Book Synopsis Advanced Country Experiences with Capital Account Liberalization by : Age Bakker

This book was released on 2002-09-26 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the industrial countries established current account convertibility in the late1950s, they began to phase out their capital controls. Their efforts were slow and tentative at first, but built up considerable momentum by the 1980s as market-oriented economic policies gained popularity. This paper describes how national policymakers’ views of capital controls shifted over time, and how these controls have been closely related to regulation in other policy areas, such as banking and financial markets. As developing countries seek to liberalize their capital accounts to obtain the benefits of increased integration with the global economy, what lessons can be drawn from industrial countries’ diverse experiences with capital controls, and how can a country’s liberalization measures be sequenced to minimize disturbances to its exchange rate and monetary policies?
Book Synopsis Financial Integration, Liquidity and Exchange Rates by : Vittorio Grilli
Download or read book Financial Integration, Liquidity and Exchange Rates written by Vittorio Grilli and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a two-country extension of Lucas' (1988) work on the effects of cash-in-advance constraints in asset markets on the pricing of financial assets. The model is one where there exists some degree of separation between the goods markets and the asset markets and money is used for transactions in both markets. The main results of the paper are the following. First, the equilibrium level of the exchange rate depends on the share of money used for asset transactions: a greater share will correspond to a more appreciated exchange rate. Second, under uncertainty, liquidity effects deriving from stochastic shocks to bond creation lead to an "excess" volatility of nominal and real exchange rates even when the "fundamental" value of the exchange rate is constant. Third, capital controls in the form of taxes on foreign asset acquisitions tend to appreciate the exchange rate. Fourth, the maturity structure of the public debt affects the equilibrium exchange rate. In particular, a move towards a longer maturity structure will tend to depreciate the exchange rate

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews the experience with capital controls in industrial and developing countries, considers the policy issues raised when the effectiveness of capital controls diminishes, examines the medium-term benefits and costs of an open capital account, and analyzes the policy measures that could help sustain capital account convertibility. As the effectiveness of capital controls eroded more rapidly in the 1980s than in earlier periods, new constraints were placed on the formulation of stabilization and structural reform programs. However, experience suggests that certain macroeconomic, financial, and risk management policies would allow countries to attain the benefits of capital account convertibility and reduce the financial risks created by an open capital account.
Book Synopsis Portfolio Flows, Global Risk Aversion and Asset Prices in Emerging Markets by : Nasha Ananchotikul
Download or read book Portfolio Flows, Global Risk Aversion and Asset Prices in Emerging Markets written by Nasha Ananchotikul and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2014-08-19 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, portfolio flows to emerging markets have become increasingly large and volatile. Using weekly portfolio fund flows data, the paper finds that their short-run dynamics are driven mostly by global “push” factors. To what extent do these cross-border flows and global risk aversion drive asset volatility in emerging markets? We use a Dynamic Conditional Correlation (DCC) Multivariate GARCH framework to estimate the impact of portfolio flows and the VIX index on three asset prices, namely equity returns, bond yields and exchange rates, in 17 emerging economies. The analysis shows that global risk aversion has a significant impact on the volatility of asset prices, while the magnitude of that impact correlates with country characteristics, including financial openness, the exchange rate regime, as well as macroeconomic fundamentals such as inflation and the current account balance. In line with earlier literature, portfolio flows to emerging markets are also found to affect the level of asset prices, as was the case in particular during the global financial crisis.

Book Synopsis Financial Liberalization by : P. Arestis
Download or read book Financial Liberalization written by P. Arestis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-09-08 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The financial liberalization thesis emerged in the 1970s and has been of considerable importance ever since, not merely in terms of its theoretical influence but, perhaps more importantly, in terms of its impact on policy makers and policy debates. Although it has encountered increasing scepticism over the years, it nevertheless had a relatively early impact on development policy, which still continues unabated, through the work of the IMF and the World Bank. The latter two institutions, perhaps in their traditional role as promoters of what were claimed to be free market conditions, were keen to encourage financial liberalization policies as part of more general reforms or stabilization programmes. This book explores what we have learned from the vast experience of the theoretical and policy aspects of the financial liberalization.
Book Synopsis International Financial Issues in the Pacific Rim by : Takatoshi Ito
Download or read book International Financial Issues in the Pacific Rim written by Takatoshi Ito and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The imbalanced, yet mutually beneficial, trading relationship between the United States and Asia has long been one of international finance’s most perplexing mysteries. Although the United States continues to post a substantial trade deficit—and China reaps the benefits of a surplus—the dollar has yet to sink in the face of ever-increasing account disparities. International Financial Issues in the Pacific Rim explains why the United States enjoys a seemingly symbiotic relationship with its trading partners despite stark inequities in the trade balance, especially with Asia. This timely and well-informed study also debunks the assumed link between economic openness and low inflation in the region, identifies the serious gap between academic and private-sector researchers’ understanding of exchange rate volatility, and analyzes the liberalization of Asian capital accounts. International Financial Issues in the Pacific Rim will have broad implications for global trade and economic policy issues in Asia and beyond.

Book Synopsis Economic Adjustment and Exchange Rates in Developing Countries by : Sebastian Edwards
Download or read book Economic Adjustment and Exchange Rates in Developing Countries written by Sebastian Edwards and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of the attention paid exchange rates in recent economic debates on developing countries, relatively few studies have systematically analyzed in detail the various ramifications of exchange rate policy in these countries. In this new volume from the National Bureau of Economic Research, leading economists use rigorous models to tackle various exchange rate issues, while also illuminating policy implications that emerge from their analyses. The volume, divided into four main sections, addresses: the role of exchange rates in stabilization programs and the adjustment process; the importance of exchange rate policy during liberalization reform in developing countries; exchange rate problems relevant and unique to developing countries, illustrated by case studies; and the problems defining, measuring, and identifying determinants of real exchange rates. Authors of individual papers examine the relation between commercial policies and exchange rates, the role of exchange rate policy in stabilization programs, the effectiveness of devaluations as a policy tool, and the interaction between exchange rate terms of trade an capital flow. This research will not only prove crucial to our understanding of the role of exchange rates in developing countries, but will clearly set the standard for future work in the field.
Book Synopsis Liberalization, Financial Instability and Economic Development by : Yılmaz Akyüz
Download or read book Liberalization, Financial Instability and Economic Development written by Yılmaz Akyüz and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weighing up the costs and benefits of economic interdependence in a finance-driven world, this book argues that globalization, understood and promoted as absolute freedom for all forms of capital, has been oversold to the Global South, and that the South should be as selective about globalization as the North. ‘Liberalization, Financial Instability and Economic Development’ challenges the orthodoxy on the link between financial deepening and economic growth, as well as that between the efficiency of financial markets and the benefits of liberalization. Ultimately, the author urges developing countries to control capital flows and asset bubbles, preventing financial fragility and crises, and recommends regional policy options for managing capital flows and exchange rates.
