Book Synopsis Sustainability and Management by : Kıymet Çalıyurt
Download or read book Sustainability and Management written by Kıymet Çalıyurt and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the 1987 Brundtland Report, sustainable development has become key to the management systems within businesses, and a means by which companies can increase their long-term value. Being a ‘sustainable company’ increasingly means ‘staying alive in business’ and has become a necessity for all kinds of enterprises, from the micro-sized to global corporations. In more recent years, many companies, and indeed governments, have looked at sustainability as a means to combat the multiple challenges of environmental accidents, global warming, resource depletion, energy, poverty and pollution. However, being sustainable or maintaining sustainability is not an easy task for a company’s management function. It needs continuous support and engagement from the board, the executive management, staff and other stakeholders alike. Additionally, it brings extra costs to the company in terms of hiring trained staff, organising continuous training in the company, publishing sustainability reports and subscribing to a rating system. Sustainability must be nourished by a company’s board as well as by all of its departments, such as accounting, marketing and human resources. By the same token, it is not enough for a company simply to declare itself a ‘sustainable business’ or rely on past measures and reputation; sustainability is an ongoing activity and one which has to be proved by periodically disclosing sustainability reports, according to international rating systems. In Sustainability and Management: An International Perspective, Kıymet Çalıyurt and Ülkü Yüksel bring together international authors from a variety of specialisations to discuss the development, aspects, problems, roadmap, trends and disclosure systems for sustainability in management. The result is a lively, insightful exposition of the field.

Book Synopsis Measuring the Marginal Social Cost of Transport by : Christopher Nash
Download or read book Measuring the Marginal Social Cost of Transport written by Christopher Nash and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-10-20 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many transport economists have for some time proposed marginal social cost as the principle on which prices in the transport sector should be based and, in recent years, their prescription has come to be taken more and more seriously by policy-makers. However, in order to properly test the possible implications of implementing pricing based on marginal social cost and, ultimately, to introduce such a system, it is necessary to actually measure the marginal social costs concerned, and how they vary according to mode, time and context. This book reviews the transport pricing policy debate and reports on the significant advances made in measuring the marginal social costs of transport, particularly through UNITE and other European research projects. We look in turn at infrastructure, operating costs, user costs (both of congestion and of charges in frequency of scheduled transport services) accidents and environmental costs, and how these estimates have been used to examine the impact of marginal cost pricing in transport. We finish by examining how the results of case studies might be generalised to obtain estimates of marginal social costs for all circumstances and, finally, presenting our conclusions.
Book Synopsis Managing Corporate Responsibility in the Real World by : Jouko Kuisma
Download or read book Managing Corporate Responsibility in the Real World written by Jouko Kuisma and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive, road-tested framework for managing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) based on years of award winning performance in senior management roles in a multinational business. The author shows why non-financial performance indicators are just as important as financial ones when it comes to delivering performance and securing long term shareholder value. CSR is not window dressing, it is not a tiresome box ticking exercise and it is not a cost centre. Done properly, CSR is a cost-saving, simple everyday process that adds value to your business. While most companies already have suitable founding values and have carried out some basic CSR measures, many lack the systematics for managing the issue holistically across the business. Beginning with a CSR briefing paper for managers new to the area (or for providing to senior management who may need convincing) Managing Corporate Responsibility in the Real World goes on to provide a fully integrated framework for delivering a corporate responsibility programme in your organization. Drawing on real world examples and stories, Jouko Kuisma shows how to start with the political practicalities of setting up an internal steering group to analysis of your firm’s value chain and management principles before drawing up an action plan and set of performance criteria on which to be measured.

Book Synopsis The Transformation of EU Competition Law: Next Generation Issues by : Adina Claici
Download or read book The Transformation of EU Competition Law: Next Generation Issues written by Adina Claici and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2023-05-12 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The controversy surrounding EU competition rules has grown in recent years. Pressure from such phenomena as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and the digital economy have fostered a fragmentation in the interpretation of the rules at both national and EU levels. This volume takes stock of the current situation, assessing the successes and failures of the prevailing ‘modernisation’ policy and setting forth a range of potential legal adaptations designed to offer the right responses to a rapidly changing world. The book’s contributions are based on papers delivered at the 2022 Annual Conference of the Global Competition Law Center (GCLC) at the College of Europe in Bruges. The authors include prominent practitioners and academics, members of the European Commission, representatives of national competition authorities, and judges from both EU and national courts. They address such salient issues as the following: free competition versus ‘regulated competition’ as alternative or complementary models; new methods for the identification of consumer harm and benefits; sui generis competition law regimes for specific sectors; State aid enforcement and crisis management; and the green and digital objectives and their legal and political implications. Taken together, the essays provide extensive treatment of the EU Courts’ jurisprudence and the literature in the field. For practitioners, policymakers and academics working with competition law, the book will clearly explain the new competencies of the Commission, raise awareness of the latest case law on the analysis of effects, and ensure a forward-looking approach to competition law enforcement in Europe.

Download or read book Competition Law in Finland written by Sari Hiltunen and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this practical analysis of competition law and its interpretation in the Finland covers every aspect of the subject – the various forms of restrictive agreements and abuse of dominance prohibited by law and the rules on merger control; tests of illegality; filing obligations; administrative investigation and enforcement procedures; civil remedies and criminal penalties; and raising challenges to administrative decisions. Lawyers who handle transnational commercial transactions will appreciate the explanation of fundamental differences in procedure from one legal system to another, as well as the international aspects of competition law. Throughout the book, the treatment emphasizes enforcement, with relevant cases analysed where appropriate. An informative introductory chapter provides detailed information on the economic, legal, and historical background, including national and international sources, scope of application, an overview of substantive provisions and main notions, and a comprehensive description of the enforcement system including private enforcement. The book proceeds to a detailed analysis of substantive prohibitions, including cartels and other horizontal agreements, vertical restraints, the various types of abusive conduct by the dominant firms and the appraisal of concentrations, and then goes on to the administrative enforcement of competition law, with a focus on the antitrust authorities’ powers of investigation and the right of defence of suspected companies. This part also covers voluntary merger notifications and clearance decisions, as well as a description of the judicial review of administrative decisions. Its succinct yet scholarly nature, as well as the practical quality of the information it provides, make this book a valuable time-saving tool for business and legal professionals alike. Lawyers representing parties with interests in the Finland will welcome this very useful guide, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of international and comparative competition law.
