Sometimes it's your deepest desire. After a thousand years of fighting, the war between the alien factions is coming to a conclusion. The outcome will determine the fate of the world. And while Alex and Dracul fight for supremacy, Annika has her own secret agenda. Craig Jefferson is a vice cop who has been thrown into the surreal world where alien vampires are locked in a struggle to dominate his planet. After witnessing the massacre at Club Lux, he has thrown his lot in with Alex's crew, determined to help save his species. His decision is bolstered by his inexplicable attraction to one of Dracul's victims. The shy, abused man is not his usual type, but keeping him safe becomes Craig's mission. Alun survived centuries of abuse, only to find himself a different kind of captive. Being useful and staying on the sidelines is the only way he knows. The re-emergence of his faith, as well as a surprising attraction to an American cop, is giving him the courage to break free of his past and his present. If only he could save his son from Dracul, he would see a future for himself once again. Craig and Alun are mere cogs in the battle gearing up, but they are determined to play a role, even as they tentatively explore a life together.

In this propulsive novel, featuring a shabby but oracular Sheep Man, one of the most idiosyncratically brilliant writers at work today fuses together science fiction, the hardboiled thriller, and white-hot satire.

Book Synopsis American Aloha by : Heather A. Diamond
Download or read book American Aloha written by Heather A. Diamond and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2008-06-03 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the 1989 Smithsonian Folklife Festival, throngs of visitors gathered on the National Mall to celebrate Hawai‘i’s multicultural heritage through its traditional arts. The "edu-tainment" spectacle revealed a richly complex Hawai‘i few tourists ever see and one never before or since replicated in a national space. The program was restaged a year later in Honolulu for a local audience and subsequently inspired several spin-offs in Hawai‘i. In both Washington, D.C., and Honolulu, the program instigated a new paradigm for cultural representation. Based on archival research and extensive interviews with festival organizers and participants, this innovative cross-disciplinary study uncovers the behind-the-scenes negotiations and processes that inform the national spectacle of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Intersecting the fields of museum studies, folklore studies, Hawaiian studies, performance studies, cultural studies, and American studies, American Aloha supplies a nuanced analysis of how the carefully crafted staging of Hawai‘i’s cultural diversity was used to serve a national narrative of utopian multiculturalism—one that collapsed social inequities and tensions, masked colonial history, and subordinated indigenous politics—while empowering Hawai‘i’s traditional artists and providing a model for cultural tourism that has had long-lasting effects. Heather Diamond deftly positions the 1989 program within a history of institutional intervention in the traditional arts of Hawai‘i’s ethnic groups as well as in relation to local cultural revivals and the tourist industry. By tracing the planning, fieldwork, site design, performance, and aftermath stages of the program, she examines the uneven processes through which local culture is transformed into national culture and raises questions about the stakes involved in cultural tourism for both culture bearers and culture brokers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A funny and personal portrait of the comedian who became the headline-making, ground-breaking star of The Colbert Report. "My name is Stephen Colbert, but I actually play someone on television named Stephen Colbert, who looks like me and talks like me, but who says things with a straight face [that] he doesn't mean."—Stephen Colbert No other comedian can generate headlines today the way Stephen Colbert can. With his appearance at a Congressional hearing, his rally in Washington, D.C., his bestselling book, his creation of the now-accepted word truthiness, and of course his popular TV show, nearly everyone (except the poor Congressional fools who agree to be interviewed on his show) has heard of him. Yet all these things are part of a character also named Stephen Colbert. Who is he really? In And Nothing But the Truthiness, biographer Lisa Rogak examines the man behind the character. She reveals the roots of his humor, growing up as the youngest of eleven siblings, and the tragedy that forever altered the family. She charts his early years earning his chops first as a serious acting student and later as a budding impov comic, especially his close connection with Amy Sedaris, which led to the cult TV show Strangers with Candy. And Rogak offers a look inside how The Daily Show works, and the exclusive bond that Colbert and Jon Stewart formed that would lead to Colbert's own rise to celebrity. A behind-the-scenes look into the world of one of the biggest comedians in America, And Nothing But the Truthiness is a terrific read for any resident of Colbert Nation.

Download or read book The Residues, Part Two written by Stephen Barber and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Beginning in 1993 with Artaud: Blows and Bombs, Stephen Barber has quietly, independently forged one of the most singular and enriching bodies of work in contemporary writing." -David Peace Over the three decades since 1990, Stephen Barber has written many essays and experimental writings around film and digital arts. For the first time, this collection in two parts assembles all of those writings, many otherwise unavailable, over seventy in all. Many of those writings explore unknown elements of vital bodies of work that remain inspirational for contemporary art, writing and film. Others interrogate the transmutations of cities - especially those of Europe and of Japan - across those three decades, anatomizing their urban futures. These writings are often residues from, or accompaniments to, Stephen Barber’s thirty books, short writings which possess their own distinctive and accumulating presence, and can display the interrogative resilience to explore preoccupations with greater intensity and pointedness than an entire book. THE RESIDUES, PART TWO collects 30 writings on subjects including JG Ballard, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Donald Richie, and much more.

Download or read book Last Dance at the Wrecker's Ball written by Robert Douglas and published by Headline. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glasgow, 1971. The old way of life is under threat for the tight-knit community in Dalbeattie Street, Maryhill. The shadow of the wrecker's ball looms large over their homes, and they must face the choice of moving to a new estate or dispersing throughout the city. But powerful friendships refuse to be broken. These characters have gone through too much together to be destroyed by some measly planning scheme. They'll face this with the same inimitable Scottish humour and strength of spirit that have carried them through other tough times. Douglas' vivid portrait of Seventies Glasgow recreates, in glorious detail, a particular time and place, but at its heart are the universal themes of love, friendship and community.
Book Synopsis From Boys to Men by : Innocent B Hondo Chirawu
Download or read book From Boys to Men written by Innocent B Hondo Chirawu and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Boys to Men Part One & Part Two is basically an account of some of the experiences which were encountered by the author mainly from the time he was aged twelve right up to his adulthood. There is a deliberate effort by the author, to shade a picture of a metarmorphosis or transformation of his life as part and parcel of his journey from childhood to adulthood, hence, the catch title 'From Boys to Men'. Besides talking about his village life as a Nyachuru primary school going lad until that was shaken by the then Rhodesian 'protected village/Kipi curfew life', the author talked at great length about his life as a Howard secondary school boarder. Unlike Part Two whereby the author, quoting a lot of Bible verses is basically attempts to directly inspire, motivate, teach and share what he views as stubborn faith as well as consencration in the 'Born Again' believer' journey to Heaven, in Part One he uses a different approach. The approach in Part One, although it sounds dominantly autobigraphical, the author, once in blue moon though, also utilised his creative and imaginary writing skills for the sake of emphasis or clarity of the picture of both the actual and possible phenomena in his past, be it dialogues, conversations or whatever incidents. Obviously , a detailed or graphic memories some of the conversations and some of the incidents which transpired during those past decades at times may not have been as fresh as the time they took place. The author tried his best to remember all that he could remember to make his account not only a complete story but also an interesting story to read. At the end of both Part One and Two of the book, the author provides an opportunity for the reader to, just as he himself did at the age of ninteeen, consider placing their faith in Jesus Christ and accept Him as their personal Lord and Saviour too.
