Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis History of Semiotics by : Achim Eschbach
Download or read book History of Semiotics written by Achim Eschbach and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1983-01-01 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a collection of papers on the general theoretical and methodological problems in the historiography of semiotics. It is not a history in the conventional sense, even though the main periods and figures in the development of semiotics are given due prominence. Nevertheless, it should offer the reader stimulation and food for thought in the critical approach to even the least questioned facts of semiotic history and the emphasis given to hitherto neglected problems and persons.
Book Synopsis Reading Roman Declamation by : Martin T. Dinter
Download or read book Reading Roman Declamation written by Martin T. Dinter and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-11-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a genre situated at the crossroad of rhetoric and fiction, declamatio offers the freedom to experiment with new forms of discourse. Placing the literariness of declamatio into the spotlight, this volume showcases declamation as a realm of genuine literary creation with its own theoretical underpinning, literary technique and generic conventions. Focusing on the oeuvre of (Ps)Quintilian, this volume demonstrates that these texts constitute a genre on their own, the rhetorical and literary framework of which remains not yet fully mapped. It is of interest to students and scholars of Rhetoric and Roman Literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Knowing and History by : Michael S. Roth
Download or read book Knowing and History written by Michael S. Roth and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Knowing and History" charts the development of Hegelian philosophy of history in France from the 1930s through the postwar period, and critically assesses its significance for an understanding of our cultural present and of the possibilities for making meaning out of change over time. Michael Roth provides detailed analyses of the works of three of the most important Hegelian thinkers: Jean Hyppolite, Alexandre Kojève, and Eric Weil. These philosophers turned to history as the source of truths and criteria of judgment: they forged connections between history and knowing as a means of confronting key modem philosophical problems, and of engaging their contemporary political concerns. According to Roth, the French Hegelians' work illuminates the power and limitations of the philosophical approach to history. Further, he finds in the development of their philosophies one of the crucial transformations in modem intellectual history: the shift from a concern with questions of significance to a concern with questions of use or function. Relevant to a wide variety of disciplines, "Knowing and History" will appeal to those specializing in intellectual history and political theory, as well as philosophers of history, critical theorists, and students of modem French thought and culture.

Download or read book Figural Philology written by Adi Efal and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though inspired by a Panofskyan legacy, this book diverges at certain points from Erwin Panofsky's declared objectives, and calls attention to several of aspects that were until now less accentuated in his intellectual reception. Insisting on the importance of iconology as a method for art history and the humanities in general, it shows how examining this promotes a cooperation between the history of art and the history of philosophy. It discusses whether Panofsky's method could be of use for general questions in the epistemology of the historical sciences that examine human works. Figural Philology also shows that Panofsky shares affinities with twentieth-century romance philology. A reading of Panofsky's work alongside the philological enterprise of Erich Auerbach and several other authors demonstrates that a proper appropriation of the philological impulse can provide a way out of the methodological antimony still hanging between hyper-formalist and hyper-theoretical approaches to the history of art.
