Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brookings Institution Press and American Assembly publication Slow job growth, declining home values, a diminishing tax base, and concentrated poverty are but a few of the growing obstacles for well-established but struggling cities. Challenged by decades of globalization, technological change, and dramatic demographic shifts away from the urban core, these former industrial powerhouses, particularly in the Northeast and Midwest, have been eclipsed by burgeoning American cities with a viable niche in the new economy. In Retooling for Growth, experts present new frameworks, cutting-edge analysis, and innovative policy solutions for the nation's government, business, civic, and community leaders to sculpt a sustainable and supportable economy for older industrial areas. The unique focus on rehabilitating weak market cities outlines ideas for reshaping the role of public agencies, the workforce, business organizations, and technology. Implementation of these measures addresses challenges such as fostering entrepreneurship, reducing poverty and inequality, and maintaining and augmenting the number of skilled professionals who reside and work in a community, among others. This collection of essays offers practical, achievable strategies for revitalizing industrial areas and building upon the potential of existing but overlooked resources of economic, physical, and cultural significance. In this important volume, leading authorities provide a thought-provoking analysis of healthy economic development practices for both public and private sectors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides a review of recent economic developments and current economic prospects. It presents a comparison of financing patterns in developed and developing countries, identifying similarities and differences across firms. Particular questions of interest are: How do corporations in developing countries finance growth? To what extent do these corporations resort to external finance? Does loan finance dominate other types of external finance? How different are financing patterns in developed and developing countries? As a second objective, the paper looks more closely at patterns within developing countries themselves. The questions of interest are: How similar are corporate capital structures in fast growing countries to those in more slowly growing countries? What is the relationship between firm size and corporate financial patterns? What is the relationship between corporate growth and corporate financing patterns? Do companies which grow faster retain a greater proportion of their profits? One issue of particular interest to IFC is whether capital structures and financial profiles of corporations supported by IFC in various developing countries are similar to those of other comparable companies.

This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic has uncovered major weaknesses in our global system. It has shown beyond doubt how the prevalence of poverty, weak health systems, lack of cducation, and above all sub-optimal global coopcration is aggravating the crisis. Be- sides its immcdiatc impact on hcalth, the socio-cconomic conscqucnces of the pan-demic are likcly to be felt by cconomic actors all over the world, and the populations of developing countries and economies in transition are expected to be among those most vulnerable to suffer from COVID-19-related challenges. The economic impact of COVID-19 pandemic has also left its mark on Sustainable Development financing. Financing Sustainable Developmment is critical for the future of the countries of the Global South. These countries are dependent on a single source of financing i.e. the ODAs from thec developed Global North. It is estimated that the financing gap betwecn the pre and post pandemic times could increase by a whopping 70 pcrccnt, owing to the fall in ODAs as a result of poor growth outlook in the devcoped countrics. 'The retreat from globalisation and the devastating impact of the pandemic on global economic growth needs to be dealt with an alternate strategy for financing Sustainable Development. The post-pandemic development finance needs to tap into muliple sources of financing that might include the public domestic resources, private sector linance, ODA from other governmens and philanthropies, remittances and South-South lows. This book is an outcome of the first of its kind e-conference in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, tackling the qucstions of cconomic growth recovery in the Global South and financing sustainable dcvclopment among the poor and vulncrable commu-nities of the Global South. Prof.(Dr.) Hebatallah Adam is Associate Professor, Assistant Dean for Acadcmic Affairs of Jindal School of International Affairs ISIA) and Executive director of Jindal Centre for the Global South O.P.Jindal Global University, Haryana - India. She is affiliated as well to the Department of Economics, Faculty of Business, Ain Shams University Cairo-Egypt where she has acquired more than 17 years of research and academic leaching experience.

Book excerpt: Industrial policy, once relegated to resource allocation, technological improvements, and the modernization of industries, should be treated as a serious component of sustainability and developmental economics. A rich set of complimentary institutions, shared behavioral norms, and public policies have sustained economic growth from Britain's industrial revolution onwards. This volume revisits the role of industrial policy in the success of these strategies and what it can offer developed and developing economies today. Featuring essays from experts invested in the expansion of industrial policies, topics discussed include the most effective use of industrial policies in learning economies, development finance, and promoting investment in regional and global contexts. Also included are in-depth case studies of Japan and India's experience with industrial policy in the banking and private sector. One essay revisits the theoretical and conceptual foundations of industrial policy from a structural economics perspective and another describes the models, packages, and transformation cycles that constitute a variety of approaches to implementation. The collection concludes with industrial strategies for facilitating quality growth, realizing more sustainable manufacturing development, and encouraging countries to industrialize around their natural resources.

This book brings together the vast array of new initiatives in financing mechanisms and proposals to transform the development finance architecture. Based on four different scenarios for the next ten-year period, proposals are made for how to reach an effective system.
