Book excerpt: The Fifty Falls Challenge was created to help draw visitors away from the High Peaks Region to areas less-visited. While there are numerous waterfalls in the High Peaks Region, many are hard to get to. By good fortune, the majority of the more easily accessible waterfalls and cascades fall outside of the High Peaks. By creating the Fifty Falls Challenge, the hope is that it will help ease some of the strain of overcrowding in the High Peaks; that it will allow hikers to discover other fun and exciting areas of the Adirondacks; and that participants, taking on the challenge, will visit local businesses and help out those economies.

As a kid, he spun around on many Michigan lakes in his own personalized painted inner tube. He swam in Ocqueoc Falls... went behind Tahquamenon Falls and under Lower Tahquamenon Falls... canoed the AuSable River, even in the winter, as mini icebergs floated along... paddled his kayak to a campsite on the river and watched paddlers in the AuSable River Canoe Marathon race go by... took a raft down multiple white-water rivers in the Eastern and Southern U.S... and hitchhiked to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park a few times in his mid-twenties. Wilks belongs to the Smoky Mountain Hiking Club and the TV Hikers Club. He took up rock climbing and white-water kayaking and became a rock-climbing instructor with an outdoor club called Solar. He paddled and climbed in the Midwest, East, and South United States and also Canada. He took white water kayak lessons and eventually taught some of those classes. He kayaked the Delhi Rapids in Ann Arbor and paddled in the Detroit River into Canada. He also belongs to the Soggy Bottoms kayak club and continues to lead kayaking trips with the club.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes are the largest collection of fresh surface water on earth, and more than 40 million Americans and Canadians live in their basin. Will we divert water from the Great Lakes, causing them to end up like Central Asia's Aral Sea, which has lost 90 percent of its surface area and 75 percent of its volume since 1960? Or will we come to see that unregulated water withdrawals are ultimately catastrophic? Peter Annin writes a fast-paced account of the people and stories behind these upcoming battles. Destined to be the definitive story for the general public as well as policymakers, The Great Lakes Water Wars is a balanced, comprehensive look behind the scenes at the conflicts and compromises that are the past-and future-of this unique resource.

Book excerpt: A sweeping history of this natural wonder, from its geological beginnings to the present. "The noble cataract reflects the concerns, failings, and fancies of the times. If we gaze deeply into its shimmering image we can perhaps discern our own." - page 22 “[Pierre Berton] makes a serious and convincing case for Niagara's pivotal role in North American history. ... His Niagara is a lodestar for North American culture and invention: site of the first railway suspension bridge, inspiration for Nikola Tesla's discovery of the principle of alternating current, and the subject of Frederic Church's most celebrated landscape; a natural wonder that has bewitched generations of scientists, authors, and utopians, and stimulated innovations and social movements still casting long shadows. ... surprising, rich and engrossing.” -- Thurston Clarke, New York Times Book Review “Canadian historian Berton tells dozens of absorbing tales about the region and those who passed through it ... He tells them all superbly, aided by essential maps and a few reproductions of posters advertising some of the more bizarre stunts.” -- Publishers Weekly “Entertaining. . . . Berton brings to life the adventurers and dreamers, visionaries and industrialists, who over centuries have been drawn to the Falls.” -- Maclean’s "Berton at his storytelling best; there is something here for everyone. ... a vintage, full-bodied read." -- The London Free Press "A book worth diving into." -- Calgary Herald "By turns ironic, amused, shocked, horrified and awestruck, Berton traces Niagara's history through the deeds of those who came in contact with it ... all the while walking the fine line between detachment and emotion with agility and grace." -- The Whig-Standard (Kingston) Pierre Berton was one of Canada’s most popular and prolific authors, and is widely credited with popularizing Canadian history. His previous books include The Wild Frontier, Prisoners of the North, Klondike, The Invasion of Canada, and The Great Depression.
