Book excerpt: In the present study, we examine the issue of integration of financial markets in India. Given the growing movement of capital flows, particularly short-term capital, into the domestic financial markets, it is necessary to examine this issue so as to reap the positive benefits with having stable markets. For this purpose, the present study examines this issue in the post-1991 period by using monthly data on call money rates, 91 day Treasury Bill rates, Indian Rupee/US dollar exchange rates, and the London Inter Bank Offered Rate (LIBOR). By using a multiple co-integration approach, the study found that there is a strong integration of the domestic call money market with the LIBOR. Though, the study found that there is a long-term co-movement between domestic foreign exchange market and LIBOR, it is not robust. This may be due to frequent intervention by the Central Bank in the foreign exchange market. As the Government securities market in India is still in the developing stage, it was not found to be integrated with the international market. Policy measures (or reforms) are necessary to increase integration of financial markets. This would help in reducing the arbitrage advantage in some specific segment of the financial markets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides perspectives on the latest developments and pertinent issues in the Indian financial sector in current times. The reforms initiated in the nineties in the financial sector have transformed the way financial markets and institutions function today. However, certain sectors like banking, and markets like the capital market have undergone sea changes. The research contributions in this book focus on the issues pertaining to such sectors like banking, NBFCs and the stock market. The opening up of financial markets and emergence of institutional investors have been a significant phenomenon in the Indian context. At this backdrop of increasing financial integration, the impact of financial liberalisation on the overall development of the sector, and how the global policies and events influence the Indian financial sector, are analysed in the book. The emergence of new regulations in the capital markets to instill more discipline and transparency, have also changed the way corporates take financing decisions. For example, regulatory authorities are continuously reviewing norms pertaining to issues like promoters’ shareholding owing to risks arising from excessive leverage and the linkages between financial intermediaries. Corporate governance, environmental aspects are some important additions in corporate financing norms in the recent past. The book incorporates a discussion on this, too. Apart from these, the book also has incorporated several aspects on an emerging concept called financial inclusion, its measurement and constraints to achieve the same. And finally, at the backdrop of the disruption created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact on the Indian capital market is also discussed. Contributions are based on rigorous empirical research and incorporate the perspectives of renowned academicians in the field of finance and financial economics across the country. Apart from the research community, this book will also be helpful for financial analysts working in the financial sector to have some idea about the current issues, the direction of research on those issues and different perspectives on them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The financial system of a country promotes savings by providing a wide variety of financial assets to the general public. Savings collected from the household sector are pooled together and allocated to various sectors of the economy for raising production levels. If the allocation of credit is judicious and socially equitable, it can help achieve the twin objectives of growth and social justice. An understanding of financial markets -- as part of the financial system -- is important as they are at the core of the transmission mechanism of monetary policy. In India, financial markets have been developed with a specific emphasis on increasing allocative efficiency of resources and promoting financial stability. Financial markets in India comprise, in the main, money market, Government securities market, capital market, corporate debt market, credit market, and foreign exchange market. Capital market plays a very important role in the development of financial system of any economy. It is a market where financial assets such as equities/debts are traded over a long period of time. Although the capital market in India has a long history, it remained on the periphery of the financial system for a long time. Various reforms undertaken since the early 1990s by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the Government have brought about a significant structural transformation in the Indian capital market. As a result, the Indian equity market has become modern and transparent. The equity market has witnessed widespread development in infrastructure and its functioning is comparable to international standards. It has seen significant increase in growth and diversity in composition since early 1990s.

Book excerpt: The aim of this study was to explore the integration between financial markets of India and Pakistan with the help of economic cooperation among them. Monthly data from the period of January 2002 to December 2012, was applied for this stud, the data of Monthly stock price index and Trade was used. The results highlighted that there is cointegration between the two stock markets in short run, and as we have used 11 years data it is not appropriate to conclude the long run relationship on this basis, although the Johansen Cointegration test proves the presence of two cointegrating vectors. Therefore we may conclude that there is direct cause and effect relationship between stock markets of India and Pakistan with respect to trade and if the hindrances in trade are removed the financial markets will perform much better than now. Trade between India and Pakistan is of great importance for the development of both the nations as well as the regional development. There are ample opportunities available for the investors as well, they can reduce risk and earn higher returns by investing in each other's markets.

Book excerpt: In recent decades, the foreign assets and liabilities of advanced economies have grown rapidly relative to GDP, with the increase in gross cross-holdings far exceeding changes in the size of net positions. Moreover, the portfolio equity and FDI categories have grown in importance relative to international debt stocks. This paper describes the broad trends in international financial integration for a sample of industrial countries and seeks to explain the cross-country and time-series variation in the size of international balance sheets. It also examines the behavior of the rates of return on foreign assets and liabilities, relating them to "market" returns.

Book excerpt: This book analyses the current state and potential of economic and financial integration in South Asia, which has emerged as one of the most dynamic regions of the world. Drawing on empirical research, the book looks at the degree of economic and financial integration in South Asia, which according to the World Bank includes the least integrated regions in the world, and explores the fundamental factors that drive integration amongst these countries. It also provides an overview of China’s role in South Asia’s financial integration and the interdependence of these economies for economic opportunities, macroeconomic and financial stability, jobs, sustainable growth, and inclusive development. Detailed and insightful, this book will be of great interest to investors and regional policymakers. It will also be of interest to researchers and students of economics, public and foreign policy, finance, international relations, and South Asia studies.

Book excerpt: India has much less exposure in the stock market integration literature until recently. Given India's fast-growing economic influence, research on the Indian stock market still seems to be inadequate and needs further investigation. The present study extends the existing stock market integration literature in the following ways. First, to provide further evidence, we examine the dynamic price linkages and interdependence between the stock market of India and that of the U.S., U.K., Japan, Singapore, Honk Kong, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, and China using daily stock price indices data covering the period January 2, 2001 to November 28, 2008. Second, this research examines examine the long-term and short-term dynamic relationship among the stock prices using Johansen-Juselius cointegration, vector error correction model and Granger causality test. Additionally, the innovation accounting analysis is conducted to further investigate the interactions between the Indian markets and others world markets. And lastly, the results from this research provide implications regarding international diversification and market efficiency that are important for investors and fund managers who are interested in investing in these markets. From the study, we can conclude that, Indian market is having a cointegrating relationship with US financial market. But relationship with other financial markets is not well established.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1990s, financial liberalization started in India, and it was thought that such reforms would increase economic growth. This argument formed part of the finance led industrialization hypothesis and although higher growth resulted, higher industrialization did not immediately. This book is the first study to comprehensively apply the flow of funds model for India. Using detailed data of the Indian economy, the whole financial sector is presented with associated policy simulation for India. The demand function is theoretically grounded in the Almost Ideal Demand System and cointegration techniques are adapted into the econometric methodology. The policy simulation experiments are conducted with a view to analyzing the delivery of loanable funds to sectors which are the most in need of poverty-reducing economic growth. The system-wide simulation as a result of interactions with disaggregated economic sectors will allow the analysis of a wide spectrum of policy effects on issues such as the determinant of interest rates, financial capital formulation, and the role of financial institutions, government debt and allocation of credit. India's Emerging Financial Market provides a thorough and rigorous analysis of policy responses in India and will be of interest to academics working on development economics in general and South Asia in particular.
