The number of students attending colleges and universities has increased over the decades but so too has the expense of going to college. The dissertation report presented here attempts to look at the retention rates of colleges and universities and how forms of financial gift aid may impact the retention rate of college students. Participants for this study included all public and private colleges and universities who award at least a bachelor’s degree and receive federal financial aid. These schools are required to submit information to the National Center for Educational Statistics and an archival database was used to pull financial aid and student enrollment information for each of these schools. Using a correlational predictive design, these data were examined to see if student retention rates can be predicted by the average amount of federal, state, and institutional grant and gift aid awarded per new incoming student and if one form of aid is more predictive than the others.

The study sought to answer the following research question: 1. To what degree are student factors--high school GPA, ethnicity, gender, first generation higher institution student status, SAT or ACT scores, socioeconomic status (SES), and financial aid eligibility (grants, loans, federal aid, scholarships)--related to first year retention at a college/university? This study used descriptive and logistic regression analyses from the Fall 2012-2013 school year data provided by the public university in Texas. Contributing factors (High School GPA, ethnicity, gender, first generation college student status, SAT or ACT scores, socioeconomic status (SES), and financial aid eligibility (grants, loans, federal aid, scholarships) were analyzed to determine the best predictor(s) of first year student retention for the Fall 2013-2014 school year at the public university. The study revealed that of the sample analyzed, 68.8% of the students were retained for the Fall 2013-2014 school year while the other 31.2% were not retained. The logistic regression revealed financial aid (grants, loans, scholarships) to be the most predictive variable for the retention of first year higher education students in 2013-2014.

Book excerpt: This study sought to determine which demographic variables (student gender, age, race, family income, dependency status, and parental level of educational attainment) best predict total accrued federal student loan debt for undergraduate degree recipients attending a four-year public Midwestern United States research university. The sample consisted of 1,880 first-time enrolled, full-time undergraduate students who matriculated in August 2009 and borrowed their first federal student loan during the first year of enrollment. Data was obtained from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), institutional federal student loan, enrollment, and graduation data and analyzed through the graduating class of May 2015. A multiple regression analysis for research question one generated a four-factor model: Family Income, Minority Status, Father’s Level and Mother’s Level of Educational Attainment were significant predictors of total accrued federal student loan debt upon graduation. A logistic regression analysis generated three models based on total accrued federal student loan debt upon graduation above/below $10,000, $20,000, and $30,000. The $10,000 model indicated one significant predictor, Mother’s Level of Educational Attainment. The $20,000 model indicated two significant predictors, Family Income and Mother’s Level of Educational Attainment. The $30,000 model indicated three significant predictors, Family Income, Minority Status, and Father’s Level of Educational Attainment. Research question two examined differences in total federal student loan debt between four-year or less and more than four-year undergraduate degree completers. An independent samples t-test analysis revealed a significant difference in total accrued federal student loan debt for degree completion within a four-year time frame. Research question three examined differences between undergraduate degree completers and non-completers in the amount of federal student loans borrowed during each enrollment year and in total. An independent samples t-test analysis revealed that degree completers borrowed significantly less federal student loans than non-completers during year one of enrollment, but significantly more in years three, four, and five. The federal student loan total borrowed between degree completers and degree non-completers was also significant. An ANCOVA analysis revealed that degree completers borrowed significantly more federal student loans than non-completers when controlling for number of years enrolled. Practice and policy implications and recommendations regarding the administration of non-repayable financial aid (scholarships and grants), individualized financial aid/student loan advising/counseling, college curricular initiatives, institutional/federal financial aid processes, and student retention are provided.

Book excerpt: Reaching enrollment goals has always been challenging but even more so in this current environment of increased competition and reductions in higher education funding. Enrollment managers need tools that help predict enrollment but also help understand how and if financial aid can be used to influence a student's decision to attend and to persist at the same institution. This study assesses the predictive ability of different types of financial aid on choice and retention at a public 4-year university. Logistic regression was the statistical method used in the analysis, and the findings suggest that some types of financial aid increase the odds of both attending and retaining. The study also revealed that group differences exist for both income and race. Institutional scholarships and government grants significantly and positively influenced both choice and retention for almost all racial and income groups, but some groups of students did not respond positively to institutional grants. Additionally, Black students were negatively influenced by increases in student loans, but Hispanic students were positively influenced by increases in student loans. The findings in part match other similar studies and in part differ. In this respect, this study provides proof of the importance of institutions conducting their own similar research in order to increase enrollment through financial aid leveraging.

Online learners are entering college with varied backgrounds, demographics, and prior experience, yet most institutions are not differentiating the first-year programs for their incoming students with previous college-level experience. The following research used a binomial logistic regression analysis to explore existing, archival data to determine whether college transfer credit and a student success course can predict short- or long-term online student retention. This correlational study evaluated a randomized sample of 3,000 students who took a student success course and transferred in fewer than 60 credit hours and evaluated whether the success course could predict their retention at the university for the subsequent term (short-term) or through current enrollment (long-term). Results from the quantitative study showed that both predictor variables were statistically significant as predictors of student retention, both in the short- and long-term.

Book excerpt: Student retention and success literature has revealed a multitude of variables exist that predict retention and academic performance of students during freshmen year. An innovative tool has recently been developed with the purpose of institutional improvement in mind, called the National Survey of Student Engagement. The psychometric properties have been scrutinized and reveal that this survey is a practical instrument to use for institutional improvement purposes. One aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the following variables and student retention: quality of relationships, academic advising, and satisfaction (in terms of with educational experience and attending the same institution). Second, the relationship between the subsequent variables and GPA was assessed: tutoring, internship/co-op experience, work, satisfaction (with educational experience), meetings with faculty, and projected grade index (PGI). Further, this study attempted to address the limitation of previous research of focusing only on retention or success, by identifying the influence of a variety of variables on both retention and academic performance variables all in one study. Results showed a significant influence of the quality of relationships, and satisfaction (with educational experience and attending the same institution) variables on retention. In addition, all of the following variables successfully predicted GPA: tutoring, work, satisfaction with educational experience, meetings with faculty and PGI.
