Book excerpt: Adapt or die. There is no other choice. Black and white no longer exist in a world swirling with shades of gray. To survive the post-apocalyptic nightmare they face, Josh Standing must find a way to stitch his frayed family back together. But with the lives of his wife and kids on the line, Josh must finally face the truth of this new reality—he may not be able to save everyone. The professor is another story. The man’s only concern is continuing his research, regardless of the cost to those protecting him. However, keeping the intelligent and irritating man alive is vital to the future because he holds the key to a cure that just might counter the dark matter madness. Maxine Standing won’t let anything come between her and the tiny hope offered for humanity’s brighter future. Sometimes compromise is crucial when civilization collapses, and Maxine will do whatever it takes to follow her husband’s example—even if it means facing a tyrant. But dark matter isn’t the only hurricane bearing down on the coast as the Standings pursue shelter from the Harbormaster’s crazed reach. Now they have one shot at restoring order to ensure a new tomorrow. And before the sun rises, someone will make the greatest sacrifice.

Book excerpt: Mutually assured destruction has led to decades of peace between humanity and the Trisolarans, but a new force is awakening and this delicate balance can no longer hold... Half a century after the Doomsday Battle, the uneasy balance of Dark Forest Deterrence keeps the Trisolaran invaders at bay. Earth enjoys unprecedented prosperity due to the infusion of Trisolaran knowledge. With human science advancing daily and the Trisolarans adopting Earth culture, it seems that the two civilizations will soon be able to co-exist peacefully as equals without the terrible threat of mutually assured annihilation. But the peace has also made humanity complacent. Cheng Xin, an aerospace engineer from the early twenty-first century, awakens from hibernation in this new age. She brings with her knowledge of a long-forgotten program dating from the beginning of the Trisolar Crisis, and her very presence may upset the delicate balance between two worlds. Will humanity reach for the stars or die in its cradle? Death's End is the New York Times bestselling conclusion to Cixin Liu's tour-de-force series that began with The Three-Body Problem. Download or read book Final Days written by Susan Orpett Long and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Grounded in ethnographic data, the book offers an examination of how policy and meaning frame the choices Japanese make about how to die. As an essay in descriptive bioethics, it engages an extensive literature in the social sciences and bioethics to examine some of the answers people have constructed to end-of-life issues. Like their counterparts in other postindustrial societies, Japanese find no simple way of handling situations such as disclosure of diagnosis, discontinuing or withholding treatment, organ donation, euthanasia, and hospice. Through interviews and case studies in hospitals and homes, Susan Orpett Long offers a window on the ways in which "ordinary" people respond to serious illness and the process of dying."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book The Final Rapture written by Doc Marquis and published by Charisma Media. This book was released on 2017 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end is just the beginning. The rapture is one of the simplest concepts found in the Holy Bible, yet there is a great amount of confusion and division concerning whether the next and final rapture will occur before the Tribulation, in the middle of the Tribulation, or after the Tribulation. Doc Marquis settles the question once and for all in The Final Rapture. Marquis dissects specific prophecies to show how close we truly are to the final rapture. He uses information from the Book of Revelation to alert those who are in danger of missing it--those who may still be on Earth during the Tribulation Period--to what they must live through if they are still here.
Download or read book Washington's End written by Jonathan Horn and published by Scribner. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular historian and former White House speechwriter Jonathan Horn “provides a captivating and enlightening look at George Washington’s post-presidential life and the politically divided country that was part of his legacy” (New York Journal of Books). Beginning where most biographies of George Washington leave off, Washington’s End opens with the first president exiting office after eight years and entering what would become the most bewildering stage of his life. Embittered by partisan criticism and eager to return to his farm, Washington assumed a role for which there was no precedent at a time when the kings across the ocean yielded their crowns only upon losing their heads. In a different sense, Washington would lose his head, too. In this riveting read, bestselling author Jonathan Horn reveals that the quest to surrender power proved more difficult than Washington imagined and brought his life to an end he never expected. The statesman who had staked his legacy on withdrawing from public life would feud with his successors and find himself drawn back into military command. The patriarch who had dedicated his life to uniting his country would leave his name to a new capital city destined to become synonymous with political divisions. A “movable feast of a book” (Jay Winik, New York Times bestselling author of 1944), immaculately researched, and powerfully told through the eyes not only of Washington but also of his family members, friends, and foes, Washington’s End is “an outstanding biographical work on one of America’s most prominent leaders (Library Journal).
Book Synopsis The End of Final Causes in Biology by : Lucas John Mix
Download or read book The End of Final Causes in Biology written by Lucas John Mix and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-31 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a straightforward introduction to teleology in biology, the work it did and the work it can do. Informed by history and philosophy, it focuses on scientific concerns. Seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth century biologists proposed a menagerie of biological “actors” to explain power without appealing to Aristotelian vegetable souls and final causes. Three constraints on teleology narrowed the field, selecting among the various actors as they mutated and recombined. Methodological naturalism, local adaptation, and blind chance each represent a significant philosophical advance in biology. Kant, Darwin, and the Modern Synthesis provided a new teleology, grounded in natural selection, an etiological recursion of form and function, and the details of carbon chemistry on Earth. They naturalized teleology, but they also finalized nature, shifting conceptions about the world and science. Understanding these links – historical, philosophical, and theoretical – sets the stage for new work moving forward.

Book Synopsis Are We Living in the End Times or Final Days? by : Michael Scantlebury
Download or read book Are We Living in the End Times or Final Days? written by Michael Scantlebury and published by Word Alive Press. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whenever we hear about the "end-times" or the "last days," it conjures up all kinds of images in our minds. We may think of the universe blowing up with the largest flame imaginable, ushering in a new heaven and a new earth. We have presupposed in the body of Christ that the righteous will be raptured away before all of this occurs, leaving the world to face a massive fire of destruction. Upon hearing Christians mention the last days, many just assume they're referring to the end of time, and the end of the world. But the attentive Bible student will ask, "The last days of what?" It seems obvious to me that the text is referring to the end of the Old Covenant-Temple aeon/age. When you read the New Testament through this lenses, all I can say is, "Wow!" It makes a significant difference when you read the Scriptures with the realization that the Bible was written for you, not to you. We need to also understand that "time of the end" and the "end of time" are not one and the same. The Bible teaches about the "time of the end," but nothing is taught about an "end of time."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Outstanding Publication Award, Section on Aging and the Life Course, American Sociological Association Senior citizens from all walks of life face a gauntlet of physical, psychological, and social hurdles. But do the disadvantages some people accumulate over the course of their lives make their final years especially difficult? Or does the quality of life among poor and affluent seniors converge at some point? The End Game investigates whether persistent socioeconomic, racial, and gender divisions in America create inequalities that structure the lives of the elderly. “Avoiding reductionist frameworks and showing the hugely varying lifestyles of Californian seniors, The End Game poses a profound question: how can provision of services for the elderly cater for individual circumstances and not merely treat the aged as one grey block? Abramson eloquently and comprehensively expounds this complex question.” —Michael Warren, LSE Review of Books “The author’s approach situates inequality experienced by older Americans in a real world context and links culture, social life, biological life, and structural disparities in ways that allow readers to understand the intersectionality of diversity imbued in the lives of older Americans...Abramson opens a window into the reality of old age, the importance of culture and the impact it has on shared/prior experiences, and the inequalities that structure them.” —A. L. Lewis, Choice
