Book excerpt: Frederic Raphael's The Glittering Prizes and its sequel, Fame and Fortune, were widely acclaimed for their dazzling and moving portrait of an era and a generation. Now, in Final Demands, the culminating volume in the trilogy, writer Adam Morris and his high-flying Cambridge contemporaries find themselves at the peak of influence and success as New Labour and the Blair boom years take them high on the slippery pole of success. At the same time, they begin to fear the moment when seniority will render them superfluous. Adam, as astringent as ever, continues to stand centre stage, but his other contemporaries too play their vivid and energetic parts. Alan Parks still commands the nation's screens and microphones; movie director Mike Clode continues to pursue the bitch goddess Success; Joyce Hadleigh realises an unlikely ambition when she becomes 'joined at the hype' with Samuel Marcus Cohen, English literature's Nobel laureate-in-waiting. The younger generation too is growing into unpredictable potency. When he accepts a teaching gig In Los Angeles, Adam finds himself confronting his beautiful daughter Rachel's complex emotional life. And then, back in London, on Boxing Day, he learns that his son Tom's wife, Juliana - granddaughter of a Nazi business man - has come to a startling decision. When he and Juliana call to deliver a belated Christmas present to the film producer Bruno Laszlo, comedy and tragedy collide in a cruelly comic climax.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the representative macro-econometric models and their applications for the Japanese economy in different development stages throughout postwar years up to the present. It presents a summary of three types of macro-econometric models and analyses: ? Social accounting analyses of national income and related indices ? following the tradition of C Clark, S Kuznets, R Stone and World Bank Development Reports; ? Inter-industrial and inter-regional analyses of the Japanese economy a la W Leontief and the CGE (computable general equilibrium) type of applications to Comprehensive Development Plans; ? Macro-econometric model building for the Japanese economy and its applications with a survey of various models in Japan including the historic Osaka University ISER (Institute of Social and Economic Research) model and present day Government models. As many Asian economies are going through the stages of development that Japan has experienced for the past few decades, to them and other developing countries this book will be extremely relevant as a reference for years to come.

Book excerpt: This book explores new approaches to the measurement and interpretation of the linkages between economic activity flows and income flows in urban and regional economies and new ways to explore the importance of regional economic structure in development. The book combines theoretical contributions, chapters that focus on the construction and interpretation of new social accounting systems and a variety of empirical applications. These applications encompass community-level income distribution impacts, assessments of income distribution problems in Brazil, interregional impacts of unexpected events in Japan, welfare reform in the US and structural change in Chinese metropolitan economies. One of the special features of the book is the use and application of a wide variety of models - demo-economic, social accounting, interregional computable general equilibrium - employed at a variety of spatial scales.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of writings provides the only comprehensive introduction to the input-output model for which Leontief was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1973. The structural approach to economics developed by Leontief, and known as input-output analysis, paved the way for the transformation of economics into a truly empirical discipline that could utilize modern data processing technology. This thoroughly revised second edition includes twenty essays--twelve of which are new to this edition--that reflect the past developments and the present state of the field. Beginning with an introductory chapter, the book leads the reader into an understanding of the input-output approach--not only as formal theory but also as a research strategy and powerful tool for dealing with a complex modern economy.

Book excerpt: To write everything about nothing, or to write nothing about everything: this is the problem. (Anonym, circa 1996-97) The first idea to write a book on M athematical Economics, more or less ordered in a historical sequence, occurred to me in 1995, when I was asked, by Istituto delta Enciclopedia Italiana, to write the entry "Storia dell'economia 1 2 matematica" , for the collective work "Storia deI XX Secolo". I thought that it would be interesting to elaborate on the text presented to the editors, to turn it into a book aiming at giving a panorama of what, in my opinion, are the main 20th century contributions to mathematical eco nomics. Of course, only a narrow set of the contributions made by economic theorists could be included, both for space limitations and necessity, because 3 of the limited competence of any single author. For instance, I have paid very limited attention to what is now called Macroeconomics, and also to Game Theory, which actually has grown so much as to acquire scientific in dependence as a living branch of applied mathematics. For the same reason, I have also left completely untouched such fields as Mathematical Finance, Public Economics, Theory of Taxation, etc. I have always based my presentation on published material only, assuming that what is contained in working papers still waits to be confirmed, possibly in the first years of the 21th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Korea’s experience of rapid economic growth represents both hope and a challenge to many developing countries. The conventional wisdom inside and outside Korea has been that the government’s policies such as export promotion, industrial targeting, and so on, made the rapid growth possible. This book investigates the effects of the policies and concludes that Korea’s growth experience does not corroborate the view. Rather, it points to the tremendous growth in size of the world market as an important factor that has been overlooked in the discussion of nations’ economic growth in the post-World War II era. It was roughly 100 times bigger in the early 1960s than it was in the middle of the First Industrial Revolution. The potential "gains from trade" were that much greater; while the Korean economy had not been realizing the potential gains, it began to as soon as a major reform of the foreign exchange system in 1961 removed the impediments to foreign trade. Explosive export expansion and rapid growth of the economy immediately followed. The "Korean Miracle" may be better understood as a process whereby the economy realized its huge potential.
