Book Synopsis The Garrison State by : Tan Tai Yong
Download or read book The Garrison State written by Tan Tai Yong and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2005-05 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the Mutiny of 1857, various factors impelled the British to turn to the province of Punjab in north-western India as the principal recruiting ground for the Indian Army. This book examines the processes by which the politics and political economy of colonial Punjab was militarised by the province`s position as the `sword arm` of the Raj. The militarisation of the administration in the Punjab was characterised by a conjunction of the military, civil and political authorities. This led to the emergence of a uniquely civil-military regime, a phenomenon that was not replicated anywhere else in British India, indeed in the Empire. Analysing these events, this book: - Studies the manner in which the Punjab became the main recruiting ground for the Indian Army - Looks at how certain districts were selected for military recruitment, and the factors motivating the `military classes` among the Punjabis to join the Army - Discusses the effects of the First World War on the recruitment process in the Punjab - Highlights the role the civil-military regime played in the politics of the Punjab, its survival after the Second World War and the manner in which it handled the demand for Pakistan and the subsequent partitioning of the province.

Book Synopsis Frontiers of Development Economics by : Gerald M. Meier
Download or read book Frontiers of Development Economics written by Gerald M. Meier and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With contributions from 35 leading economists, this forward-looking book explores the future of development economics against the background of the past half-century of development thought and practice. Outstanding representatives of the past two generations of development economists assess development thinking at the turn of the century and look to the unsettled questions confronting the next generation. The volume offers a thorough analysis of the broad range of issues involved in development economics, and it is especially timely in its critique of what is needed in development theory and policy to reduce poverty. An overriding issue is whether in the future 'development economics' is to be regarded simply as applied economics or whether the nature and scope of development economics will constitute a need for a special development theory to supplement general economic theory.'Frontiers of Development Economics' is an ideal reference for all those working in the international development community.
Book Synopsis Agrarian Reform as Unfinished Business by : Wolf Isaac Ladejinsky
Download or read book Agrarian Reform as Unfinished Business written by Wolf Isaac Ladejinsky and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1977 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of 62 essays on agrarian reform in Asia is presented. Based on field observations, Ladejinsky's works reflect his concern with the redistribution of land to submarginal farmers, tenants, sharecroppers, and landless laborers. The papers express Ladejinski's belief that the role of Asia in establishing the dominance of democracy over Communism is crucial and that the welfare of the Asian people will play a definitive role in the outcome; that agricultural progress is basic to economic development and welfare; that the redistribution of land to the mass of cultivators or the secure land tenure, with adequate water supplies and technical assistance at reasonable rents for tenants, is the best way to provide incentives for agricultural development; that basic agrarian reform is inevitable and revolutionary in character; that political leadership is necessary for the achievement of agrarian reform and the maintenance of stability; and that assistance from Western nations is vital. Two official documents leading to land reform in post-World War II Japan, a chronological bibliography of Ladejinsky, and a list of depository libraries for the Ladejinsky papers are appended.

Book Synopsis Cholera Outbreaks by : G. Balakrish Nair
Download or read book Cholera Outbreaks written by G. Balakrish Nair and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most feared attribute of the human pathogen Vibrio cholerae is its ability to cause outbreaks that spread like wildfire, completely overwhelming public health systems and causing widespread suffering and death. This volume starts with a description of the contrasting patterns of outbreaks caused by the classical and El Tor biotypes of V. cholerae. Subsequent chapters examine cholera outbreaks in detail, including possible sources of infection and molecular epidemiology on three different continents, the emergence of new clones through the bactericidal selection process of lytic cholera phages, the circulation and transmission of clones of the pathogen during outbreaks and novel approaches to modeling cholera outbreaks. A further contribution deals with the application of the genomic sciences to trace the spread of cholera epidemics and how this information can be used to control cholera outbreaks. The book closes with an analysis of the potential use of killed oral cholera vaccines to stop the spread of cholera outbreaks.

Book Synopsis Green Nanoparticles by : Jayanta Kumar Patra
Download or read book Green Nanoparticles written by Jayanta Kumar Patra and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanotechnology is the application of science to control matter at the molecular level. It has become one of the most promising applied technologies in all areas of science. Nanoparticles have multi-functional properties and have created very interesting applications in various fields such as medicine, nutrition, bioenergy, agriculture and the environment. But the biogenic syntheses of monodispersed nanoparticles with specific sizes and shapes have been a challenge in biomaterial science. Nanoparticles are of great interest due to their extremely small size and large surface-to-volume ratio, which lead to both chemical and physical differences in their properties (e.g., mechanical properties, biological and sterical properties, catalytic activity, thermal and electrical conductivity, optical absorption and melting point) compared to bulk of the same chemical composition. Recently, however, synthesizing metal nanoparticles using green technology via microorganisms, plants, viruses, and so on, has been extensively studied and has become recognized as a green and efficient way for further exploiting biological systems as convenient nanofactories. Thus the biological synthesis of nanoparticles is increasingly regarded as a rapid, ecofriendly, and easily scaled-up technology. Today researchers are developing new techniques and materials using nanotechnology that may be suitable for plants to boost their native functions. Recently, biological nanoparticles were found to be more pharmacologically active than physico-chemically synthesized nanoparticles. Various applications of biosynthesized nanoparticles have been discovered, especially in the field of biomedical research, such as applications to specific delivery of drugs, use for tumor detection, angiogenesis, genetic disease and genetic disorder diagnosis, photoimaging, and photothermal therapy. Further, iron oxide nanoparticles have been applied to cancer therapy, hyperthermia, drug delivery, tissue repair, cell labeling, targeting and immunoassays, detoxification of biological fluids, magnetic resonance imaging, and magnetically responsive drug delivery therapy. Nanoparticle synthesis for plant byproducts for biomedical applications has vast potential. This book offers researchers in plant science and biomedicine the latest research and opportunity to develop new tools for the synthesis of environmentally friendly and cost-effective nanoparticles for applications in biomedicine as well as other various fields.
