This book was released on 1998 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains 21 contributions, each written by an expert in the area of sedimentary basins. The first part of the book is devoted to the methodology used for these studies, in particular physical measurements (well-logging and seismic) and synthesis of subsurface data. The second part presents specific cases, each corresponding to a particular type of basin.

Book Synopsis Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, and Depositional Environments of the Coal-bearing Jurassic-Cretaceous Kootenay Group, Alberta and British Columbia by : D. W. Gibson
Download or read book Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, and Depositional Environments of the Coal-bearing Jurassic-Cretaceous Kootenay Group, Alberta and British Columbia written by D. W. Gibson and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strata of the Kootenay Group are of economic interest because of their potential as important sources of thermal and metallurgical coal in Western Canada. This bulletin provides substantial new information and data on the Kootenay Group in the form of text, isopach maps and cross-sections, and numerous illustrations of lithofacies, lithofacies relationships, age, correlation, rank, distribution and continuity of coal seams, sedimentology, and the major environment of deposition in the Rocky Mountain Foothills and Front Ranges. A regional geological model is presented that will be of assistance in assessing the quality and potential of coal resources in the Kootenay Group in Alberta and British Columbia.

Book Synopsis Sand and Sandstone by : F. J. Pettijohn
Download or read book Sand and Sandstone written by F. J. Pettijohn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition appeared fourteen years ago. Since then there have been significant advances in our science that warrant an updating and revision of Sand and Sandstone. The main framework of the first edition has been retained so that the reader can begin with the mineralogy and textural properties of sands and sandstones, progress through their organization and classification and their study as a body of rock, to consideration of their origin-prove nance, transportation, deposition, and lithification-and finally to their place in the stratigraphic column and the basin. The last decade has seen the rise of facies analysis based on a closer look at the stratigraphic record and the recognition of characteristic bed ding sequences that are the signatures of some geologic process-such as a prograding shallow-water delta or the migration of a point bar on an alluvial floodplain. The environment of sand deposition is more closely determined by its place in such depositional systems than by criteria based on textural characteristics-the "fingerprint" approach. Our revi sion reflects this change in thinking. As in the geological sciences as a whole, the concept of plate tectonics has required a rethinking of our older ideas about the origin and accumu lation of sediments-especially the nature of the sedimentary basins.
