Download or read book Beauty Up written by Laura Miller and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2006-07-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging introduction to Japan's burgeoning beauty culture investigates a wide range of phenomenon—aesthetic salons, dieting products, male beauty activities, and beauty language—to find out why Japanese women and men are paying so much attention to their bodies. Laura Miller uses social science and popular culture sources to connect breast enhancements, eyelid surgery, body hair removal, nipple bleaching, and other beauty work to larger issues of gender ideology, the culturally-constructed nature of beauty ideals, and the globalization of beauty technologies and standards. Her sophisticated treatment of this timely topic suggests that new body aesthetics are not forms of "deracializiation" but rather innovative experimentation with identity management. While recognizing that these beauty activities are potentially a form of resistance, Miller also considers the commodification of beauty, exploring how new ideals and technologies are tying consumers even more firmly to an ever-expanding beauty industry. By considering beauty in a Japanese context, Miller challenges widespread assumptions about the universality and naturalness of beauty standards.

Book Synopsis If We Had a Lemon We'd Throw It and Call That the Sun by : Christopher Citro
Download or read book If We Had a Lemon We'd Throw It and Call That the Sun written by Christopher Citro and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. IF WE HAD A LEMON WE'D THROW IT AND CALL THAT THE SUN by Christopher Citro was chosen by Ariana-Sophia Kartsonis as the winner of the 2019 Elixir Press Antivenom Poetry Award. Lee Upton had this to say about it: "In Christopher Citro's IF WE HAD A LEMON WE'D THROW IT AND CALL THAT THE SUN, the kinetic, continually surprising lines of poems contend with the largest questions. The poem title 'An Emergency Every Day of the Week' suggests the sense of threat that veers through these poems in the midst of their bracing comic energy. For Citro, so much depends on the angle at which we view our experiences. Musing on our daily disarrangements and the ways we attempt to lower the temperature on our worry barometers, he makes wildly inventive, exciting, vital poems, working sideways to reveal what we really ought to see at last."

Book Synopsis Akan-Ashanti Folktales by : R. S Rattray
Download or read book Akan-Ashanti Folktales written by R. S Rattray and published by Prince Sarfo-Adu. This book was released on 2023-08-23 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of 75 Ashanti tales recorded in the Ashanti and Kwawu areas of Ghana. Each folktale in Twi/Akan dialect of the Tshi language, is followed by an English translation. The English translation is, throughout, made as nearly literal as possible.(At this point, one meets a certain difficulty in a conflict between a desire for accuracy and an endeavour to give a translation acceptable to English ears). First published in 1930 by R.S. Rattray, this edition features a modern Akan/Twi orthography with a brief introduction to the Language. Ashanti folktales often tell a moral lesson, describe a myth, or answer a question about the natural world. Most of the Ashanti tales use animal characters to represent human qualities such as jealousy, honesty, greed, and bravery. Ananse, the spider, is a trickster figure who appears in many of the Ashanti tales. With regard to the classification of these stories, it will be observed that the majority of them fall under one or other of the well-known headings: drolls and cumulative tales; apologues or tales with a moral; aetiological stories, accounting for physical characteristics in men and beasts, e.g. How the Leopard became Spotted; etymological tales, e.g. "How the Ram came to be called Odwanini". Each and all of the stories in this volume would, however, be classed by the Akan-speaking African under the generic title of “Anansesɛm” (Spider stories), whether the spider appeared in the tale or not.
