Download or read book Pseudo-Avicenna. Liber Celi et Mundi written by Oliver Gutman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-06-08 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Critical Edition (together with introduction and English translation) of the Pseudo-Avicenna Liber Celi et Mundi, a Latin translation from Arabic of a paraphrase of Aristotle's De Caelo. It was translated in Spain in the later twelfth century, almost certainly by Dominicus Gundissalinus and Johannes Hispanus. The text circulated widely in Western Europe in the later Middle Ages, in collections of the early Latin translations of the Aristotelian corpus and of the Arabic commentaries. The Origins of the Liber Celi et Mundi are unknown but the editor suggests that the author may have been the prolific Arabic translator, Ḥunayn Ibn Isḥāq. This edition will be of particular interest to students of the Aristotelian tradition and the Arabic and Latin translators.
Book Synopsis Calculating Ethics in the Fourteenth Century by :
Download or read book Calculating Ethics in the Fourteenth Century written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-06-24 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calculating Ethics in the Fourteenth Century addresses a moment in the history of ethics, when discoveries in natural philosophy blurred the boundary between the possible and the impossible, and made the impossible a preferred territory in discussions on practical reason. The volume studies the onset and expansion of a new movement in constructing ethics, as the methods, arguments, and cases adopted from logic and natural philosophy came to be extensively applied at Oxford and swiftly disseminated among other Oxonians eventually making their way outside Oxford. It shows how the Oxford Calculators triggered a unique and durable transformation in ethics. Contributors are Pascale Bermon, Valeria Buffon, Michael W. Dunne, Marek Gensler, Simon Kemp, Edit A. Lukács, Monika Michałowska, and Andrea Nannini.
Book Synopsis The Flesh of the Word by : K. J. Drake
Download or read book The Flesh of the Word written by K. J. Drake and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extra Calvinisticum, the doctrine that the eternal Son maintains his existence beyond the flesh both during his earthly ministry and perpetually, divided the Lutheran and Reformed traditions during the Reformation. This book explores the emergence and development of the extra Calvinisticum in the Reformed tradition by tracing its first exposition from Ulrich Zwingli to early Reformed orthodoxy. Rather than being an ancillary issue, the questions surrounding the extra Calvinisticum were a determinative factor in the differentiation of Magisterial Protestantism into rival confessions. Reformed theologians maintained this doctrine in order to preserve the integrity of both Christ's divine and human natures as the mediator between God and humanity. This rationale remained consistent across this period with increasing elaboration and sophistication to meet the challenges leveled against the doctrine in Lutheran polemics. The study begins with Zwingli's early use of the extra Calvinisticum in the Eucharistic controversy with Martin Luther and especially as the alternative to Luther's doctrine of the ubiquity of Christ's human body. Over time, Reformed theologians, such as Peter Martyr Vermigli and Antione de Chandieu, articulated the extra Calvinisticum with increasing rigor by incorporating conciliar christology, the church fathers, and scholastic methodology to address the polemical needs of engagement with Lutheranism. The Flesh of the Word illustrates the development of christological doctrine by Reformed theologians offering a coherent historical narrative of Reformed christology from its emergence into the period of confessionalization. The extra Calvinisticum was interconnected to broader concerns affecting concepts of the union of Christ's natures, the communication of attributes, and the understanding of heaven.
