Book excerpt: Excerpt from Finding List of the Public Library Fort Wayne, Indiana, 1897 The Board appointed a committee of four to serve with a committee of four appointed by the Woman's Club League, as a permanent library committee. In September, 1894, Mrs. S. C. Hoffman was appointed librarian by the Board of School Trustees. On the evening of January 28, 1895, the Opening of the library was celebrated by a public meeting held in the Council Chamber, Mayor Oak ley presiding. A program of exercises, appropriate to the occasion, was presented, followed by an inspection of the library located in adjacent rooms. The circulating of books began January 29th, at 10 o'clock a. M. The library Opened with volumes on the shelves; of this number, the 117 volumes presented by the Woman's Club League, formed the nucleus to which were added 800 volumes, presented by the Allen County Teachers' Association; volumes, turned over from the public school library; 247 volumes of donated public documents, and volumes, acquired by pur chase. The library now numbers volumes. This does not include the public documents recently acquired by reason of the library having been made a repository for government publications, which, when catalogued and shelved, will become valuable reference books. September, 1895, found the library removed from the City Building to its present quarters on the Southwest Corner of Wayne and Clinton Streets, where, on October 7, 1895, it was again opened to the public.
