Book excerpt: Financial Modeling Excellence: Innovative Approaches to Stock Predictions (Third Edition) provides a comprehensive and advanced exploration of various probabilistic models used in stock price predictions. The book begins with an in-depth analysis of time series data, covering essential topics such as stationarity, trend and seasonality analysis, and time series decomposition. It then delves into autoregressive (AR) models, moving average (MA) models, and their combinations, including ARMA and ARIMA models. Each chapter provides detailed explanations of model selection, parameter estimation, diagnostics, and validation, along with practical applications in financial forecasting. The book further explores state space models and the Kalman filter, offering insights into their implementation and applications in stock price predictions. Hidden Markov models (HMM), Bayesian models, and stochastic processes are also thoroughly examined, with a focus on their mathematical formulations, parameter estimation techniques, and real-world applications. Case studies and practical examples are provided throughout the book to illustrate the effectiveness of these models in financial analysis. This edition also introduces advanced techniques and future directions for each model, ensuring that readers are equipped with the latest tools and knowledge in the field. This is the third edition of the series, following the first edition titled Stock Price Predictions: An Introduction to Probabilistic Models and the second edition titled Forecasting Stock Prices: Mathematics of Probabilistic Models. This book was released on 2024-10-30 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third volume in the "Stock Predictions" series builds on the success of the first edition, "Stock Price Predictions: An Introduction to Probabilistic Models" (ISBN 979-8223912712), and the second edition, "Forecasting Stock Prices: Mathematics of Probabilistic Models" (ISBN 979-8223038993). This new edition delves deeper into the complex world of quantitative finance, providing readers with a comprehensive guide to advanced financial models used in stock price prediction. The book covers a wide array of models, beginning with the foundational concept of Brownian Motion, which represents the random movement of stock prices and underpins many financial models. It then progresses to Geometric Brownian Motion, a model that accounts for the exponential growth often observed in stock prices. Mean Reversion Models are introduced to capture the tendency of stock prices to revert to their long-term average, offering a counterpoint to trend-following strategies. The book explores the world of volatility modeling with GARCH models, which capture the clustering and persistence of volatility in financial markets, crucial for risk management and option pricing. Extensions of GARCH, such as EGARCH and TGARCH, are examined to address the asymmetric impact of positive and negative news on volatility. In the latter part of the book, the focus shifts to Machine Learning, demonstrating how techniques like Support Vector Machines and Neural Networks can uncover complex patterns in financial data and enhance prediction accuracy. Recurrent Neural Networks, particularly LSTMs, are highlighted for their ability to model sequential data, making them ideal for capturing the temporal dynamics of stock prices. Monte Carlo simulations are discussed as a powerful tool for generating a range of possible future outcomes, enabling investors to assess risk and make informed decisions. Finally, Copula Models are introduced to model the dependence structure between multiple assets, critical for portfolio management and risk assessment. Throughout the book, each model is presented with a clear explanation of its mathematical formulation, parameter estimation techniques, and practical applications in stock price prediction. The book emphasizes the strengths and limitations of each model, equipping readers with the knowledge to select the most appropriate model for their specific needs. This book is an invaluable resource for students, researchers, and practitioners in finance and investments seeking to master the quantitative tools used in stock price prediction. With its rigorous yet accessible approach, this book empowers readers to leverage advanced financial models and make informed investment decisions in today's dynamic markets. The book is based on 95 research studies, which are listed on the references page and uploaded on Harvard University's Dataverse for transparency. As a published book, it has undergone review for originality.

Book excerpt: This is the story of the men who, as political realists, fought for the cause of racial reform in America before, during, and after the Civil War. Charles Sumner, Thaddeus Stevens, Benjamin F. Wade, and Zachariah Chandler are the central figures in Mr. Trefousse's study of the Radical Republicans who steered a course between the extreme abolitionists on the one hand and the more cautious gradualists on the other, as they strove to break the slaveholder's domination of the federal government andthen to wrest from the postbellum South an acknowledgment of the civil rights of the Negro. The author delineates their key role in founding the Republican party and follows their struggle to keep the party firm in its opposition to the expansion of slavery, to commit it to emancipation, and finally to make it the party of racial justice. This is the story as well of the tangled relationship of the Radical Republicans with Abraham Lincoln—a relationship of both quarrels and mutual support. The author stresses the similarity between Lincoln's ultimate aims and those of the Radical Republicans, demonstrating that without Lincoln's support Sumner and his colleagues could never have accomplished their ends—and that without their help Lincoln might not have succeeded in crushing the rebellion and putting an end to the slavery. And he argues that by 1865 Lincoln's Reconstruction policies were nearing those of the Radicals and that, had he lived, they would not have broken with him as they did with his successor. Lincoln's assassination left the Radicals with no means to translate their demands into effective action. Their efforts to remake the South in such a way as to secure justice for the Negro brought them into conflict with President Johnson, in whose impeachment they played a leading role. Although they succeeded in initiating congressional Reconstruction and adding the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments to the Constitution, the Radicals lost power after the failure of the Johnson impeachment. Mr. Trefousse shows how, despite their declining influence throughout the 1870s, their accomplishments helped make possible—a century later—the resumption of the struggle for civil rights.

Book excerpt: Age of Betrayal is a brilliant reconsideration of America's first Gilded Age, when war-born dreams of freedom and democracy died of their impossibility. Focusing on the alliance between government and railroads forged by bribes and campaign contributions, Jack Beatty details the corruption of American political culture that, in the words of Rutherford B. Hayes, transformed “a government of the people, by the people, and for the people” into “a government by the corporations, of the corporations, and for the corporations.” A passionate, gripping, scandalous and sorrowing history of the triumph of wealth over commonwealth.

Book excerpt: This is the new edition of the highly acclaimed Latin America in the 1930s , a text which has proved invaluable for teachers, researchers and students alike. The second edition has been revised and updated, including a new preface and updated statistical material, to form the second volume in An Economic History of Twentieth-Century Latin America . This book confronts the puzzle of Latin America's rapid recovery from the collapse in world markets and capital flows in the late 1920s. It shows how far the safety valves which made recovery possible in the 1930s were not available fifty years later. It documents the impact of crisis on the changing role of the state and on institutional development. The Central American case studies have been updated with significantly improved data.
