the nation's intellectual property system. The three policy issues identified are: (1) the appropriate scope of copyright protection for computer software; (2) patent protection for software-related inventions and algorithms and how the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office will handle these types of applications; and (3) complications facing libraries and commercial and private producers and users of digital information, including computer-based mixed media products. A summary of this report is published separately which contains information found in the first chapter of the complete report. The complete report is divided into six chapters: (1) Summary, Issues, and Options; (2) The Law (patents, copyright, and trade secret law); (3) The International Arena; (4) Software Technology and the Law; (5) Digital Information and Copyright (print and nonprint electronic publishing); and (6) Economics, Intellectual Property and Software. Three appendixes provide a review of selected computer hardware and software initiatives overseas; an analysis of the European Economic Community Treaty and its structure and function; and a list of workshop participants and reviewers. The names of the members of the Congressional Advisory Panel and the OTA project staff are also provided. (ALF).
