The first chapter presents an overview of the text. Chapter 2 is devoted to the introduction of the definitions and terminology used in composite materials and structures. Anisotropic constitutive relations and Iaminate plate theories are also reviewed. Finite element models of laminated composite plates are presented in Chapter 3. Numerical evaluation of element coefficient matrices, post-computation of strains and stresses, and sample examples of laminated plates in bending and vibration are discussed. Chapter 4 introduces damage and failure criteria in composite laminates. Finally, Chapter 5 is dedicated to case studies involving various aspects and types of composite structures. Joints, cutouts, woven composites, environmental effects, postbuckling response and failure of composite laminates are discussed by considering specific examples.

Dynamic Relaxation (DR) method is presented for the geometrically linear and nonlinear laterally loaded, rectangular laminated plates. The analysis uses the Mindlin plate theory which accounts for transverse shear deformation. A computer program has been compiled. The convergence and accuracy of the DR solutions for elastic small and large deflection response are established by comparison with various exact and approximate solutions. New numerical results are generated for uniformly loaded square laminated plates which serve to quantify the effects of shear deformation, material anisotropy, fiber orientation, and coupling between bending and stretching. It was found that linear analysis seriously over-predicts deflections of plates. The shear deflection depends greatly on a number of factors such as length/ thickness ratio, degree of anisotropy and number of layers. It was also found that coupling between bending and stretching can increase or decrease the bending stiffness of a laminate depending on whether it is positive or negative.

The model uses quadrilateral elements to represent the shape of the plate and the elements are stacked in the thickness direction to represent various material layers. This analysis allows for orthotropic, elastic-plastic or elastic-viscoplastic material properties. Non-linear strain displacement relations are used to represent large transverse plate deflections. A finite difference technique is used to perform the numerical time integration. Assumptions are made about the response through the thickness of the plate that allows for the use of relatively large time increments in the numerical integration method. These led to a set of element equilibrium equations which help to keep small error from affecting the values of stress that are calculated. The results from the analytical model are compared with experimental results. A good agreement is found between the calculated and measured values of the transverse plate deflections.

Two families of hybrid-stress-based multilayer plate elements are considered; these elements are denoted as thick plate and moderately-thick plate elements. In the development of the thick plate elements, transverse shear deformation effects are included by allowing lines normal to the plate midsurface in the undeformed state to be piecewise linear from layer to layer in the deformed state. Transverse shear deformation effects are included in an average sense in the moderately-thick plate element family by assuming that straight lines normal to the plate midsurface prior to deformation remain straight but not necessarily normal to the plate midsurface after deformation. Comparison of the results obtained by using the thick plate and moderately-thick plate elements with independent analytical results shows that the moderately-thick plate elements are more efficient and practical for the analysis of multilayer structures having a large number of elastically dissimilar layers.

The dynamic analysis for equations of motion, for those theories are presented, solved by using the modal analysis of forced vibration.The results are the response ,stresses, and inter-laminar shear stresses, solution by first order shear deformation theory "FSDT", for symmetric and antisymmetric, cross-ply and angle-ply, laminated plates subjected to the static and dynamic loading conditions considered here is the sine, rectangular, expanison, ramp and triangular pulses while spatially, they are considered as central sinusoidal and uniformly distributed load for stiffened and unstiffened laminated plates. In addition, the results for deflections, stresses and inter-laminar shear stresses are presented showing the effect of plate side-to-thickness ratio, aspect ratio, material orthotropy, fiber orientation, boundary conditions and lamination scheme and are confirmed with other solutions and finite element results. The analysis results for deflection, stresses and inter-laminar shear stresses of stiffened laminated plates are presented showing the effect of number of stiffeners, high to width of stiffener ratio, high of stiffener, the width of stiffener, and the stiffener properties and are confirmed with other solutions and finite element results.The results obtained are the deflection, stresses, and inter-laminar shear stresses of un-stiffened plates are decreases with increasing the number of layer, fiber orientation (optimum angle 45), or thickness of laminated plates. In addition the deflection, stresses, and inter-laminar shear stresses for stiffened laminated plates are decreases with increasing the number of stiffeners, thickness, or height of stiffeners.

The reason for this presentation is because the authors believe that partial hybrid finite element method is more efficient that the displacement based finite element method for the stress analysis oflaminated composites. In fact, the examples in chapter 5 of this book show that the partial hybrid finite element method is about 5 times more efficient than the displacement based finite element method. Since there is a great need for accurate and efficient calculation of interlaminar stresses for the design using composites, the partial hybrid finite method does provide one possible solution. Hybrid finite method has been in existence since 1964 and a significant amount of work has been done on the topic. However, the authors are not aware of any systematic piece of literature that gives a detailed presentation of the method. Chapters of the displacement finite element method and the evolution 1 and 2 present a sununary of the hybrid finite element method. Hopefully, these two chapters can provide the readers with an appreciation for the difference between the displacement finite element method and the hybrid finite element. It also should prepare the readers for the introduction of partial hybrid finite element method presented in chapter 3.

Book excerpt: This thesis will study the effects of material properties, thickness ratio, aspect ratio, boundary conditions, and ply layup on the reactions of a transversely loaded rectangular composite plate. Geometric nonlinearities, i.e. the Von Karman nonlinear plate equations, and through the thickness shear effects were included. Both geometrically linear and nonlinear solutions were done. This research was done using an existing finite element code with a four-noded, 28 DOF rectangular element. All plates were 48 plies thick to be representative of a real world application. Material properties had the largest effect when the plate was thick. The linear solution approaches the classical laminated plate theory solution as the plate gets thin. The nonlinear solution deflects much less than the stiffen the plate. For a clamped plate the linear and nonlinear solutions are comparable until the plate is quite thin. Aspect ratio has a large effect on the plate for an isotropic material. However, in the ply layups investigated, aspect ratio had much less effect because half the fibers were oriented in the direction of the short dimension of the plate. Ply layup did not have a great effect on the deflections of the plate. This occurred because all the layups chosen had at least half the plies oriented in the same direction. (jhd).
