Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our world is experiencing increasingly complex social and environmental challenges. The prevailing business models and, to some extent, capitalism per se, are frequently blamed for these problems due to their neglect of social and environmental values in favour of financial returns. Within this context, social finance has attracted the attention of governments, organizations, entrepreneurs, and researchers as a means of mobilizing resources and innovation with the goal of establishing effective long-term solutions. This edited collection summarizes, discusses, and analyzes new innovative trends in social finance. It features contributions that aim to highlight emerging trends (products, tools, and processes) in social finance, present a series of case studies related to the development, deployment, and scaling of social finance innovations, offer an understanding of how non-economic externalities are being incorporated, managed, and assessed in recent innovations, reveal the disruptive potential of social finance innovations by analyzing how they are redefining mainstream finance, analyze the scales – of operation and impact – of different innovations, and explore the complex relationship between social finance and social innovation. Featuring contributions from both the research and practitioner community as well as policy actors, the book provides more than a snapshot of the current social finance field by specifically highlighting the major challenges and difficulties that require the urgent attention of policymakers and social entrepreneurs.

Changing attitudes to wealth, growing social need and innovations in finance are creating a revolution in how we give, aided and sometimes abetted by governments. Mapping the changes, Christopher Carnie focuses on high-value philanthropists – people and foundations as ‘major donors’ – investing or donating €25,000 upwards. Designed to help people find their way around the sector, this book includes interviews with philanthropists, advisers and fundraisers, and provides practical insider knowledge to access donors and donor information. Complete with a substantial appendix of sources, this book helps readers understand the revolution in philanthropy in Europe and provides market information for anyone building strategies for fundraising or philanthropy.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Middle- and South America, grade: 5.75/6.00, University of Geneva (GRADUATE INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL AND DEVELOPMENT STUDIES ), course: Overindebtedness in microfinance, language: English, abstract: Originally celebrated as a poverty alleviation tool which is financially sustainable, microfinance is experiencing worrying developments, such as deterioration of loan portfolios, growing commercialization and increasing public criticism due to exaggerated profits. Overindebtedness is one of the most worrying trends, as it has negative effects on the loan beneficiaries and in the same time it threatens the very existence of the sector. This field research analyses from an empirical perspective the causes and effects of overindebtedness in the specific case of the clientele of Financiera CREAR Arequipa S.A. in Lima Norte, Peru. It was found that overindebtedness is generated by a mix of causes related to the increased competition between microfinance institutions and to the specific behaviours of clients confronted with an abundant credit offer. This produces a series of effects at institutional and client levels, which can be described as institutional cannibalization, client forced‐feeding, desperate borrowing and loan bicycling.
