Book excerpt: A common problem in the aluminium foundry is inclusions. Inclusions are particles in the melt that in the casting may have serious detrimental effects on machinability and physical properties. The most effective, known methods to separate inclusions from melt is to send the melt through a mechanical filter prior to casting. A number of different kinds of mechanical filters exist. They can roughly be divided into "cake"-filters and deep-bed filters. cake filters capture the inclusion by forming a cake of inclusions in front of the filter. Deep-bed filters antrap the inclusions down into the filter thereby attained a higher capacity (lower pressure drop). Deep-bed filters have been studied here. The filtration efficiency of a filter is deduced from first principles. An equation is proposed that takes 3-dimensional effects into account. A basic assumtion is that the filter can be described in terms of e unit collector. For this collector the collection efficiency is calculated. The collection efficiency is the product of the collision efficiency and adhesion efficiency. The collection efficiency is related to the filtration efficiency through an equation involving geometrical quantities (volume of filter, specific surface, porosity, etc.) and flow velocities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several refractory and metallic media were tested for effectiveness in removing aluminum oxide from molten aluminum casting alloys. A technique was used by which a metal sample could be melted, filtered, and cast entirely in a nitrogen atmosphere. Eleven filter materials in granular form were evaluated for two commercial alloys, 195 and 356. The aluminum oxide content of each alloy was determined before and after filtering by chemical analysis, using a procedure previously developed. Single filter packs of carborundum, porous graphite, or nonporous graphite decreased the oxide content of 195 alloy; magnesite, alundum, mullite, or porous graphite were most effective for alloy 356. Book excerpt: Separation processes—or processes that use physical, chemical, or electrical forces to isolate or concentrate selected constituents of a mixture—are essential to the chemical, petroleum refining, and materials processing industries. In this volume, an expert panel reviews the separation process needs of seven industries and identifies technologies that hold promise for meeting these needs, as well as key technologies that could enable separations. In addition, the book recommends criteria for the selection of separations research projects for the Department of Energy's Office of Industrial Technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to bring together current scientific understanding of wetting behaviour that has been gained from theoretical models and quantitative experimental observations. The materials considered are liquid metals or inorganic glasses in contact with solid metals or ceramics at temperatures of 200-2000oC. Wetting has been a significant scientific concern for the last two centuries and reference will be made to classical work by nineteenth century scientists such as Dupré, Laplace and Young that was validated by observations of the behaviour of chemically inert ambient temperature systems. In attempting to achieve the aims of the book, the text has been divided into ten Chapters that can be grouped into four stages of presentation. The first stage comprises two Chapters that review established and newly developed models for their relevance to wetting behaviour at high temperatures, including recent models that encompass the role of chemical reactions at the solid/liquid interfaces. Attention is paid both to equilibrium wetting behaviour (Chapter 1) and to the factors that control the approach to equilibrium (Chapter 2). Then follow Chapters concerned with experimental techniques for scientific measurement of the extent of wetting (Chapter 3) and with the surface energy data for both metals and non-metals that are essential for quantitative interpretation of wetting behaviour (Chapter 4). Descriptions of experimentally determined and quantified wetting behaviour are presented and interpreted in the third part comprising five Chapters dealing with the characteristics of metal/metal, metal/oxide, metal/non-oxide, metal/carbon and molten glass/solid systems. The book concludes with a Chapter commenting on the role of wetting behaviour in joining similar and dissimilar materials by liquid route techniques.
