Book excerpt: This thesis deals with analytical predictions and experimental determination of the modal frequencies and shapes associated with the arm portion of the Naval Postgraduate School's Flexible Spacecraft Simulator (FSS). A description of how piezoceramic sensors and actuators are incorporated in finite element modeling is presented. A MATLAB(TM) code conducting the finite element modeling of the arm is used to verify the modal frequencies generated via Structural Dynamic Research Corporation's I-DEAS(TM) software. Modal testing is conducted with the I-DEAS Test package to determine the first four physical modal frequencies and shapes so that we may compare them with the analytical results. The results of the testing indicated that finite element analysis predicted modes one and three within an average of 23.1%, and modes two and four within an average of 4.4%.

Book excerpt: This book describes the active vibration control techniques which have been developed to suppress excessive vibrations of structures. It covers the fundamental principles of active control methods and their applications and shows how active vibration control techniques have replaced traditional passive vibration control. The book includes coverage of dynamic modeling, control design, sensing methodology, actuator mechanism and electronic circuit design, and the implementation of control algorithms via digital controllers. An in-depth approach has been taken to describe the modeling of structures for control design, the development of control algorithms suitable for structural control, and the implementation of control algorithms by means of Simulink block diagrams or C language. Details of currently available actuators and sensors and electronic circuits for signal conditioning and filtering have been provided based on the most recent advances in the field. The book is used as a textbook for students and a reference for researchers who are interested in studying cutting-edge technology. It will be a valuable resource for academic and industrial researchers and professionals involved in the design and manufacture of active vibration controllers for structures in a wide variety of fields and industries including the automotive, rail, aerospace, and civil engineering sectors.

Book excerpt: Like the previous editions also the third edition of this book combines the detailed physical modeling of mechatronic systems and their precise numerical simulation using the Finite Element (FE) method. Thereby, the basic chapter concerning the Finite Element (FE) method is enhanced, provides now also a description of higher order finite elements (both for nodal and edge finite elements) and a detailed discussion of non-conforming mesh techniques. The author enhances and improves many discussions on principles and methods. In particular, more emphasis is put on the description of single fields by adding the flow field. Corresponding to these field, the book is augmented with the new chapter about coupled flow-structural mechanical systems. Thereby, the discussion of computational aeroacoustics is extended towards perturbation approaches, which allows a decomposition of flow and acoustic quantities within the flow region. Last but not least, applications are updated and restructured so that the book meets modern demands.

Book excerpt: This book presents new ideas in the framework of novel, finite element discretization schemes for solids and structure, focusing on the mechanical as well as the mathematical background. It also explores the implementation and automation aspects of these technologies. Furthermore, the authors highlight recent developments in mixed finite element formulations in solid mechanics as well as novel techniques for flexible structures at finite deformations. The book also describes automation processes and the application of automatic differentiation technique, including characteristic problems, automatic code generation and code optimization. The combination of these approaches leads to highly efficient numerical codes, which are fundamental for reliable simulations of complicated engineering problems. These techniques are used in a wide range of applications from elasticity, viscoelasticity, plasticity, and viscoplasticity in classical engineering disciplines, such as civil and mechanical engineering, as well as in modern branches like biomechanics and multiphysics.
