Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Femoral component loosening and Prosthetic stem fractures have renewed interest in conservative alternatives to conventional total hip replacements. One such alternative is the concept of surface replacement. The objective in this study is a finite element analysis of a femoral surface replacement cup with Particular attention given to the interfacial stresses. An axisymmetric model with a grid of two-dimensional isoparametric elements is generated. This study utilizes an adaptive model so as to include the effect of bone remodeling in response to stress. The stiffness is considered to be linearly proportional to the stress in the femoral head and neck. Isotropic properties are chosen. The stresses are determined by performing iterative finite element analyses based upon an appropriate variation of the stiffness property in each analysis until the results obtained are within the convergence limit. Plots of stress contours in the femoral head are obtained for the loads acting on the joint during walking.

This book was released on 2008-08 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Medicine - Biomedical Engineering, grade: 1.0, Technical University of Munich (LS Statik), course: Master of Science of Computational Mechanics, 94 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The process of adaptive bone remodeling can be described mathematically and simulated in a computer model, integrated with the finite element method. The main focus of this thesis is the implementation of a bone remodeling algorithm in MATLAB and ANSYS on the basis of FEM. The strain energy density is used as mechanical stimulus. The cortical and trabecular bone are described as continuous materials with variable density. This thesis can be divided into four main parts. The first part is due to the material properties of cortical and trabecular bone. The second part is about the remodeling theory and gives an historical review of the developed numerical approaches up to now. The implementation of the remodeling algorithm in ANSYS and MATLAB as well as its validation is topic of part three. In last main part, the algorithm is applied to a 2D FE-model of a human proximal femur.

Book Synopsis Image-Based Multilevel Biomechanical Modeling for Fall-Induced Hip Fracture by : Yunhua Luo
Download or read book Image-Based Multilevel Biomechanical Modeling for Fall-Induced Hip Fracture written by Yunhua Luo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-05 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fall-induced hip fracture is an epidemic health risk among elderly people. This book presents an image-based multilevel modeling approach to understanding the biomechanics involved in fall-induced hip fracture. By hierarchically integrating a body-level dynamics model, a femur-level finite element model, and a local bone failure model, the biomechanics approach is able to simulate all stages in sideways falls and to incorporate all biomechanical variables affecting hip fracture. This book is useful for clinicians to accurately evaluate fracture risk, for biomechanical engineers to virtually test hip protective devices, and for biomedical students to learn image-based biomechanical modeling techniques. This book also covers: Biomechanical viewing on bone composition, bone remodeling, and bone strength Bone imaging and information captured for constructing biomechanical models Bone mechanical testing and mechanical properties required for biomechanical modeling
