Book Synopsis Financial Access and Stability by : The World Bank
Download or read book Financial Access and Stability written by The World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2011-09-21 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) have been recovering from the global financial crisis, but the recent political turmoil has interrupted the pace of credit and output recovery in many countries. The political turmoil in the MENA region reveals deep-seated frustrations and a sense of political, social, and economic exclusion, especially among the youth. The relatively weak growth performance reflects a combination of insufficient reforms and weak reform implementation, including financial sector reforms. The structural weaknesses of financial sectors imply that access to finance may remain restricted even with a full recovery of credit activity. Therefore, the region s countries face an ambitious reform agenda to revert two decades of relatively poor performance of output and employment growth. Financial development should be a central component of the region s growth agenda. This study reviews the region s financial systems, the severity of the limitations on access to finance, and the main factors behind such limitations. It goes on to provide a road map for expanding access and preserving financial stability.

Book Synopsis Arab Countries in Transition - An Update on Economic Outlook and Key Challenges by : International Monetary Fund
Download or read book Arab Countries in Transition - An Update on Economic Outlook and Key Challenges written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite uneven progress, there are early signs of improvement and macroeconomic stabilization in some Arab Countries in Transition (ACTs). 1 However, persistently weak growth and subdued private investment amid heightened regional insecurity continue to weigh on the task of reducing unemployment. This calls for accelerated reform efforts by the authorities to achieve higher, more inclusive, and more private sector-led growth, supported by external partners. In addition, mobilizing affordable external financing could help boost well-implemented public investment and provide a short-term impetus to growth and employment, thereby stabilizing difficult socio-political conditions on the ground and providing space for deeper structural reforms.
Book Synopsis The Economic Development of the United Arab Emirates (RLE Economy of Middle East) by : Ragaei el Mallakh
Download or read book The Economic Development of the United Arab Emirates (RLE Economy of Middle East) written by Ragaei el Mallakh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1970s the oil producing countries of the Gulf have become a focus of intense interest worldwide. Most of this interest has centred on the oil giants, Saudi Arabia, Iran, even Iraq and Kuwait. Yet the United Arab Emirates is also among the largest producers, on a par with Kuwait, Nigeria and Libya, with reserves greater than the USA. Given its high economic growth rate, the UAE is an excellent laboratory in which to test and evaluate policies and programmes to effect rapid economic development. The international stature of the UAE far exceeds what its physical size, population and breadth of resources would seem to indicate. As a member of OPEC, the UAE has played a vital role within that body’s ‘price moderates’. With one of the world’s highest per capita incomes and with ambitious development efforts under way, the UAE, not surprisingly, has become a major market for capital and consumer goods, involving substantial foreign services, banking, business and industry. Based on more than a decade of study, on-site research and interviews with key figures, this book – which mixes the practical with the academic approach – will prove of great value to Middle Eastern and development specialists, students and to the international business and financial communities. First published in 1981.

Book Synopsis The Composition and Distribution of Financial Assistance From Arab Countries and Arab Regional Institutions by : International Monetary Fund
Download or read book The Composition and Distribution of Financial Assistance From Arab Countries and Arab Regional Institutions written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1990-07-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the volume and distribution of concessional and nonconcessional financial flows from Arab countries, and aid agencies, and regional institutions to developing countries. Arab financial assistance increased very rapidly from 1973 to 1980 in line with the rapid growth in oil revenues. Essentially because of the softer oil market, this trend was reversed in the 1980s. Nonetheless, the Arab contributions as a share of GNPs remain by far the most generous among the major donor groups. Arab recipient countries received nearly 62 percent of total Arab financial assistance. Together with large flows of workers’ remittances, this assistance accelerated their economic development beyond what would have been otherwise possible.

Book Synopsis Arab Industrial Integration (RLE Economy of Middle East) by : Elias T. Ghantus
Download or read book Arab Industrial Integration (RLE Economy of Middle East) written by Elias T. Ghantus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arab countries are increasingly recognising their importance as a regional economic grouping. Given the highly skewed distribution of natural, human and financial resources, the course of economic development in the Arab countries seems to be interrelated. Through pooling their resources and markets these countries will not only be able to optimise investment decisions but also broaden the potential for development. This book argues that economic integration is not merely a question of reducing or eliminating discriminatory measures, as emphasised in previous integration attempts. It calls rather for a positive action based on a regional investment strategy which coordinates production programmes, to reap the benefits of specialisation and scale. The book focuses on past industrialisation efforts in the Arab countries and examines the emerging patterns of industrial growth. A pioneering attempt is made to identify specific industries whose economic viability can be enhanced by conceiving them on a regional basis. The book concludes by framing a strategy for an integrated industrial development in the Arab region. First published in 1982.
