Book Synopsis Finding Balanchine's Lost Ballets by : Elizabeth Kattner
Download or read book Finding Balanchine's Lost Ballets written by Elizabeth Kattner and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since George Balanchine arrived on the American dance scene in 1933, his revolutionary, fleet-footed repertoire has been immortalized in the ballet canon. Yet most of the works he created in Russia as a budding choreographer have been lost to history—until now. In the first book to focus exclusively on Balanchine’s Russian ballets, Elizabeth Kattner offers new insights into the artistic evolution of a legend through her reconstruction of his first group ballet, Funeral March. Drawing on more than a decade of research conducted in archives in the United States and Europe, Kattner synthesizes textual descriptions, photographs, musical scores, and the comparative study of other early Balanchine ballets in order to re-create this forgotten work. By interpreting and building upon these historical findings in the studio and in performance, this project enables dance history to be experienced kinesthetically. Addressing the controversy surrounding whether unrecorded dances should be reconstructed in the first place, Kattner meticulously describes her research methodologies, providing a valuable resource for other scholars seeking to revive history in this way. Finding Balanchine’s Lost Ballets enriches our understanding of Balanchine’s development as a choreographer through its ambitious, original approach to the subject. Kattner argues for the importance of dance reconstruction, when correctly approached, as a tool for reimagining the past and charting the future possibilities of dance history research.

Book Synopsis In the Land of Good Living by : Kent Russell
Download or read book In the Land of Good Living written by Kent Russell and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wickedly smart, funny, and irresistibly off-kilter account of an improbable thousand-mile journey on foot into the heart of modern Florida, the state that Russell calls "America Concentrate." In the summer of 2016, Kent Russell--broke, at loose ends, hungry for adventure--set off to walk across Florida. Mythic, superficial, soaked in contradictions, maligned by cultural elites, segregated from the South, and literally vanishing into the sea, Florida (or, as he calls it: "America Concentrate") seemed to Russell to embody America's divided soul. The journey, with two friends intent on filming the ensuing mayhem, quickly reduces the trio to filthy drifters pushing a shopping cart of camera equipment. They get waylaid by a concerned citizen bearing a rifle; buy cocaine from an ex-wrestler; visit a spiritual medium. The narrative overflows with historical detail about how modern Florida came into being after World War II, and how it came to be a petri dish for life in a suddenly, increasingly diverse new land of minority-majority cities and of unrivaled ethnic and religious variety. Russell has taken it all in with his incomparably focused lens and delivered a book that is both an inspired travelogue and a profound rumination on the nation's soul--and his own. It is a book that is wildly vivid, encyclopedic, erudite, and ferociously irreverent--a deeply ambivalent love letter to his sprawling, brazenly varied home state.

Book Synopsis New Directions in the Search for the First Floridians by : David K. Thulman
Download or read book New Directions in the Search for the First Floridians written by David K. Thulman and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting the most current research and thinking on prehistoric archaeology in the Southeast, this volume reexamines some of Florida’s most important Paleoindian sites and discusses emerging technologies and methods that are necessary knowledge for archaeologists working in the region today. Using new analytical methods, contributors explore fresh perspectives on sites including Old Vero, Guest Mammoth, Page-Ladson, and Ray Hole Spring. They discuss the role of hydrology—rivers, springs, and coastal plain drainages—in the history of Florida’s earliest inhabitants. They address both the research challenges and the unique preservation capacity of the state’s many underwater sites, suggesting solutions for analyzing corroded lithic artifacts and submerged midden deposits. Looking towards future research, archaeologists discuss strategies for finding additional pre-Clovis and Clovis-era sites offshore on the southeastern continental shelf. The search is important, these essays show, because Florida’s prehistoric sites hold critical data for the debate over the nature and timing of the first human colonization of the Western Hemisphere.

Book excerpt: The natural history of Florida comes alive in this merry romp through its sandhills and swamps. With sprinklings of history and culture, the author shares his insights about the Spanish moss draping your live oaks and the pocket gophers tunneling in your yard. He shows that exciting nature is often readily accessible, just outside the door, underfoot, and overhead. The subtext in the 52 nature essays that compose this volume is the author's personal struggle to accept Florida and the South as his home. The path he takes to this personal discovery slogs through cypress swamps, climbs into the canopies of savanna live oaks, and chases fox squirrels through longleaf pine savannas. Along the way he shares his botanical and ecological insights about everything from sand grains to hurricanes. There's something here for readers interested in wild edible plants, those who are curious about Tung Blossom Queens, and anyone interested in foraging for wild edibles.
Book Synopsis Tales of Old Florida by : Frank Oppel
Download or read book Tales of Old Florida written by Frank Oppel and published by Castle Books. This book was released on 2008-05-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred years ago, Florida was a wilderness of swamp and beach, dense forest and abundant wild game. Undiscovered, except for a few pioneer sportsmen and hearty farmers and ranchers, the state was still a frontier. True, a few towns flourished on the fishing and the Caribbean trade, but it was generally a sleepy place, far removed from the later boom of the 1920s. Here is a collection of original articles and stories of the old Florida, of hunters and Indians, the development of the sportsman's paradise, the vast canvas of nature prior to the coming of the condominium. Illustrated with rare drawings, photographs and engravings, this book will recreate a paradise that can never be again.
