Science and Technology Transfer Unit and published by Brockville : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Science and Technology Transfer Unit. This book was released on 1995 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impacts of siltation and suspended sediments on water quality and resident aquatic organisms is one of the most common problems facing resource managers today. Most construction activities in or near a watercourse have the potential to result in decreased shoreline stability and/or an increase in siltation, suspended sediments and turbidity. This annotated biliography was prepared in response to requests from seveal Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources biologists and technicians in the Southern Region. The author attempted to assemble and summarize reference material on various aspects of this topic including sources of suspended solids, physical/chemical processes, impacts to water quality and aquatic life, and remediations. This bibliography is intended to prove a consolidation and synthesis of information which is readily available for day-to-day use by field staff. Almost 1200 references are cited.
Book Synopsis The Effects of Logging and Mass Wasting on Juvenile Salmonid Populations in Streams on the Queen Charlotte Islands by : D. B. Tripp
Download or read book The Effects of Logging and Mass Wasting on Juvenile Salmonid Populations in Streams on the Queen Charlotte Islands written by D. B. Tripp and published by Victoria, B.C.: Research Branch, Ministry of Forests. This book was released on 1992 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of logging and mass wasting on juvenile coho salmon and Dolly Varden char were assessed in streams on the Queen Charlotte Islands. Fish densities and habitat characteristics of 27-33 stream reaches were measured during summer and fall. Reach samples included undisturbed, unlogged old-growth forest, logged streams not directly affected by recent mass wasting (logged), and logged streams directly affected by recent debris torrents and slides (mass wasted). Overwinter survivals and smolt yields in three mass wasted and three non-mass wasted streams (all logged) were also estimated in a downstream spring fish trapping program, after determining the number of fish present in each stream the previous fall.

Book Synopsis Riparian Areas by : National Research Council
Download or read book Riparian Areas written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-10-10 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.

Book Synopsis Production of Juvenile Atlantic Salmon, Salmo Salar, in Natural Waters by : National Research Council Canada
Download or read book Production of Juvenile Atlantic Salmon, Salmo Salar, in Natural Waters written by National Research Council Canada and published by NRC Research Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up-to-date information, knowledge and research in progress in scientific fields related to natural production of juvenile Atlantic salmon and some other ecologically similar fluvial salmonids is contained in the 25 papers and 12 abstracts contained in this publication, which were prepared for an international symposium held in St. John's, Newfoundland. Studies relate to stream ecology, invertebrates and predators, habitat improvement, competitive effects, behaviour and dispersal, habitat and production of juvenile salmon, population dynamics and relationships of juvenile salmon estimates to smolt yields. A list of participants at the conference is also provided.
